Oscar Wilde Statue

Il avait une sacrée classe l’Oscar tout de même, ce dandy qui a mal fini sa vie à cause de la connerie de la société quant à sa différence (homosexualité, non conformisme, affranchissement des diktats par définition étriqués). Sa citation la plus célèbre: «Le seul moyen de se délivrer de la tentation est d’y céder «me parle comme jamais et pas à cause de «L’île de la Tentation» (né cherchez pas dans sa bio, c’est bien de l’émission libidineuse dont je fais état); quant à la statue en elle même, bien raccord avec la nature environnante du point de vue des couleurs, cela change des autres sculptures de part le monde.

I love Oscar Wilde — one of our dogs is named in his honor, and I made a special point of visiting his grave when we were in Paris a few years back. However, even though I knew this statue was in Merrion Square, and even though I have been to Dublin many times at this point, I had never seen it. On our most recent trip, though, we stayed right around the corner from the statue (and also Oscar Wilde’s childhood home), so there was absolutely no chance that I would miss out on finally paying Oscar a visit!
The statue is gorgeous, and easily seen from the street, but it’s definitely worth walking into the park for a close up view of Oscar in his full-​color, reclining, smirky glory. Even on what was a cold, wet, and windy afternoon there were plenty of tourists waiting around to capture their perfect selfie with the man, so it took a few minutes for us to get our turn, but that wasn’t a problem, as it just gave us more time to admire him. You don’t see many statues like this that are in full color, and it’s pretty cool. I read online that it’s made of granite, jade, white jadeite, and thulite, and it really is the perfect compliment for someone who was such a colorful personality. In front of the rock where Oscar is reclining are two pillars, each topped with a small nude sculpture and covered in Wilde’s quotes, also in color.
I’m so glad I finally got to visit this statue — it is definitely worth a visit. From here on out, whenever I’m in Dublin, I will be sure to pass by and give Oscar a wave.

Oscar Wilde wurde 1854 als zweiter Sohn des führenden
irischen Augen– und Ohrenarztes Wiliam Wilde geboren.
Er durchlief die klassische Ausbildung seiner Zeit, wie sie in
den Gesellschaftskreisen seiner Eltern üblich waren, an
einer Internatsschule, der Portora Royal School in Enniskillen.
Von1871 bis 1874 studierte er klassische Literatur am Trinity
College Dublin. Als Schriftsteller wurde Wilde zu seiner Zeit
sehr bewundert. Gleichzeitig war er im prüden viktorianischen
England auch als Skandalautor und Dandy verschrien.
Seine Märchensammlung, «Der glückliche Prinz» und andere
Märchen sind von zeitloser Schönheit. Und seine satirische
Darstellung der englischen Oberklasse in seinen Werken
«An Ideal Husband“und «The Importance of Being Earnest»
könnte noch heute auf die englische Oberklasse zutreffen.
Für uns war es sozusagen eine Pflicht, während unseres
Aufenthaltes in Dublin das Denkmal Wildes zu besuchen.
Es steht ziemlich genau an der Ecke Merrion Square North
und Merrion Square West, in einem kleinen Park, schräg
gegenüber seinem Elternhaus. Er wird auf einem Felsen
liegend dargestellt. Das rechte Bein ausgestreckt, das linke
Bein angewinkelt. In einer malachitgrünen Jacke, mit rotem
Revers und roten Ärmelaufschlägen. Mit süffisant-​zynischen
Lächeln scheint er die Fingernägel seiner zur Faust geballten
Hand zu betrachten.
Dem Denkmal gegenüber befinden sich zwei Stelen mit den
bekanntesten Aphorismen und bonmots Oscar Wildes.
Das Denkmal scheint für Touristen nicht von Bedeutung zu
sein. Wir hielten uns längere Zeit dort auf. Nur zwei Studentinnen
aus Belfast suchten in dieser Zeit das Denkmal auf. Hier also
meine ausdrückliche Empfehlung. Wer Dublin besucht und etwas
für angloirische Literatur übrig hat, sollte sich das Oscar Wilde
Memorial ansehen.
Die Dubliner Lästerzungen bezeichnen das Denkmal, politisch
selbstverständlich nicht korrekt, als «the fag on the crag»,
als «der Schwule auf dem Felsen».

Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 — 1900) was an Irish writer and poet and is regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest literary figures. You can find Oscar Wilde’s statue in Merrion Square in Dublin, Ireland. The statue shows Oscar Wilde provocatively reclining on a large granite stone without a care in the world. The statue is positioned so that he is looking at his old family home number 1 Merrion Square, on the north side of Merrion Square.
Danny Osborne was commissioned to sculpt the Oscar Wilde Statue by the Guinness Ireland group. The process took over two years from start to finish. The sculptor used colored stones and stones with varying textures to give the statue a much more lifelike representation of Oscar Wilde. Green stone is used in Oscar’s jacket and red stones are used in the jacket’s lapels and cuffs. Two stone pillars stand nearby the sculpture which are covered in Oscar Wilde quotes:

TIP: If you are visiting the Oscar Wilde statue please note that Merrion Square Park closes at 9:30pm in summer and 4:30pm in winter.

We searched everywhere for this statue, because my daughter thought it was in St. Stephen Green. It is not. But, instead in Merrion Square.
Proving that we should all check out Unilocal first before we look for something. It would of would of been a lot of help.
When we did find it, I was amazed! So beautiful, you can see it from the street.
It is the most unusual statue I have ever seen.
It is colorful and perched up on a huge boulder.
The clothing they have him in looks so real. Especially the socks, they look silk!
Oscar looks up into his room of his childhood home. Which I have to say it is pretty darn COOL!
There are 2 rectangle statues standing up and theyare a beautiful color with wonderful writings all over them that are etched into the stone. They are many quotes from Oscar Wilde.
There are a lot of Statues to see in Dublin. But, if you can only see one, This would be it!

The Oscar Wilde statue sits at the corner of Merrion Square park directly facing his childhood home (now the American College of Ireland). This statue also sits directly across the path from a few other more abstract statues with some famous quotes from Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde poses on the rock facing out to the footpath and beyond to the passing traffic. You can usually see the crowd of tourists passing by and taking pictures and it is one of the drive by attractions of the hop on hop off bus.
I love Merrion Square park and I am very frequent visitor to the park and I would say I pass this statue quite often. It is well made and attracts quite a bit of attention as noted above. I usually tell my visiting friends to visit this statue when walking through the park.

A quirky smile over to the house he was born. Why?

Un poco decepcionante esta estatua y memorial para uno de los escritores más importantes de la cultura e historia irlandesa. Algo escondido dentro de Merrion Square, la escultura en sí es difícil de no debatir de su belleza y representatividad. Mejorable.

Después de leer muchas guias parece que es un lugar obligado pero decepciona un poco encontrarse con esta estatua raramente coloreada. Lo mejor es el parque donde se ubica.

Okay, so I can’t quite give this five stars because I don’t really remember if I ever physically visited this statue. Nonetheless, I’ve had a few good laughs at my friends’ and others’ pictures of it. I find Oscar Wilde’s pose on this statue to be very odd. You should check it out and have a good laugh.

Being a huge fan of Oscar Wilde, I absolutely adore this memorial statue, situated in the park near the home he was born in on Merrion Square. What I like about the statue is not only his quirky expression, but also that it’s in colour, he looks relaxed and charming. It’s a wonderful and beautiful park to browse around and certainly worth while for fellow Wilde fans; take a walk where Oscar surely spent a lot of his time as a child!

Das Oscar Wilde Memorial in Dublin hat mich ein wenig enttäuscht.
In einer Ecke eines Parks gelegen — versteckt und ohne Wegweiser haben wir es eher durch Zufall gefunden.
Oscar liegt — irgendwie arrogant lächelnd? — in Lebensgröße auf einem Felsen und blickt in die Ferne.
Vor ihm sind zwei Blöcke aufgestellt mit Zitaten von ihm und zwei Büsten.
Eine kleine Tafel mit seinem Namen ist auf dem Felsen befestigt.
Und das wars.
Ein bisschen wenig — aber wir hatten Oscar ganz für uns allein.

lo curioso de la estatua es que se encuentra mirando a su casa de nacimiento dicen que en ese parque iba a meditar y delante suya existe un monolito con diferentes frases.
Esta bien para los fans de Oscar Wilde y todo aquel que quiera aprender algo mas o tener un toque cultural en Dublin

The Oscar Wilde Memorial in Merrion Square is very true to the wit’s life. There her is posing langourously against a giant rock while just in front of him is a column with many of his most famous sayings on it. The man himself looks amused and this adds to the visit because you wonder, just why is he smiling?
