It seems like this kind of shop is becoming increasingly prevalent. The formula is fairly simple. Name yourself something which vaguely infers post 1960’s Americana or at least invokes the Grateful Dead in some way. Then sell the shit out of some old t shirts and cowboy boots and denim shirts and jackets with and without sleeves and prairie shirts in a variety of colours and styles. Basically you want your customers to come in an be able to effectively assemble an outfit straight outta Paris, Texas. Seems fine. But there’s a pretty uncomfortable discourse there which basically boils down to the fact that all that counter culture Americana stuff was cheap and dirty and all about pushing up from the bottom. Which, to me, clashes with the concept of selling an old t shirt for $ 50. Sell the t-shirt by all means, but don’t sell them for such obnoxious prices lest they become just another boring and cynical status symbol.
