Don’t be scared by the reviewers saying the customer service is terrible; it’s not. The Peterson pipes are beautifully made and deliver a wonderfully smooth smoke. The workers are nice, so long as you make sure to ask. Unlike some places they don’t try to sell you things, they answer questions and
Give advice. After merely three minutes of interaction I knew everything I needed to about the pipes I was interested, and had a list of the best pubs in Dublin. You just can’t be afraid to ask questions.
The Tobacco selection is fun, and though pipes are their main business they carry an assortment of other things like lighters, knives, cigarettes and cigars. The price range is large and the workmanship and quality of everything is top notch.

Good selection, but the staff aren’t really interested in working there. I don’t know why they don’t leave, let the company get people who are interested in what they’re selling. You feel often like the staff are getting pissed off with you asking them questions. Fox is a far nicer experience, the staff know what they’re selling.
There is one nice chap, bald with glasses, over 40.

Goes to show that it depends who’s working: I came into the shop, one guy was working, he never acknowledged my presence nor tore himself away from whatever it was he was so busy with. I noticed the sign for «Cuban Cigars» being downstairs, so I went down there. Naturally, the door to the humidor was locked.
I came upstairs and, again, the busy man didn’t look up. I’ll spend my money somewhere else.
Hey, Peterson’s, do you employ people just to give them something to do or do you have hopes of making some money? I own three of your pipes, but will never buy another.

Another reviewer said this is just a pipe shop for tourists and I have to agree. The guys who work here give me the impression that they would rather be somewhere else. They’re not pipe smokers. I think they have very little interest in the product they sell.
One week I came in to check out the «Aran» pipes and I was told, «We don’t sell that here, it’s Internet Only.» The next week I come in and Aran pipes are taking up 5 feet of wall display. «Of course we have those, it’s one of our biggest sellers.»
Another time I was looking at Churchwardens and the sales-​associate told me, «Better get one of those green ones, they are being discontinued.» When I came back a month later, all they had were green Churchwardens. It turns out the red ones are no longer made. Either he was just trying to pitch me a sale or he just didn’t know what he was talking about.
Most Disappointing: Peterson does not sell loose tobacco! Yet they have jars of pipe tobacco on a table by the front door? When you ask to buy a quantity of loose tobacco, you are told, «We don’t sell loose tobacco, only tins. Those jars are just for customers to smell.»
Seriously? A pipe shop with all that space, in the middle of high-​rent district (Grafton Street & Nassau St.) doesn’t sell loose tobacco?
I just keep getting a negative vibe from Peterson. Save yourself some grief and go to James Fox. They understand customer service at James Fox and act like they’re happy to see customers.

Wir waren auf dem Weg vom Trinity College zum National Museum,
als wir an dem Ladengeschäft von Peterson vorbeikamen. Als
leidenschaftlicher Pfeifenraucher blieb ich verzückt stehen und
betrachtete die Schaufensterauslagen. Nun half alles Drängen meiner
zwei Reisebegleiter nicht mehr. An diesem Fachgeschäft konnte ich
einfach nicht vorbeigehen, ohne auch das Innere des Ladens genau
unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
Meine Begeisterung schlug hohe Wellen. Ein großes Geschäft nur mit
Pfeifen und Pfeifentabak des irischen Herstellers Peterson. Eine sich
über die ganze Wand erstreckende Vitrine, nur mit Peterson-​Pfeifen gefüllt.
Die beiden Mitarbeiter fragten nur kurz nach meinen Wünschen. Ich
antwortete, ich wolle nur mal die Pfeifen anschauen und würde mich
bei Bedarf melden. Die beiden Herren ließen mir alle Zeit der Welt
und hätten mich sehr wahrscheinlich bis zur Schließung des Ladens
nicht gedrängt. Und obwohl ich schon vier Pfeifen von Peterson
mein Eigen nennen kann, entschloß ich mich, hier noch eine zu
kaufen. Eine schöné Bent, mit rotbraunem Kopf und schwarzem
Fishtail-​Mundstück. Aus einer Sonderauflage zum St. Patrick’s Day 2012.
Anschließend schaute ich mir die Auslagen an Tabak an. Und weil man
in Deutschland nicht überall –manchmal sogar nur relativ schwer–
verschiedene Tabakmischungen von Peterson bekommt, kaufte ich auch
noch zwei Dosen Pfeifentabak.
Aber nicht nur Pfeifen und Tabak kann man in diesem Geschäft kaufen.
Alles, was es an Zubehör für Pfeifenraucher so gibt, kann hier erstanden
werden. Also legte ich mir auch noch ein schönes, braungemasertes
Pfeifenfeuerzeug mit dem aufgeprägtem, geschwungenen «P», dem
Emblem von Peterson zu.
Die Qualität der hier angebotenen Produkte ist über jeden Zweifel
erhaben. Die Preise liegen zwar über dem deutschen Durchschnitt,
sind aber akzeptabel. Was mich vollends überzeugte, war das sehr
gepflegte Ambiente des Geschäfts, dessen charmante Atmosphäre,
und die sehr freundliche aber unaufdringliche Art der Mitarbeiter.
Darum, mit allem Recht der Welt: verdiente fünf Sterne.

