This is a great source of information when going to see a show in Seattle. Yes, it does include lots of advertising, but almost nothing worthwhile in life is free.
I used to go to the symphony a ton, and it was always nice to pick up a copy of the Encore magazine to be able to read about the upcoming concert. They change the main content of the magazine monthly — at different times I’ve seen various members of the orchestra highlighted. Often, there will be some sort of background or description on the type of show you’re seeing. At the symphony, it’s not out of the ordinary to actually see Maestro Schwarz’s thoughts on the evenings concert and why he chose the music he did in the Encore magazine.
Encore magazine stretches way beyond the Seattle Symphony. You can pick up a copy when you see an event at many Seattle venues, including the 5^th Ave Theater, The Moore, the Paramount, Seattle Opera and PNB to name a few. In addition to its Seattle audience, Encore magazine also covers arts in Tacoma and the Eastside and reaches over 2 million arts patrons a year.
I honestly believe that by picking up a copy of the Encore magazine at whatever show you’re going to will further enhance your evening. Why? Because it’s chock full of awesome information! Do you know who performs on the timpani? Do you know the name of the ZZ Top guy on first violin? Want to know what else that chick playing Sally Bowles has performed in? Want to know who choreographed «Mamma Mia»? Or do you just really want to know the name of that ‘one song’? It’s all right there in your copy of Encore magazine.
Your magazine is also good for combating boredom. If you find yourself counting down the minutes to intermission, you can find lots of good stuff to read about, from top donors (I like to read through the entire list and see if I know anyone) to the tempting advertisements on where to dine.
So, if you’re lucky enough to find yourself taking part in Seattle’s vibrant cultural arts scene, be sure to pick up a copy of the Encore magazine the usher gives you as go find your seat. It’s worth it.
