Pizza being my favorite food, I’m always on a search for the greatest slices or grandmas. I remembered this place being better than it was today I tried one of each. I can say it looked better than it tasted. The sauce was good but the cheese tasted like some strange mozzarella mix. The grandma could have been cooked a bit longer making it more crunchy. I can honestly say that I don’t need to go back.

I tend to visit frequently this little hole in the wall quite often since it is very close to my house. Like previous reviewer said, the food here is pretty inconsistent and so are the prices. Sometimes, I can get 4 rolls for $ 20 other times it cost $ 16 or $ 20.25. I am guessing because the high school staff they hire has a high turnover rate, but the mainstay faces are usually nice. I do like the buffalo rolls, chicken sandwiches and the chicken buffalo rolls but only if you are lucky to have it made fresh.

I ordered a pizza and spaghetti. Both were very bland. Needed garlic and some spices. Ask them to spice it up!

I actually frequent this place several times a month, so it might be surprising to anyone who might note the 3-star review. My problem? The food here is extremely inconsistent! You really need to know how to word your order correctly if you want your food to be good. In short? If you don’t list some very specific preferences(such as «extra spicy, less cheese, light bake»), your food will suck. It’s that simple. They’ll just take an old slice or an old roll, warm it up slightly(or occasionally burn the bottom), and you’ll never want to come back here again. There were times where I’ve ordered pizza rolls with extra cheese and they’ve actually cut old ones open and sprinkled a bit of extra cheese on top, reheated them, and served me those – it was unappetizing to say the least. However, when you customize your order and/or you get lucky and the chef makes your food fresh – it’s amazing. You can really taste the difference versus the stale, old slices and rolls, and I don’t mind the longer wait if my food is fresh. The chicken rolls, spinach rolls, and buffalo chicken rolls here and DELICIOUS,(as long as you customize them or they’ll be subpar, trust me). The garlic knots and meatballs here are also great. The prices here are very reasonable. You can get a large pie for a little over ten bucks or a chicken roll for less than five. To summarize: Great, affordable Italian food – just make sure it’s made fresh!

The square slice I got last night was quite good. It cost $ 2.50. But I would rather pay more for a good slice. The new pizzeria«The Square» is a bargain at $ 2 but their slice is not nearly as good as J&R. One thing — the place is a tiny hole in the wall so there’s not much seating. P. S. I have now tried the regular slice. My only complaint is that the sauce is bland.(A little oregano would help!) I find this to be a recurring problem at S.I. pizzerias — sauce that is too bland or too sweet. Otherwise a very good sized slice with plenty of cheese and crust that is not too thick. BTW I tried a square slice next door at Via Ponte and it was also not as good as J&R.

This place used to be called«Nina’s Pizzeria» but they sold it and now it’s J & R. This place used to be packed with high school girls from St. Joseph by the Hill and kids from P. S.39 and even the kids getting off the bus from I.S. 49 and I.S. 2 but now not so much. It’s nothing compared to the old days when Nina’s Pizzeria still existed.
