National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces

One of the many monuments of Merrion Square. This particular monument honors the Irish Defence Forces along with an eternal flame guarded by statues within the pyramid.
This is nicely lit up at night and a great focal point along the perimeter of the park. Merrion Square is filled with statues and monuments and this is one of the more visible obvious ones near the eastern side of the park.
Definitely worth seeing if you are in the area. This park particularly looks amazing when the lush green trees fill in during the summer and the flower beds are fully planted in the center of the park.

This striking memorial is to be found at one of the entrances to Merrion Square Park. It is designed by the artist Brian King. It is a combination of granite and glass. The Pyramid shape with all its historic references to burial and standing testament to the dead. It is also described as reflecting an army tent. It is in memory of all the people in the defense forces that lost their lives for the State.
In the tent structure members of the Defence Forces are ever present. 4 Defence Force personnel cast in bronze, representing the Air Corps, Army, and Naval Service. They are guarding an eternal flame that emanates from the Defence Forces Badge.
It is something that most be seen and explored as there is so much going on inside and out. Also a nice place to eat your sandwich as I tend to do.
