I had lunch here yesterday. A sandwich made-to-order and a bottle of Coke. The service was friendly and helpful. My only complaints would be that it was kinda cold in there, and my Coke tasted kinda funny. I checked the label. It expired on 29 Dec 08… Gross.

I went to Grown Folks several weeks ago, and have been thinking about it ever since. Illume(that’s a capital«I»), the owner, is a radiant and friendly woman, who runs the shop with her two grown sons. It’s an unexpected place, truly one of a kind. They make no pretense of trying to be a hip, «typical» coffeeshop. Thank God! For example, the tables have nice white tablecloths, and great sandwiches are available, built on the spot to your specifications. Yet there is a nice couch(I wouldn’t want a coffeeshop without one!) and their espresso is quite good. Most of all, though, I enjoyed the open, interesting exchange I had with Illume, and the smiling, helpful service of her two sons. I wish Grown Folks were closer to my «normal» locales!

I was recently introduced to this warm and inviting coffee shop on Beacon Hill and am thrilled. I’ve been there twice this week and neither time have I had coffee. This family owned coffee shop is a true gem. The drinks are strong and reasonably priced. There is an assortment of «adult beverages» as well and pastries along with a robust sandwich bar. The syrups are local — made by DaVinci. The staff is always welcoming and there is plenty of seating and free WiFi is available. There are comfy chairs by the fireplace and lots of tables for chatting or computing as well. A few bar stools look out onto Beacon Avenue. I look forward to tasting my way through the menu and warming myself up with the delicious soups all winter!

Almost every morning, mother pushes my twin babies in their enormous stroller the two miles from our NewHolly house to Grown Folks. She wouldn’t do that if they weren’t doing something right. And they are. Actually, they’re doing almost everything right. They make good soups, salads, sandwiches and drinks. There are healthy options as well as decadent ones. They added breakfast sandwiches recently, but I’d already finished my doughnut this morning before I noticed the sign.(Know what else they have? Strongbow cider! I’m going back tonight.) You can choose to relax by the fireplace, or you can sit by the TV with non-stop political coverage. Either way, you’ll be there a while. Outspoken conservatives may be shot down, but otherwise everyone is welcome at Grown Folks – even tiny babies.

Before I even review, I should probably say that I’m from San Francisco(yes, born and bred. A true native. We do exist! We just all moved when we turned eighteen and couldn’t afford the rents). I love Seattle truly and deeply, but sometimes I miss SF and all it entails. And this place reminded me of home. It’s small, but bright, comfortable and really has everything you might want. Beer, wine, coffee, sandwiches, sweets. And chocolate. Nice art on the walls, free wifi, really friendly people working, and a great crowd of unique people instead of the same hipster/yuppie hybrid that I get so tired of in Ballard.(Oh, c’mon. You know you get tired of em too). I was there for the VP debate, which the owner had organized with a local group, so it was a bit crazy, but it was so comfortable that I am seriously considering driving here from Ballard for my coffee shop study sessions. And considering that I’m so lazy that moseying over to Frelard for a beer seems like an odyssey, you know I really dug this place. We stayed for a bit after the debate to finish our beer(the small amount left after 90 minutes of the Palin drinking game — best debate ever!) and didn’t even realize they were actually closed. None of those heavy sighs and impassioned sweeping I get at many coffee shops twenty minutes before closing. Beacon Hill, you lucky, lucky neighborhood. This shop’s a keeper.

I love this place! I’m so glad they opened. The folks that work there are so nice. The drip coffee is good and absurdly cheap(85 cents for a 12 ounce drip). They’ve made a nice cozy atmosphere in there. I had a sandwich the other day and it was quite tasty. Lastly, If you have ever wondered(as I have) if there is a coffee shop in Seattle that is not overrun with badly behaved children, wonder no more. The atmosphere is definitely not aimed at moms who want a few minutes to let their kids run around. A great place to do work on your laptop. They have free wifi too.

This place has only been open a few weeks and I’m blown away by all the reviews. Ya know what? They’re all as good as they say they are. Staff is really friendly and the folks know what your normal drink is after a couple of times passing by. They are adding fresh in-house made baked goods(the cupcakes and cinnamon rolls are yummy goodness) to complement the soups and sandwiches menu. Skip the beer and wine offerings and grab some good coffee out of a proper espresso machine. Overall, nice atmosphere and nice folks at Grown Folks. Super recommended!

Grown folks is a great coffee house, I’m normally not a fan of coffee places, but i would frequent Grown folks. The setting and vibe put me at ease. Along with the coffee, they offer real food like sandwiches, soups, and salads, and even serve beer and wine. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and laid-back. I never felt rushed during my experience at Grown Folks, which was a refreshing change. At last, a venue where my coffee friends can get coffee, and I can get food & a beer under the same roof!

The best espresso bar I’ve been to yet. Super friendly staff, excellent food and drink. The atmosphere is peaceful and a great place to relax and find the drive to finish your day or night off satisfied or to start your morning right with inspiration for success. I recommend the fruit smoothies.

This place is right on my way to work in an area that really needs a good coffee shop/place to hang out! The drinks are great and the one sandwich I had so far was great too!

I’m a personal friend of the owner but I know the family has put their blood, sweat, and tears into this coffee shop! They offer espressos, salads, soups, customizable sandwiches. Atmosphere is cozy! I can foresee it as a great venue for those to study(free wifi) or book club(now serving beer and wine). Loads of free spots in the parking lot which is a nice plus.
