I was in Dublin on vacation from California and decided to buy an Irish Bodhran as a souvenir. The staff was helpful with my selection. This is the place to go to get one with nice wood and leather.

Goodwins are my go to for strings and all things musical. Staff are always helpful and know their stuff. They stock a wide range of guitars, boht budget and for the serious afficionado and I have bought my last 2 guitars(1 Martin &1 Takemine) there. They are happy to let you try out as many instruments as you like and I have never felt pressured into buying anything or hassled to stop playing and buy something or get out. If you like they will even let you play Stairway :-P Prices are good and even looking fo radvise on the small(cheap) things(I am going to learn the harmonica one of these days) they are helpful and are prepared to take their time with you.

As my only other review on this site, albeit filtered away for some reason, was a complaint about a music store, I ought to write about a positive experience. I bought a guitar in here a couple of years back, that I then traded back to them recently, and ordered a guitar off them that wasn’t currently in stock. They were upfront and helpful and managed to get the guitar that I wanted in quickly. As opposed to the other place, they were polite and a pleasure to deal with.

There’s a right way to run a small music shop, and there’s an overpriced and under stocked wrong way. The good news is, Goodwins gets it right. I can’t stress how important it is for a music shop selling any type of instruments to create a space were sound quality sells the stock for them. Goodwin’s beautifully stocked walls of Taylor, Martin and other accoustic treasures is double height to give these guitars room to sing. There is the smallest of sheet music racks with a scattering of bongos and tambourines, but really this shop is about the strings. And when I say the guys in here know their stuff, take it as rote. In fact, just assume that there’s lots of good to be had in a visit to Goodwins and get over there.

A rarity: a music shop on Dublin’s northside. Goodwin’s is an above-average music shop, mainly dealing in guitars. There’s a decent Fender presence, but Aria guitars are represented best here. Always an important factor, they seem to be less snobby about letting you try before you buy, and their window display is well up to scratch. Recommended.
