Although I am not on a gluten-free diet, I am vegan, and Gluten Free Grocery has a kinds of yummy treats that are vegan friendly. Calvin is the shop owner and is very accommodating and helpful, but everyone who works there is amazing. I occasionally stock my office with Kale Chips and Granola from GFG, and Calvin hand delivers our orders. I sometimes come here twice a day for House Kombucha or Quinoa and Black Bean salad. They have lots of fresh pre packaged, organic, non GMO meals and tons of snack items. If you work in SOMA and don’t want to wait in line for 30 minutes and pay $ 12 for a burrito, Gluten Free Grocery is the place for you.

I can’t complain about the prices, well okay, I can, but I won’t since I pay people to do work for me all the time and this store has gone to work making sure that we can see what is on the shelf and know that we can eat it. We don’t have to look for a tag, or wonder or worry we can just eat it. It’s like a Weird Al song. I absolutely love the way Sophie is with my 10 and 11 year old children. Before you write a 1 star review, consider that they are the only store of this kind(that I know of) and if you’re just bitching at their prices, you’re basically attempting to say«If I can’t have it no one should.» If you can’t afford it or don’t want to spend the money, walk out the door, that’s your prerogative. Some of these reviews are lame and abuse the one star option.

I LOVETHISPLACE! It’s gluten free amazingness. It’s the first store front that is dedicated to gluten free. It was so fun shopping while I was in town with my family and I’m almost considering moving back to california just so be able to get access to this place because its carries all my gluten free faves and more. The have an online store but the cupcakes and such probably won’t ship outside the local bay area. BUMMER for me. But now I have a great go to place when I’m in town. Best stop in town.

Finally a place gluten free people can shop without needing to scan every ingredient list on every item. They have lots of options and choices to pick from. Parking is easy and close by. It’s a bit expensive. I purchased 3 full paper bags of groceries for $ 300.

My friend and I walked by this place on the way to the Giants game last night. We are both gluten free, and she is a former vegan. We saw the sign and impulsively decided to go in and check it out. THISPLACEISHEAVEN. I immediately asked the clerk why they haven’t opened 30 more stores all over the city so I can go like, every single day of my life. Ready made gluten free meals and snacks, vegan and gluten free cupcakes, breads, stuffed pasta shells, cereal, frozen dinners… everything my little heart desires. I bought the vegan and gluten free cupcakes since we were on our way to a pre-party for the game, and my friend bought a quinoa-based ready made lunch. The cupcakes were delish, and my friend enjoyed her quinoa snack. It was a little pricey, but everyone knows that gluten-free stuff just costs a little more. Sucks for us, but whatevs. I vow to come here once a month or so to stock up on my gluten free necessities. I am SOHAPPY this place exists!!!

I love the concept of this grocery store. They sell gluten-free stuff! Note that not all products in this store are certified GF meaning there could be products that are manufactured in factories where gluten is present. If you are trying to live the lifestyle of minimizing your gluten intake, then this store is for you! I like coming in here to get inspiration on GF foods. Mostly I come here to pick up a bag of delicious NanaJoe’s all organic granola for my sweetheart. It’s SFMade! I get him the Market Blend(handmade granola, seasonal fruit, almond, vanilla). Also I pick him up a bag of handmade Dosa Chips. They are non GMO and SOOO good! I highly recommend both. Oh yes and if you want GF baked goods, they sure have them here. Overall the prices here are pretty expensive but that’s normally the price that comes with shopping at niche specialty stores. You can find tons of GF stuff here that you wouldn’t find at Whole Foods.

GEM in SOMA. I LOVE this place. I spent forever in this store. Bought over $ 125 worth of goodies. They have a lot of variety of gluten free products as well as corn and wheat free products. YES, they have paleo bread! Their ice chip ginger mints were lovely. They have free samples too, so you can taste before you buy. They have a TON of frozen and cold items. Definitely would come back because they have Quinoa cereal! Lost of food you won’t be able to find at Whole Foods. Some of the prices are comparable and or cheaper than Whole Foods. Would come back in a heart beat!

