Under9

Known as the alternative space, for alternative music, arts, and all things that is out of the ordinary, I myself never knew the existence of this place till I was personally invited by a friend for the amazing staRro, a dj from Japan whom was making his 2015 Asia Tour. Listening to him for the first time ever, I was completely taken by surprise and I immediately wished that I could be dancing to his music all the time instead of the things that is played in the club these days. I found new love and finally I just felt right.
This space is directly under Cafe9, which operates during regular café hours and is own by the same person. Coming here for the first time, I admit that I did feel a little spooked out because I’ve never attended anything in a basement before. You’d need to go inside a building and pass by the security guard whom will show you the door. Going down the steps, there were people hanging and sitting by the steps and I later realize it’s because smoking is not allowed inside which is great, no smokey hair the next day.
Inside, everything is bare and minimal, where you grasp the fact that people come here solely for the genuine love and appreciation for music and nothing else. People weren’t dressed in heels and short dresses like your usual clubs, but in comfortable clothing and in sneakers and some even flip flops.
Acts here are anything but commercial and dull, stay away if you are not a lover of things that are soulful or unusual.

When it comes to clubbing or more specifically, the music you tend to get when out clubbing, I can in all honesty admit that I am not the biggest fan of the commercially accessible crap that we tend to endure in most nightspots. Call me a stick in the mud but I can only attempt to impress people with my poorly cultivated Gangnam Style dance moves one too many times. So if you, like me have an appreciation for diverse albeit slightly obscure music, then Under9 is the place for you. From deep house music to psytrance to dark ambient tunes, Under9 is a minimalist venue located in the hearth of KL and night after night, it draws in groups of underground music junkies who come simply for the sake of killer, thoughtfully curated music and great company. Drinks could stand to be a little cheaper but overall, you’re paying for quality as these guys are quite stringent when it comes to what they serve. (No cap lalang here).
