I started noticing a pattern, every Thur-Sat night there is excessive drinking at Tikal Bar(Mission St @ Cortland St). Often times the ambulance has been involved or the police because violent behavior. The other night I found a man lying on the sidewalk in front of Tikal Bar moaning, covered in blood. On our block we have had two major incidents involving drunk people that have stumbled to our neighborhood, one attempting car theft and once someone pooped on our doorstep. Always leaving their leftover drinks, the calling card of this classy establishment. I know there are lots of bars like this in the area(Belinda’s & Coronitas comes to mind), but I think this one is the worst offender. This lack of respect to the community really upsets me. How can the bartender here allow this to happen? And why do I rarely see woman in this bar, unless its Sat night(are they escorts)? I think it is irresponsible. Tikal Bar’s presence in the neighborhood does not make me feel safe as a woman walking home at night.

I got a kick out of the fact that on US Independence Day I was entering Tikal Billiards Bar on Mission Street which is owned by an El Salvadorian(Maria), is named after the largest of the ancient ruined cities of the Maya civilization located in Guatemala and the guy sitting next to me(Gabriel) is Mexican. We were celebrating Independence Day by drinking beers, playing pool and chillin. Tikal was a major cultural and population center for the Maya civilization and so it is appropriate that this bar had its own culture and a very interesting population. Culture: Tikal is family owned and operated. Maria has owned the bar for over 21 years and bartends it with her daughter, Jessica, as her other daughter managed some of the bar back duties.