Yes, they are spendy. In my own neighborhood I can find some of the same brands for a bit cheaper. However, knowing how much real estate costs in this neighborhood I find them to be rather fair. I really don’t think a lot of the costs are their fault. They’re not a huge grocer, most of their foods cannot be stocked in bulk for both store size and shelf life reasons and in general, when you try to go as local as possible, as organic as possible, gluten-free and all the other hot buzz words that send food prices spiraling in the end. Secondly, the people there really care about the food, they care about the stuff they put on their shelves, when Zico was found to be part of the campaign against having to label foods that contain GMO products they ended up stocking my favorite coconut water(The Raw Coconut one in a small bottle.) They take suggestions, they love to learn new places to either get food from or foods to try. I’m not just gluten free, I also eat mostly primal so it’s been fun working with them and going through the store and having them teach me more about gluten free products and then seeing my even more strict dietary needs for the primal/paleo lifestyle. All in all, the people and the quality products are what bring me back. This is a store in a neighborhood full of doctors, technologists and condos that you have to make $ 250k or more to even hope to afford or apartments that have rents starting around $ 5k. Of course they’re a little expensive, I can’t even imagine what their rent is like but it’s an oasis in the neighborhood for me. Coincidentally, they also work with my favorite new café in the neighborhood to provide materials for gluten free meals. I won’t name them here since it’s a review for GFG but it begins with 144. This is how community is built, not just consumer/customer relationships. Their 1 star review for prices is sad, it’s not this store’s fault that real food costs so much in this country. That one star needs to be aimed at Monsanto and their ilk.

I was extremely disappointed to learn that there was a $ 10 minimum for credit card purchases. Usually it didn’t matter because this place is a wonderland for me and I load up on so much stuff, but when I got a job nearby it meant a trek to Whole Foods for lunch instead: lower prices and they take any card. I understand the challenges small businesses face with credit card fees, but Small Foods a few doors down from them has it figured out, and they have a number of gluten-free items too. With the margins being made on some of these items($ 4 for a Maine Root sarsaparilla), I don’t understand why a few percent commission on a premium card would put them out of business. I still come here occasionally for the things I can’t find anywhere else. But as a mainstay they’ve let me down as a customer. There are plenty of good things to be found here, but if you just want a little treat make sure you have cash!

Since discovering my gluten intolerance, I have not enjoyed grocery shopping at all. So much work, searching labels, ingredient lists, wondering, gambling, feeling sorry for myself about all the things I can’t have anymore… until now! Thank goodness there was a GF Expo recently, where I found out this wonderful place exists! Whatever you see in here is safe for you to eat – what a concept! And there are free samples of unusual snacks and dips; brands and items I’ve never heard of, and several delicious foods that I was able to sample at the event but already knew they don’t sell at Whole Foods or the neighborhood natural markets(I’ve looked). Also, they are eager to answer questions and seem quite proud of what they do, as they should. I have no idea what some reviewers are complaining about with the pets? The place was quiet and spotless when I was there. The friendly co-owner said they moved into a new space not too long ago, so maybe it’s different now. If you are gluten-sensitive and are tired of feeling high-maintenance wherever you go, check this place out, it’s made for you!

Just had top notch customer service at this place. I’m cooking a number of items for Thanksgiving and my mother in law is GF and dairy free. I was struggling with the dressing, gravy, pie and rolls as well as the timing to get it all done. GF Grocery had it ALL! And, rather than wander around and find the items myself, a lovely staffer helped me out with recommendations and guidance. My mother in law is going to be in hog heaven. She’s new to GF and has been struggling with it. GF Grocery save me a lot of time and effort today.

I think this place is great and I will definitely shop here again. Yes, there are many products here that you can get at other places(Rainbow, Whole Foods, TJs), but this is one stop shopping. I don’t want to drive all over town because Trader Joes has some of my stuff and Whole Foods has others. I was surprised at the vast variety of items. I never thought I’d see gluten-free breadcrumbs or baguettes. I deducted a star because many of the items are poorly price marked. Most of the prices are labels on the shelf. For items in the fridge I couldn’t find prices on many items.

This location is new, and they just opened about 1 month ago. So, I’m not sure what location the earlier reviews are for… this place is great, and the owner is a gem. She spent 5 minutes w me today walking me through the store and her favorites. I’ve had a gluten allergy for over a decade, and its a dream come true to find a store that has such variety and choices. I really hope people flock to this place — I know I will be a regular.

You will LOVE this store, esp. if you are GF or celiac. I’ve been able to expand what I eat by shopping here which is always a challenge when one doesn’t eat gluten. Absolutely everything in this market is GF& there are so many wonderful & unusual products that you don’t see elsewhere. For instance, «Yehuda Matzo Style Squares» and«Lebini Kefir Cheese». Both of these are outrageously delicious and you can usually sample them at the front desk. Freshly made pastas with sauces that once again are very difficult to find. Be sure to ask about this one tomato sauce they sell here that is so yummy. It tastes like it was made fresh. No kidding! The owner will take you on a brief tour of the store if you ask & she’ll point out some of her favorite items & even give you some ideas on how to prepare them(evidently, she’s an accomplished cook). I definitely recommend this. Everyone that works here has aways been so helpful & kind. My partner isn’t GF, but loves the food that we buy here so he is now more or less GF. And, healthier for it. :)