I’ve been a pipe smoker for about 7 years now. I had a few shops back in Minnesota that were my favorite. Peterson is a decent shop but there are a few major differences.
First off, in Minnesota there is a indoor smoking ban but fortunately there is a loophole for tobacco shops. It’s called a «sampling clause» and simply means if a customer is solely sampling the stores products and not just smoking anything, it’s okay to smoke inside. My favorite shop in Minneapolis had a lounge in the back for customers «sampling» their products. I can’t fault Peterson for not having this because it’s not possible for them because of the Irish law but nevertheless, it’s disappointing. If anyone knows a place where it’s legal to smoke indoors, please let me know.
A positive for Peterson is that fact that they make great pipes. I have two currently. One was a wedding gift from my best man a few years ago and the other a birthday present a month ago from my dear wife. They both have a very clean smoke and are easy to maintain. Peterson’s pipe designs are classic and unique and always look good.
Peterson makes a few decent blends that they sell in tins in the store, but that’s really it. I’m used to walking in a tobacco shop and having a counter with maybe 20 – 30 jars of hand blended tobacco that you buy by the ounce and a shelf with a variety of tins. Peterson limits themselves by only selling the 5 or 6 varieties of tins that they have.
Overall, Peterson seems like a tourist stop for pipe smokers. The fact that I had a Peterson pipe before I moved to Dublin and then got a new one from the store on Grafton St. was cool, but as a regular smoker who isn’t gonna buy a new pipe very often, I just want a shop with more variety of tobacco blends.

My husband has a small collection of pipes, and when he recently received tenure we decided to celebration with a new addition! And THIS is the place to go! Peterson’s pipes have a world wide reputation for being beautiful and their innovative «pipe systems.»
We spent half our afternoon in the shop narrowing down our choices. There are literally walls of pipes to look through. After some hard decisions, we left the shop very happily with a beautiful green pipe and some Irish Oak tobacco. Quite appropriate for being in Ireland don’t you think?

‘The thinking man smokes a Peterson’ goes the tagline. Sophistication and ardor certainly go hand in hand in this renowned tobacconist and pipe makers located directly opposite Trinity College right in the centre of Dublin. This really is the zenith of refinement with leather Chesterfield wing back chairs, a whole assortment of pipes, hip flasks, a mahogany-​paneled room, swiss army knives, a plethora of tobacco, Zippo lighters that you can have engraved alongside cases upon cases of handmade cigars. I can imagine sitting back and enjoying all of these luxuries with a single malt whiskey in one hand, pipe in the other in front of a roaring fire. I bought a Zippo from here and felt confident that perpetual quality along with superior craftsmanship was certain. The staff within Peterson’s are pristinely presented and are frequently provided with the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency and know-​how on the topic of tobacco and pipes to the probing customers. This is always done on their part with a surplus of professionalism and the utmost politeness. They really are immaculately turned out and their knowledge is far and beyond anyone else’s I have ever come across. A friend of mine said that what these guys don’t know about tobacco is not worth knowing, and they’re right. Always ready and willing to help with their wealth of expertise at the ready to be retrieved at any time, this kind of civility really enhances your shopping experience. Peterson’s is very expensive — the old saying ‘You get what you pay for’ is certainly pertinent in this case however, not that I would ever downplay their quality but just be ready to part with a lot of money if you wish to invest in one of the charming things on sale.
Note: ‘Limited Edition 2009′ tobacco can be bought from now until Christmas, Peterson’s first ever Winter tobacco with an extraordinary scent and flavour that sees red and golden Virginias merge with two types of black Cavendish. I would highly recommend this handsome mixture of baked apples and bourbon vanilla. Sumptuous in a Fermoy pipe.

To say I like smoking is kind of like saying fish kind of like water. I am a brazen, unashamed, totally without regret or guilt smoker. I smoke cigarettes regularly, cigars often and my pipes occasionally.
It is almost like a religion and like all true devotees it is necessary to make a pilgrimage from time to time to freshen the spirit and renew ones faith in that which occupies so much ones time. There are a few tobacconists in Dublin but none come close to Peatersons for selection of all the really nice things I like to spend ages looking at — rows of pipes, cases of cigars, jars of tobacco, cigarettes and a small selection of lighters and boys toys.
Far be it for me to encourage the clean-​lunged among you to take up the smouldering weed but for those of you who have already fallen then this is a shop you absolutely must put on your to-​do list, try a dark tobacco for a change… it’s like smoking 3 regular cigarette at once, tremendous,

I call this a ‘dad’ shop! Stuck for a birthday or Father’s Day present? Then step right this way! Peterson has been established since 1865 and stepping in to the shop, feels like to me, stepping back in time and reminds me of my pipe smoking granddad!
It sells lots of man stuff like pipes, Swiss army knives, hip flasks, torches, Zippo lighters etc But all over very high quality and design!
They have a lovely selection of pipes, tabacco and cigars.

This slightly tweedy shop is the retail outlet for Peterson pipe makers of Sallynoggin, Co. Dublin. It’s an amazing place that sells all sorts of good manly devices — from custom pipes to tobacco blends, hip flasks, and a whole range of knives, tools and lights. I come here for the cigars — a great range that are kept behind humidity controlled glass doors at the rear of the store. They have everything from machine rolled cheapies to big fat Cubans and some really interesting dark stuff from further south. Just going in and buying a cigar here is an event! The service is wonderful — what these chaps don’t know about tobacco and related paraphernalia isn’t worth knowing. The prices, of course, can get somewhat insane. You may have to mortgage the country house or do away with the butler’s butler, but well worth a visit nonetheless.
