WARNING! NOHOMEMADEICECREAMHERE! I walked in super excited to try some homemade ice cream… Whomp whomp: fridge full of thrifty buckets!!! In their defense, the store appeared neat and clean. The lady behind the counter was friendly. They do make all kinds of tostilocos and etc. I left with a large cup of mixed fruits, it was ok. Note to owners: the market is open for homemade ice cream, give it a shot again!

I don’t understand why all the reviews say it was homemade ice cream, it was just thrifty ice cream and the paletas were the kind you could buy at the market. Paletas were $ 2 ea and let me re-iterate…it was store bought prepacked types of paletas. If i wanted thrifty ice cream, I would have gone to rite-aids…it’s cheaper.

It’s been sold to new owners. No more home made ice cream or paletas. This place won’t be the same

This Ice cream parlor has been here since i could remember, glad it hasn’t been kicked out by all the pretentious restaurants. They have thier own flavors, My favorite are chongos and cheese. Perfect location especially when your walking down fourth street.

After I met a friend for some lunch in downtown Santa Ana, he asked me if I had had Mexican ice cream before. A little confused, I mentioned that I had had paletas before but he said that there was a place down the street that had the ice cream itself(not popsicle form). As the curious foodie, I agreed to head over. It was a small little shop that was cash only and quite mom-and-pop. The majority of things were in Spanish and the clientele didn’t really speak any English. We wandered over to the Mexican ice cream area(they sell other ice cream too in the first display — Thrifty flavors which are still good) past the paletas. I was very curious about the queso(cheese) one and tried a tad of that. Then I opted for the chongos(milk and cinnamon candy). It was great! I quite enjoyed the rich, creaminess of the milk flavor that was very well flavored with cinnamon. There were also soft pieces of the Mexican candy in. I guess the best thing I could liken it to is if you had cookie dough ice cream but the cookie dough was snickerdoodle dough. Delish!

Atfer eating lunch at Mil Jugos with my cousin, I was on a search for some good ice cream. I found this place on Unilocal and I thought it was pretty close to walk to, but turns out it wasn’t as close as I thought. Any way we needed the walk, lol. Ok the ice cream is amazing! Fresh, delicious, and mouth watering. Strawberry paleta made with was very good. I have also tried a couple of their home made ice creams and they are delicious. Staff is very friendly here and it is a must try if you are in the area.

Paletas! I’ve been living in Santana for how long and didn’t come across paletas, let alone this little shop until now? I got the watermelon paleta and my gf got the vanilla. Both are equally delicious. $ 1.50 a pop. There are other ice cream treats, but this is legit. The store was packed with families and kids looking for a cool treat. The lone lady handled it all with ease and took the time to explain the flavors to us chinitas. Definitely will be coming back.

Small little ice creamery shop that also make tortas and hot dogs and other little quick bites. Located off 4TH st. in Downtown Santa Ana. Came in here this afternoon for a look. I have always been curious about this place. Alas it was warm enough to split a ice cream. There was a guy ahead of us that was ordered a torta that looked so good. But, I was jonsing for someting refreshing. I will be trying the torta soon. Umm this place is super cheap.

All their ice creams were great. :) I especially liked their Queso/Cheese flavor! Tastes like cottage cheese/cream cheese goodness.

THEGIST: Skip the row of Carnation branded ice cream and go for their Home made ice cream! There are flavors here you would never find at any other Ice Cream Stores! The place sells some other food(churros and hot dogs) too, but ice cream is key. OVERALL: I headed down to La Nueva Reyna De Michoacan after enjoying some pupusas at El Puposodromo because my friends and I were wanting some ice cream. I really do love Unilocal for helping me find close and random places which turn out to be true gems. La Nueva Reyna De Michoacan is my newly found gem. I love ice cream… and I really really love fresh homemade ice cream! This place doesn’t look like somewhere you would find good ice cream, but Unilocalers all know not to judge places just by the looks right?! In this ice cream shop you will find some great tasting and very unique flavors that appear to be slightly melted in some white buckets, but it’s not really melted, its just freshly made ice cream! $ 1.75 for one scoop(which is a massive scoop it might as well be two). $ 2.35 for two scoops. The homemade flavors on the day I went and tried were(*= recommended by me): 1) Chongos– tastes like Red Hot Cinnamon candy– Very interesting! 2) Café– really rich coffee taste! 3) Queso/Cheese– tastes like vanilla mixed with cottage cheese chunks. may sound odd, but it’s pretty good! 4) *Fruta Seca– This one is very unique, it tasted like marshmallow with real bits of dried fruit. 5) *Platano– This one was actually banana nut and it was really really good for those of you who like banana flavor. It tasted like banana bread with bits of nuts. 6) *Fressa Agua– mini chunks of strawberry in each lick! This is my favorite of all flavors, but I am also a strawberry flavor fan. I really enjoyed that the strawberries were everywhere in this ice cream. La Nueva Reyna De Michoacan has other different flavors that I didn’t try on this day like Tamarindo(Tamarind), galleta(cookie), limon(lemon), mango, coco(chocolate), ciruela(plum), ropompe(eggnog-ish), cajeta(caramel), nuez(walnut) and other specialty flavors I wasn’t able to translate with my high school Spanish skills. ENVIRONMENT: This is the type of ice cream shop to get your ice cream to go and enjoy it outside where the streets are bustling with the locals. It’s clean inside but older than shops you may be used to going to. SERVICE: Service was really good! The person who was helping us did not mind that my 7 friends and I wanted to try almost every flavor she had. She even gave everyone and additional mini scoop of another homemade flavor that we didn’t ask for to allow us to try some flavors. THATISGREATMARKETING! If she didn’t give us the Platano flavor as an additional sample on our order we would not have known it was one of the best flavors there!

Met up with a fella here yesterday for work who’s on a cool but neverending mission to try all the Mexican eateries in OC. It brought him to La Nueva Reyna de Michoacan, which he couldn’t quite pronounce, but hey, he tried and gotta give him props for venturing into the enclave with his Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirt and all. It’s a small ice cream shop located right on the main drag of downtown Santa Ana’s bustling Hispanic business district. In addition to the regular ol’ American flavors, the real draw here are its homemade Mexican flavors. Ask for a sample, they’ll be more than happy to let you try any of the flavors. There’s chongas(don’t ask me what that is completely, but it had a really nice, sweet and cinnamon-y kick), cajeta, caramel, walnut, guayaba or guava, dried fruit, cottage cheese(!), mango, plum and a host of other flavors I can’t recall. Oh, the guayaba wasn’t available, it’s a seasonal fruit, try back in the fall. I liked the chongas best but wound up with walnut. I should have gotten a double scoop. La Nueva Reyna de Michoacan is also known for its paletas or ice cream bars, mostly in tropical fruit flavors with guava, coconut, pineapple, etc. The strawberry one had a large frozen berry affixed at the bottom of the ice cream bar. Might have to get that next time. $ 1.25 to $ 1.50 for a scoop of ice cream or a paleta.
