I stopped by the basement kitchen today and got a lasagna that was the best I’ve had in years!!! I also saw that they have sausage too, made by some company named Transylvanian style deli or something like that, anyway, I got the smoked sausage that the women over at the store said was like a hunter sausage. It was AMAZING!:) my mouth is watering as I write this… It’s a very cultural sausage company. When I asked the women about the sausage I got very interested in the Romanian I recommend trying some sausage on your next stop at the basement kitchen!!! Omg!!! I can’t believe this!!! This is amazing, THEYCANNOLISAS A SPECIAL!!!

Basement Kitchen is the open to the public Italian food portion of Mascio’s Italian Specialty Foods who specialize in the manufacture of Arancini, a Sicilian fried rice ball. These are manufactured, frozen, and distributed wholesale to a small number of specialty food retail outlets in the area and more to come. The arancini come in 2 sizes and a variety of flavors, including a few gluten free options, as well as dessert varieties. At the Basement Kitchen, in addition to the arancini, you can also get a variety of handmade Italian dishes, with meat or meatless, including a delicious lasagna, baked pasta, polenta, meatball and sausage sandwiches, artisan salads, etc. No dine-in area, but terrific to take home for dinner or to stop in and grab lunch. She can also do large pans of the pasta dishes if you need to serve more people. The family has lived in Georgetown and owned homes on this block of South Angelo Street for generations and hearkens back to the Italian heritage of the Georgetown neighborhood. Truly authentic dishes!

The real deal Italian food in Georgetown! Buonissimo! The lasagna is perfect for picking up on the way home and having a delicious ready-made dinner. They even had amazing vegetarian options for my friend(lasagna, frittata, salads, polenta), although I prefer meat dishes. Especially yummy is the meatball sandwich. Everything reminded me of the summers I spent in Italy — which makes sense as I found out from the owner that she was born in Italy. Bravo to this hidden gem in Georgetown.
