We had granola with vanilla yoghurt, sandwich. Kids had scramble eggs and hot cakes. All the meals are divine. The granola is simply the best. We will definitely come back.

Having been here once and not being overly impressed I thought I would give it another go. What a mistake, it was worse that the first time. I honestly cannot understand how this place survives. The coffee was burnt the food portions weren’t overly generous and of average to below average quality and well and truly overpriced, I mean $ 9.50 for a corned beef sandwich? Quite frankly you’d be better served going to Denny’s. Sorry Buttermilk. I tried to like you but I won’t be back.

Buttermilk is successful Auckland restauranteurs Warwick Browns newest baby. It opened in November to much acclaim but I haven’t really heard that much hype about it since. I guess that could be because its tucked away at Victoria Park Markets which alot of Aucklander’s don’t really frequent all that much, maybe because the refurbishment is still technically under construction or something. The new addition of this café has provided a good reason to come over this way now though. I was just in for a quick in and out lunch with a friend of mine on the afternoon of my visit. I had the mango and coconut smoothie which was pretty yummy combined with a vegetable pide sandwhich which had some of my favourite fillings, so I was kept happy. The guy at the till was very friendly and I could see Warwick away in the back of the kitchen doing his thing. My only disappointment is the lack of wow factor that this café has. I thought because it had such a big name at its helm that it might be a little more standout. The food in the cabinet looks great, but not all that inspired. Just not what I was expecting as such.

This café is a new addition to the Vicky Park Market shops. My boyfriend and I visited for lunch one day and the service we received deserves the first mention. We were happily greeted on entrance, seated and given menu’s, chatted too for a while about our day and just generally doted on throughout our meal, it was excellent service. Secondly the food, we ordered a sandwich to share as we weren’t that hungry but I think after eating it we had both wished we got one each, it was really delicious. We asked our waitress a bit about the place and she said that the food they serve is the creation of Warwick Brown, a well respected chef in NZ. The place is lovely to sit in, really open with a high ceiling so there is no cramped feeling. I will definitely be returning to buttermilk, maybe to try their extensive breakfast menu this time.

I came here with a couple of friends in the first week of Buttermilk opening in the newly refurbished Victoria Park Market. Buttermilk occupies a large open and light space, in particular I liked the large communal table at the end of the café by the doors but since it was a nice day we sat outside. The staff here are really friendly and the food menu is largely a breakfast or brunch one. I had the fresh fruit with toasted almonds minus the yoghurt and it was lovely. A friend of mine had the smoked salmon bagel which in all honesty even being vegan, I have to say looked really good. I asked, she said it was. I was also told the smoothie was too. The coffee was good but not great, maybe its the beans but it didn’t have the wham! that was a great espresso effect. Down this end of the city there tends to be a bit more night life than brunching options so this makes a welcome addition. For me personally I would rather walk the extra distance to Queenies Lunchroom on Spring Street but Buttermilk is better than anything else down in Victoria Park Market.
