It’s not surprising that this place closed down, even in San Gabriel Valley. Starting a branch of a Japanese pizza chain in America is just asking for it! I mean, who would eat pizza with roe or potatoes… and above all, corn?! *crickets*… I w o u l d. So living in Japan, I’ve had the pleasure of trying out Strawberry Cones Modern Fine Pizza for myself, especially because Pizza Hut is rare and absolutely overpriced for the amount of food you get. When I first heard the name, I literally(and I’m sure many feel the same way) thought that this was an ice cream shop. A few of my friends and I decided to have a movie night. We had the alcohol down. All we needed was some pizza, and that’s when Strawberry Cones came through for us. Yes, the name of the restaurant raised some eyebrows, and we were still getting used to the high expensive prices. In the end, the pizza was quite special to say the least, but damn did it do something to satisfy my bottomless hunger for it while in Japan! This chain only has one branch running outside of Japan in Vancouver, and the menu looks relatively the same. Take a look at their English website for the full list. Prices I’m sure are not as high as they are in Japan, but if you ever get the opportunity to come visit here, please be sure to try out this place! My friends and I were SUPERHUNGRY, so we ordered the following: Potechiki(Fried & Chicken) [600 Yen = $ 7.32] A side of chicken nuggets and potato wedges… which weren’t bad at all! We wished we had Buffalo wings with ranch, but this was a good starter. American Meat Lovers Pizza [Medium, 1890 Yen = $ 23.05] You have one California boy and two people from Chicago; of course we know our pizza, and of course we need to get one filled with MEAT! This pizza was bomb! A thin crust pizza with sausage, bacon, peppers, onions, mushrooms… it’s the quintessential combo pizza of Japan. It was a good reminder of what I left back home, like Costco. If you’re visiting Japan, I would avoid getting this one. But if all you eat everyday is rice and miso soup, by all means it’s time to order this baby! Teriyaki Hamburger & Hokkaido Potato Pizza [Medium, 1950 Yen = $ 23.78] This was my choice! At first we struggled to read the Japanese, and we thought it was gyu-tan pizza(cow tongue, a speciality of Sendai) but it turns out to be hamburger patty meat. This pizza was HELLA good! It was my favorite… and the potatoes added a kickass touch to it. I know Hokkaido is famous for their potatoes, and damn this did not disappoint. I want to order this again! And being Japanese, it had a dosage of mayonnaise to add some extra flavors. Four Seasons/New Kids Style Pizza [Large, 2850 Yen = $ 34.76] A four in one deal with this pizza… and it has so many different kinds that would shock a whole bunch of people. Included in this pizza was tama-chan, corn pizza(which was surprisingly good, almost like Chinese corn filled pastries), Hokkaido potato tuna, and teriyaki hamburger. I’m not sure which represents which season, but damn it was all pretty good. A bit pricey, but hey, pizza doesn’t come along too often. DAMN I am super hungry just writing about this! While the pizzas were hella expensive, it’s Japan, and this place actually does cut it for us when it comes to fulfilling those hunger pains you have of some good food from home. Definitely check this chain out, or call me if you’re over… we’ll order in and have ourselves a movie marathon with our kotatsu to stay warm. Or maybe I am just missing some good, legit pizza!!!
