This is the largest WU Dog location, and one of the few with indoor dining tables. Somewhat like a sports bar since they have beers(Bud, Heineken, Corona, Sierra Nevada) and a plasma TV on the wall, with satellite hookup showing the sports channel. I came here while I waited for the nearby glass shop to repair a small chip on my car’s windshield awhile back. The counter is a little messy, so it took me a little while to figure out all the choices: breakfast menu board(scramble eggs with toast, choice of meat toppings) + sausages menu + taped notes + many signs with additional items — chicken fried steak and eggs($ 5.99), chorizo and eggs($ 5.99), breakfast burrito($ 4.99), fish sandwich($ 3.99), specials, etc. I got the chicken apple sausage, with fries and a self-service fountain drink. The place is not well maintained, not very clean(on that particular day). The tables had not been wiped/smelled dirty, and the condiments table needed a refill. In the past, this place was a fancy tamale restaurant with elegant décor and really great service.

Terrible service, decent hot dogs. I went up to the counter and asked«What’s in the Veggie Chicago?» The guy looked at me and went«eeeehhh … I dunno.» … … … What? I had to walk over to the other menu to see for myself. I ended up ordering just the veggie dog and it took like 10 – 15 mins to prepare. How long does it take to make a freakin hot dog? The hot dog itself was decent and well priced, that said the service was a joke.

Randy Jackson would be proud… maybe. Judging by WUD’s rating distribution as a franchise overall, not just this location, people seem very confused by this place. I decided to visit for lunch twice to find out for myself. First of all, calling WUD better than East Bay’s top dog is just ludicrous. It’s not. But I’ll save that thought for another day. However, they are not as bad as some people make them out to be. What you actually get here is a wide selection(and I mean wide!) of hot dogs and links — all of them are way way above average. I’ve had the lemon chicken and the smoked chicken apple. They are very juicy, though a little on the greasier side. I didn’t find much need for ketchup or other sauces, perhaps the hot sauce only to make them spicier. Napkins, on the other hand, you will need. This is a fun place for lunch, especially if you can sit out on a warm day — with a large H.D. sandwich on one hand, a cold«soda» on the other, fries on the table… shades on… and just relaxing before heading back to work.

I first went to this What’s Up Dog out of shear desperation. I was starved and it is close to where I work. To be honest, I was slightly overwhelmed by their choices. I stared at the menu, zoning out for about four minutes, until I decided on the regular hot dog, corn dog, fries and a soda, which turned out to be too much greasy food for me in one sitting. The food wasn’t bad but I would not say by any means it was good. It is the kind of food that satisfies a craving or food to simply end your stomach eating itself away. Basically, it’s nothing more then a hot dog and greasy fries. It was not until later that I discovered they have Portuguese sausage, and I figured I had to try it. I have to tell you though, that I am Hawaiian and have a strong affinity for Portuguese sausage, egg and rice breakfast. I love Portuguese sausage so much that I can eat in anytime of day, except for the fact that here on the mainland, Portuguese sausage is very difficult to find. So, I tried the Portuguese sausage and I was sorrowfully disappointed. I wanted to like it, I really did, but the grease oozing out of the sausage was just too much for me, this in addition to just not tasting like a true Portuguese sausage. The waffles on the other hand are delicious! In short, this is a great place if you are hungry or starved for that matter, but not for the connoisseur of hot dogs.

Better than Top Dog! …and cleaner. Never would have found this place if I wasn’t going to pick up some bbq from Nate’s. It’s in the middle of nowhere. I got a Chicken Apple for $ 3.75. Very tasty and the bun is nicely toasted so it’s warm, crunchy, and soft. They have sauerkraut, onions, and relish as condiments inside a refrigerated platter on the side so its kept cold. I will definitely be back.

I will not go to the fast food joint that is on the next block, but I will go here. Because if I’m going to die of a heart attack eating greasy food, I might as well go all the way and order a chicken apple sausage with bacon cheese fries on the side and a soda. Nice, clean, and spacious location. Free soda fountain refill, no sharing you bastards! I kinda feel like it should be labeled as a Fast Food joint, but they’re too slow. And it can get really busy and crowded during lunch time.

Been looking for a place in San Francisco that has similar grilled sausages like Top Dog in Berkeley. Found this place a few months ago and have been coming here about twice a month. Service is good for a small business franchise, they bring your order right to your table. Very spacious and when it gets hot, they roll open all their windows, like eating outdoors, but out of the sun. The double dog deal is the best buy, 2 grilled sausages for $ 5.50. I’ve been looking for a great Kielbasa(Polish) and they got it here. Watch out for the Hot Links, they really got a kick! Overall, it’s good sausages, friendly service, reasonable price and doesn’t have limited lunchtime hours. Bring a friend with you and try the double dog deal.

Had the veggie dog(the sausage one?) and it was ok. The bread bun was definitely different, it was crusty like a french bread. Garlic fries were decent, could have been crispier but still tasty. I like that they have a large menu including vegetarian options. Space was large and clean, plus they are open all day so I can get lunch whenever I please, none of this 2pm closing BS.