This wonderful place says that it’s a Gluten Free Market but it so much more than that. It’s a place where customers who soon become friends can go to become educated or share information about the many natural ways to re-energize our bodies with the right ingredients. I found this place because many of my closest friends have various allergies and intolerances and researched and found this great place literally across the street from me. It’s an great place to share information and knowledge. It felt like I was chatting with my mother or other family members about learning to take care and heal the body naturally. Everything can be found in this beautiful, warm and cozy venue. I plan on sharing the information with friends and colleagues who work in the health field or who are affected with diabetes, HIV/AIDS or other illness. Check out this great Gluten Free Store which I now call the Healing Center to Live Longer. They also have tasty, tasty treats that are delicious. I started going there when I gave up peanut butter and switched to sunflower butter. The gluten free pasta is also delish. Give it a try and tell your friends too.

i always forget how much i like the dogpatch. good weather. not overly crowded. no tourists. industrial feel. the store is small and in a warehouse. there were 2 cats and a dog. all friendly and well kept. i have a hypersensitive sense of smell and i didnt detect any pet smells at all. the place was clean. owner is very nice. the entire store is gluten free obviously. they also have a fair amount of non-dairy stuff. a reasonable selection considering how limiting the shoppers’ criteria are. various breads, pizzas, pastas, cereal, desserts, crackers. also some ethnic foods. some of the products/brands you can find at other stores like whole foods, trader joes, and even in the gluten-free sections of normal grocery stores. some products/brands you probably can’t find elsewhere. everything is pretty expensive. bottom line for me: you can survive on a gluten-free diet without coming here. but, they have everything you could want in one convenient location, for which you will pay a premium.

This place is disgusting. I stopped by last week because so many people told me I should go. Upon entering, I walked into a wall of what I thought was cat urine smell and was greeted by a passel of cats and a cute Airedale. Nevertheless, I bucked up and proceeded to delve more deeply into the store because, as a Celiac, I have to eat. I nearly choked to death while browsing the aisles of this place only to discover that it was not in fact kitty litter that reeked to high heaven but a different Airedale that was extraordinarily foul smelling. I’m one the biggest dog lovers on this planet but come on, if you can’t keep your pooch bathed properly, keep him at home. Also, as a retail store, you should have a minimum standard of cleanliness. GF customers deserve much better than a rank smelling warehouse filled with roaming animals the reminded me more of the Cat Lady’s home than an actual store. I’m thinking of reporting this place to SF health inspectors, it was that foul. As for the products and selection, there were few items that I couldn’t find at Rainbow, Whole Foods or even in some cases, Safeway. Not worth the trip.

Gluten-free nirvana! A huge space in Dogpatch, shared by an architect’s workplace and a grocery store… who would have figured? I took my gluten-free friend to see this place and she lit up at the sight of all the products and wares. It’s overwhelming to see so much gluten-free stuff in one place instead of having to hunt for it in regular grocery stores. They had pretty much every item I had ever known about, and then some. There was a good representation of different cultures, including Korean, Japanese, Thai and Mexican foods. There was even a sweets section, beckoning… The only issue I had was with the mini-cupcakes, which I found to be too sweet for my taste. The coconut tapioca with pineapple salsa was also not my favorite. But the tamales? Delicious. This won’t be the most economical shopping trip of your life, but it will free yourself up to more variety in your meal planning. There were definitely things I never thought I’d see gluten-free. Big thanks to the very knowledgable and super accommodating manager, who offered up answers to all our questions with ease. He also offered up two of my favorite words in all the English language. FREESAMPLES. Woo!

Dog friendly! Wonderful owner! Woo! What a terrific idea. We stumbled upon a postcard for GFG when we were at Rickshaw bags and took a walk over. We also happened to be there when they were doing an interview for the San Francisco Chronicle so look for my quote! My friend was standing outside with our dogs when the lovely owner walked past with her two dogs and invited her and all the dogs to come inside. Wow! I like that GFG goes beyond the typical stuff you can buy at Whole Foods. I was so excited to see gluten free raviolis, gluten free gnocchi, gluten free bread crumbs and gluten free soy sauce. They also carried nut flours and coconut flour — all things usually impossible to find. Tons of snack items like brownies and crackers. This is THE place to come if you want gluten free items for cooking. The manager, Calvin, was super helpful and he mentioned that they would help us find any GF products we need that they don’t currently carry. Woo! I like rl’s idea of having gluten free ready made items. Perhaps they’ll expand into a future café?
