I’ve grown up playing golf and have now made it a career. This course isn’t the toughest, the best maintained on the planet but it’s way above average. They put on great outings, take care of there customers, help charities make money and have rolled out the red carpet for my school team. There greatest asset is the staff. From the guys that mow the grass to the folks in the pro shop you could not be treated any better. I am not being nice to them or trying to do them a favor I’m just blown away after two years of golfing there and bringing clients for playing lessons. I appreciate you very much. Bring a lot of duff balls when you play here. The management doesn’t aerate or mark hazards. The fairways are hard, dry and uneven. You may also find an occasional protruding rock once in a while. The tee boxes were littered with broken tees with cigarette butts scattered about. At each tee box, we had to clean off an area to tee off of. Pushing a tee in the ground would break a tee. We discovered using an old tee hole was the trick. Bring a lot of extra tees if you come here. We played here twice this year. Both times were early morning tee times. The second time was after two days of heavy rains, thinking the fairways would be softer and in better condition after the heavy rains. Not a chance. Expect your ball to take a hard awkward bounce into either to the left or right neighboring fairway every time. It’ll continue to roll through adjoining fairways until stopping in the tall grass or hazards. I noticed more than the usual amount of golfers looking for their lost balls at this golf course. Even low handicappers with pin point accuracy will lose their share of balls. Making divots will ruin your woods and irons, you’ll have new nicks by the end of your day. Save your good clubs. If you have a set of ‘practice’ clubs, this is the place to use it. But this isn’t the course that will improve your game either. After a while we played with the duff balls we found instead of our own. I was able to ‘tryout’ a variety of balls, from range balls to Tour balls. I found a ball I liked and I’m sticking to it. I’m taking my new favorite ball on another golf course, never to return to Deer Pass.

When you pull in off I-71, you might wonder what you’re getting yourself into when you see the mostly unpaved parking lot and small clubhouse, but the actual golf course plays better than those first impressions. Other reviews online described Deer Pass as a «beginner’s course,» and I can see where they are coming from with the overall look of the relatively short course(5,878 yards), little sand, and some unfinished tee boxes, but there are also a couple challenging aspects such as plenty of blind shots(either over hills or around tight corners) as well as some water holes like the narrow 4th hole and an island par 37th hole that had some significant wind in play(at least that’s how I explain my ball taking a swim). The course is a bit too long of a trip for all but the far south Cleveland suburbs, especially with so many other great public courses in the area. A look at the website is encouraging, though, as there appears to be a commitment and plan to slowly improve the course. One improvement in the last couple years that has paid off dividends: the hot dog off the grill is probably the best I’ve had in the area.
