This place is literally a hole in the wall, it’s a tiny window just besides Tony’s on Lorne street. I have tried their ham and cheese sandwich(made with a baguette but I still call that a sandwich) and their croissants, and they were both really good. Make sure you don’t have a tooth ache or anything before ordering those baguettes, they have a proper crust and each bite requires more chewing than the more common soft rolls. Worth nothing they also sell French jams and spreads(Bonne Maman brand) if any expat Frenchy happens to have a craving!

Oh my gosh, there’s a new barista at La Boulange and she’s a gem! She says the espresso machine has just had a tune up(or whatever it is they do to espresso machines)…but I reckon she’s got pure caffeine magic in her hands! You won’t find better coffee in Auckland, or friendlier service!

La Boulange makes a fantastic filled baguette. It’s just like you would get in France — fresh crusty bread with ham and cheese. There are others, but that ham and cheese is my favourite. You’ll pay a lot more than you would in France but oh well, what can you do? The pastries are good if you’re into that kind of thing — especially the pain au chocolat. This is basically a hole in the wall shop, so good for a takeaway lunch and coffee(Supreme) or morning tea snack. They also sell a few deli items if you’re the romantic type and want to create a little picnic for someone special.

La Boulange is a little hole-in-the-wall coffee house cum bakery. Everything is baked fresh on site in a tiny oven, and you can purchase filled baguettes and croissants as well as a host of delicious French grocery items — cheese, olives, cured meats, foie gras and terrines are all on offer and make for perfect picnic ingredients or accompaniment to a wine in the sun at home. The consistency of the coffee, I have found, depends on the person behind the coffee machine — if they can train up some of their staff to heat the milk for a little longer the coffee will be on par with some of the best Auckland cafes.
