This is a beautiful, intimate, all ages venue for non-commercial music tucked away on the fourth floor of the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford — a stately 100-year-old building surrounded by gardens and a park that was once a boarding school for«orphaned and wayward girls» run by nuns. Now it’s a home for wayward music and other performing arts events. It’s a sit-down-and-listen kind of place, but the vibe is informal and friendly. Seats 150 people maximum. 28-foot ceilings, stained glass windows, amazing views, lush acoustics, nice concert grand piano. Unamplified music works best here, but there is an excellent sound system when needed. On-site parking, wheelchair access, and close to #16 and #44 bus stops. Ten nights per month are curated by local non-profit org Nonsequitur and are devoted to various kinds of adventurous/experimental music: modern composers, free improvisers, laptop minimalists, ambient droners, phonographers, out-jazzers, sound artists, strange intermedia hybrids — challenging, unusual music that doesn’t fit into tidy little boxes, or make much money. The rest of the time, the space is rented from Historic Seattle for performing arts events: readings, theater and dance performances, and concerts(classical, folk, jazz, world, etc.). What you won’t generally find here is music that is better suited to bars, clubs, cafes, or other commercial venues — but there are plenty of other places to hear rock bands, DJs, and hip hop, and the Chapel’s acoustics are not so great for that kind of thing anyway. This is a place to really listen, and hear something you probably won’t find elsewhere.
