I wasn’t overly excited to see the new construction on Hurstmere road was to be yet another Thai restaurant. Really, we need another one in the area? Despite this we went along to give it a chance. The dining area is large(and somewhat of a Tardis). There are plenty of seats and the ceiling is high, making it feel even bigger. The service was great. Our waitress was lovely and efficient. Her English was a little hard to understand, but at a Thai restaurant I think this only adds to the authenticity(who knows, perhaps she was putting it on). The food came out after a decent wait(no reheating out the back I presume) and it was fresh and tasty. There was nothing too remarkable about our meal, it was standard Thai food. It had great flavour, was hot and the portions were ample.

My girlfriend and I went out for dinner with some friends last night, and having never heard of Thai Takapuna before(It’s relatively new apparently), I was looking forward to seeing what kind of food they’d have for us, apart from the same old Pad Thai with chicken that is the standard staple of Thai Restaurants. The small storefront actually doesn’t show off the size of the restaurant, as it goes way back into the building, meaning that you can have decent sized group there and it doesn’t feel cramped or anything. But we’re here for the food, and I’m very glad to say it didn’t disappoint! I had chicken satay for entrée and beef noodle soup, which was delicious, while my girlfriend had a mixed starter and Panang Curry, which she says was really yum! The only downside was her entrée didn’t actually arrive, and a waitress came out to ask if we wanted them both together or just to skip the entrée, which we did. It was a pity, as we were starving and the extra wait was torture, but the mains certainly made up for it. All in all an affordable, easy, and pleasant feed, we’ll definitely be back again, just hope the entrees all make it next time!

This place is relatively new to Hurstmere Road, and fits right in with the improvements being made to the area. There is a big emphasis on quality stores and restaurants and this is exactly that. I had been told about Thai Takapuna for quite awhile before I made it there, and the night we ended up going was a last minute decision. A decision I was glad we’d made. It was casual and welcoming, and the staff were just the same. The décor was great in that kind of weird, tacky, funny but authentic Thai way. The meals are really well priced and we ended up getting a bunch of dishes to share. All were flavourful and rich with great spices. Being BYO and in the middle of Taka, it’s a good option to start the night off and head out. The only thing I would complain about was that there was a tv screen showing a medical program(!!!) Not something you want to watch while eating.