Sterile. Spacious. Solitary. Never trust Mexican food from a clean joint. Same goes for hot dogs. They’re dirty, and so too, should be the vendor. The best thing about this place is that they answer the phone, «What’s Up, Dog?» Ha! Clever marketing, but I recall once seeing a 6 year old from the projects of Southie(Boston) getting his a** whopped by his mama for calling someone a «dog». Word to his mother. It was my fault. I should have steered clear of the sausage options(those calories should be reserved for Rosamundes) and stuck with the dogs. As a result, I was keeling over hours later from my Santa Fe Link which has red and green peppers and cilantro IN the link, not ON the link, much to my dismay. Props to the cashier who does a superb solo act of being über friendly, constantly keeping the place immaculate, and getting your order to you in a timely manner. The ultimate problem with What’s Up Dog is that with a name as ghetto as such, the interior is far too clean, far too white(the color, not the race), and far too much CNN on a big flat screen TV, for it’s own good. While the standard dog is tempting, and sitting, while being educated by the likes of Coop and Larry is scarce in SOMA, I’d rather save my bucks and pack a lunch. $$ 4 – 6 for a dog or link **Hot breakfast options also available

The typical veggie dog that costs more than a meat dog and isn’t all that good or interesting. But, on the bright side they have great topping options, it looked clean inside and there was a TV with a movie on. It was really just the location being close to where I was that made the place nice. Maybe the fancier meatier ones are better, although I’m skeptical.

What better way to have a hot dog than to have it wrapped in BACON! Great friendly place that satisfies… Also had a chance to go there and get breakfast one day. good, fast and economical. Definitely fills the niche that certain restaurants are missing in the City…

it’s nice to have a what’s up dog nearby. it’s a bit tough coming here when costco is so close, but a hotdog at costco is not the same as a bratwurst or hot link from what’s up dog. sure you walk out of costco with a $ 1.50 polish dog with refillable drink, and here you can have something similar for closer to $ 5-$ 6. but you can’t get french fries at costco.

This place has OK hot dogs. They have an extensive menu that I definitely would not have expected. I think the main deterrent here is that the location is a little bit far away from everything else. I didn’t have a mind blowing experience, but for a hot dog joint the place was pretty clean… like a mixture between Subways and Chipotle, with Chipotle being higher on the cleanliness scale. I heard their fries were good, I did not try again as I already had a bag of chips and did not want to add onto my carb load. I would be willing to try this place again later when all the construction is done, until then I’m going to stick with 3 stars.

Now call me old fashioned but I think you should judge a restaurant on the food that defines it. I was expecting a great hot dog from What’s Up Dog but sadly it failed to deliver on that promise. My partner saw this place riding home and being a self confessed fast food gourmand I was eager to try it out. The space is pretty open and airy and the menu showed a lot of promise and I love a good hot dog. So I ordered up a Chicago Style Dog, a couple of Meatball Sliders for my man and we opted to share the Bacon Cheddar Fries. The Chicago Style Dog was disappointing in the extreme. For $ 4.25 I was expecting a decent size frank but was greeted with a bun stuffed with far too many condiments and not enough dog. The frank was tiny, barely jutting out from the edge of the bun and the toppings so overpowering I ended up forking a bunch of them out of the bun. Chicago style means you get relish, sliced tomato and some of those little yellow balloon shaped peppers whose name escapes me right now. If they toned down the toppings by half and upped the size of the frank it would have been spot on but as it stood it got a distinct D-. Now to the rest of the meal. The Bacon Cheddar Fries are actually topped with that nasty Velveeta type cheese sludge. If you are going to put that on your fries then please don’t call it ‘Cheddar’ as I was expecting nice grated cheese and not engineered cheese product. My partners meatball sliders first appeared as burger sliders and when I took them back up to the counter the man serving said«Well you just ordered sliders, so that’s what you got». I know that I ordered meatballs and for the sake of replacing $ 3 worth of product I don’t know why he had to back chat me. He replaced the dry looking burger sliders with meatball ones and they were actually delicious, far far better than the hot dog and fries. So overall I won’t be going back. Why? Well bad hot dog aside I really hate it when people in restaurants try and argue with their customers, it is so un-necessary and whilst it likely made him feel better it cost him a customer. You can get a much better hot dog just around the corner at Costco for a fraction of the price!

I went back today with a bunch of friends, and my only update is that I wish they could have turned up the heat a little bit(literally, not figuratively) — it was freezing in there! Maybe it’s out of their control, since the ceilings are pretty high and all the warm air may just rise to the top, but my bacon wrap dog just didn’t taste the same with my jacket on. Also, I wouldn’t recommend the burger sliders — a bit expensive for what you get. Still 3 stars, especially once the weather warms up.

Merry Christmas everyone! It is now 4:15pm Christmas Day, and I’m getting ready for my first meal. First off, let’s discuss how I got here… After my last meal at 10am yesterday from this place, which consisted of… Hamburger patty, two eggs over easy, and rice… I shared some garlic fries too… I’ve been barfing and faucet-assing since noon Christmas Eve. Now, The last two days prior I’ve eaten the same things my wife has and… she’s A-ok. Remember when I got those undercooked links in my first review? Yesterday when I got that hamburger patty… …it was red inside. Most people(as do I) know one should never eat frozen hamburger patties that aren’t cooked well-done(On the menu it says«hamburger steak». Misleading in my book. Every«hamburger steak» I’ve had is fresh ground, chuck or better, shaped into a patty, served with gravy and sauteed onions. I know, MYFAULT for wishful thinking) (e-coli heaven) I ate some of that. Not all, but I was too hungry, too cold, and too disappointed to walk back to this place. I thought… «ah, I’ll be ok, I got a iron stomach» Hey. I didn’t go to the hospital. I didn’t get a blood test. I don’t know for sure if I got food poisoning from What’s Up Dog. I do know… They can’t work a grill for shit. I do know… I’ll never go there again. I do know… Many of my co-workers who saw me puking into the trash can 3 times at work will never go there again either. How’s that for a Christmas Eve? Why five stars? I’ve finally learned my lesson!

After visiting this place a number of times, I can honestly say it’s great. I just had a «semi-Filipino» breakfast: Chicken Portuguese sausage(hence the semi-Filipino) and eggs over easy with rice) and it was delicious. The people who work there are pretty cool too. What’s really nice is that they’re open on Sunday which works out great because I have work weekends. Hope they stay in business for a while.
