Was like an oasis in the desert, was dying for a steamed burger and just happened upon this place. Burgers were delicious

Nice people but I will not go back. They are attentive and seem like hard working I did not enjoy the food…

Located across the street from the Wallingford-soon-to-be original train station, American Steamed serves up the Meriden-area delicacy– the steamed cheeseburg with speed, accuracy and reasonable pricing. Next time your about to hit a fast food chain, try out a local Conn dish and support a local establishment with friendly owners– you’ll be glad you did.

Fantastic steamed cheeseburgers with real cheddar. Interior is a bit rough but don’t let that stop you. Good friendly service too.

Wasn’t sure what is was walking into when I entered the restaurant. It was more of a store about to close. There was no real kitchen to speak of just a counter with a steamer on it. The owner was very nice and chatty. I have a steamed burger before at Teds and by comparison Teds is much better. I would have preferred a better quality meat mix. The burger itself tasted like lower quality ground meat. I also saw people post fried onion rings which I didn’t see on the menu plus I didn’t see a frier to even make them.

Basically they do one thing perfectly: Steam. Controlled. Just right. The Philly cheese steak w onions on an ultra fresh grinder roll is the ULTIMATE. It’s a tiny place. Nothing fancy but he makes all his own sides & serves Boylan & local infamous Foxton sodas. This guy is the master of the steam universe. Support this local joint, you won’t regret it!

Drove 1.5 hours to use a Groupon we purchased, worth the ride! The burgers were juicy and tasty, will definitely stop again if we are in the area. Staff pleasant and attentive.

My BF and I used our Groupon to try this place a couple weeks ago. It’s a small hole in the wall joint with yummy stuff! Steamed cheeseburgers were moist and juicy. They have homemade macaroni salad that is KILLER!

First time in. Small hole in the wall place. But the Steamed cheese burgers were good. A must try for first timers if your in the neighborhood. I recommend it. Next time I’m in the area I’ll stop by.

Place is not too noticeable but don’t let it fool you. Loved this burger place. Classic toppings and delicious steamed burger. Not too thick and dry like I’ve experienced at other steamed burger joints. The owner was there with what looked like his son and they were overly friendly and courteous. I plan to go back again soon!

Best cheese sandwich I’ve ever had in my life, delivery is fast and friendly I just wish they’d open more stores.

Searched burger places near Sleeping Giant and this place popped up. The steamed cheeseburgers are as amazing as they sound. Really savory and filling. The sauce and the sweet raw onions are a fantastic combination with the meat in the soft buns. Also the homemade macaroni salad was really good. Olives were added to it and just made the flavor fabulous. Overall, fantastic place and I am definitely going back.

Visiting the area from New York and decided that I had to have a famous steamed CT cheeseburger. Came here based on the Unilocal reviews and wasn’t disappointed. It’s a tiny shop with one table and two chairs and one high chair… also 2 or 3 barstools at the counter. Burger was juicy and flavorful but the cheese really makes the burger… gooey and salty. A great topping to the burger. You get a choice of a plain or poppy seed bun(more like a roll that you get with an egg breakfast sandwich at the deli here). My only complaint is that the bun to burger ratio is off… the bun is too big for the size of the burger. Either more meat is needed or a smaller bun. Definitely get the onion rings. So good… fries were good but pretty run of the mill. But they were fried nicely and crispy.

We finally used our Groupon for here today and were pleasantly surprised! It’s a little hole in the wall kind of place that we drove by the first time. Not a ton of seating, but we didn’t mind at all as a lot of steamed burger places are grab and go. The guy working there was super nice, we noted him washing his hands and wiping down counters between orders(EXTREMELY appreciated). The fries were okay but I’m more of a rings girl and they were seriously some of the best I’ve had. The burger was great. Onions, tomato, lettuce and extra cheese is the way to go. We’ll absolutely be back, or ordering. Grubhub supported! They even have bendy straws. How can you not like a place with bendy straws?

Burg’r Tend’r makes a great steamed cheeseburger. When it comes to a steamed cheeseburger(one of my favorite foods in the world), I want quality ground beef steamed to juicy perfection, topped with melty, gooey steamed cheese, on a nice soft bun with fresh, quality toppings — and that’s what I got here. On top of that, I had the most pleasant experience ordering from and chatting with the friendly and helpful staff in this cute little one-counter, one-table place. I stopped in today with a Groupon that got me two steamed cheeseburgers, two orders of fries(I was able to substitute one order for onion rings), and two cans of soda. Everything was delicious. My burger was satisfying and put together very well(not too messy), and the fries and onion rings were both nice and crispy, even when I took the orders to go. Prices were reasonable all around, and the Groupon deals and coupons they have on their website and in various mailers are great deals. I’m not in this area very often, but when I am, I’ll gladly stop in again.

I have only been here once with my husband but we will totally be back! I ordered the steamed cheeseburger with onions and mayor and my husband insisted he ordered extra cheese because a lot of places are skimpy on the cheese, however Burg’r Tend’r is not skimpy! My burger had just enough cheese and he was shocked that he didn’t need to order extra, although who would complain with too much cheese? I always go back in forth about steamed burgers but this establishment convinced me to love them :) Keep up the good work!

I like new places and would rather support these types of places over chain restaurants. The services was great and the place, although small, was very clean. The staff behind the counter were pleasant and service was quick. I just ordered a cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup and mayo. I ordered it to go. The burger itself… the meat… was very good. No weird aftertaste. I felt I was eating quality meat. The bread was fresh… a choice between a regular or poppy seed roll. The veggies were fresh. The cheese was not what I was expecting. It was good… different…but didn’t satisfy my desire for a big juicy cheeseburger. When the order is placed to go, the burger is wrapped in foil. Unfortunately, the bottom bread was soggy from all the steam building up inside. It had only been wrapped for no more than 10 minutes. Given that this place is small and most orders will be to go, if the owner is reading this… consider a container/packaging that can let out some steam and reconsider adding a selection of cheese. Keep what you have as the«original» and offer other types(american, pepperjack, cheddar)

I was driving down rt 5 and really just wanted a cheeseburger and I was on my way to work in East Haven. I used to stop at Ted’s over in North Haven until they closed down that location. I caught a glimpse or Burg’r Tend’r and thought that was just too perfect of timing. I had no idea this place existed. Pulled a U-turn and went back. Went in for a quick burger before I had to get back on the road to work. The burger hit the spot. Nice guy working there, he was fast and efficient. This place is great don’t get me wrong. To say this is better than Ted’s might be a little far fetched and this is why… If this was better than Ted’s, you would be making your own french fries and not buying them frozen. Secondly, the cheese was a bit over powering from the meat and had a weird congealed texture. I love sharp cheddar, but I would combine it with a little milder, gooier cheese. The sharpness took away from the flavor of the great meat patty. That is my two cents, I have already been back a few times, however, I will go more if you 1. Make your own fries and 2. change the cheese a little bit. Best of luck! PS. Ditch Avery soda, tastes flat and«diety»… get Stewarts!(I do appreciate supporting local business but what taste’s good taste’s good!)
