I recently discovered that they closed… RIP Escape From New York Pizza!!! :( I went to elementary school back in the days just up the street(Harvey Milk) and would frequent here when I had the chance. I returned from living for the East coast to find they were closed…

Walked in and found signs saying cash only. I only had my debit card and the kid told me sorry and shrugged his shoulders. So I attempted to order online for pick up and was given a message that the store closed at 11pm so I was unable to place my order. I’m sitting in my car looking into the restaurant and they are open and it’s 11:30pm. Open sign is still lit and they have slices ready to be served. It’s not in the universe for me to have pizza tonight:(. I’m off to Orphan Andy’s. I know they take CC and open 24H.

I love the pizza here … I’m disappointed that, lately, they seem to have dropped Coke products for Pepsi(so when I ask for a diet Coke I’m served a diet Pepsi with no notice, which Just Isn’t Cool!). Especially like the hawaiian slices. Wish they’d deliver to my neighborhood(the Excelsior)

The pizza with spinach, mushrooms, and balsamic drizzle — get that. It will not disappoint.

This place is super good! Got a slice of cheese and it really hit the spot! Out of the 3 pizza by the slices in the area, this is my favorite!!!

Ya know, call me old fashioned, but when somebody puts a tip in your jar, the least you can do is say«thank you.»

Looking at all of the pizza by the slice options, very few looked appetizing. You could tell they’d been sitting out for a while and see the hardened pools of grease. I picked a slice from a pizza that looked to be on the fresher side, but still wasn’t that impressed. Also, $ 5 for an average sized slice is a little much for the quality you’re getting.

The Castro has changed so much since I moved away that I was shocked to find the same little pizza place where I used to buy slices over 20 years ago. There are only a handful of restaurants in the neighborhood that have been around that long. .. so these people must be doing something right! When I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly young staff who offered half a dozen or so pizzas with a variety of interesting toppings. As always, the crust was crisp and flavorful with just the right amount of stuff on top. And at less than $ 5 a slice and big enough to cover a dinner plate, I was only sorry I didn’t get another one for breakfast the next morning.

* I just called again after being having my calls dodged by the owner and finally spoke to someone useful. The cashier made a note in the system regarding my card and at least acknowledged the call. Management should take a cue for this girl… Pizza is great, but the staff(Excluding drivers and a guy I talked to on the phone named Julio) need work. They are rude, sound bored and seem pretty clueless when it comes to running a pizza joint. Now I am sure they are teenagers just working for the summer, but I don’t expect snobbery when my patronage is what keeps your paycheck flowing. What has me really upset? Please read below: I usually order online, but because of some problems with their system, I had to call for a delivery. When I called I told the guy on the phone(Isaac), that I had a coupon for my pizza. When the pizza arrive, not only had he not applied the coupon to my order, but my entire credit card number was written out on the receipt along with my address and full name. WTF? I have called to speak to a manager and was promised a return call the same day. Never happened. I just called again to speak to a manager and they barely there, airhead staff once again could barely answer my phone calls. I may be a little more cranky because I am currently pregnant, but it is never a good idea to expose customer credit card information or to brush off a loyal customer. I will order again, but only online. Word of advice to the owner, train your staff better and make sure they are actually competent.

There are many imitators but there’s only 1 Escape for me! Nice kids working there that keeps the counters/tables clean. Love the wall of autographs. Yummy garlic, potato, pesto pizza my fav always get that one. So good when it pops out of the oven fresh. I only order by the slice so you can try different ones.

I’m not a huge fan of the pizza, but that’s because I’m a pizza snob and I get the goods from A Slice of New York in the south bay. It’s still pretty good. I get the artichoke, feta, sun dried tomato, and spinach slice every time. The 5-star review is based on the customer service. These folks keep a calm and pleasant demeanor no matter what drunken hot messes walk through the joint. Kudos to them for what they have to endure literally every night being on a street lined with bars and testosterone.

pros: perfect after drinking spot. pesto pizza. cons: super anal about condiments. other than that i have nothing else much to say. it’s located conveniently on castro st next to the bars, so it’s perfect to drop in for a quick slice after you’ve consumed mass amounts of alcohol.

Pizza is fine, it’s the staff that will keep me from returning. When I left, I looked up «surly» in the dictionary and found a pic of the girl who reluctantly served me a slice. With so many options around here? Go elsewhere.

As a recent Bay Area transport, I have been looking for a pizza place in the San Francisco area. After giving this place two chances, I am convinced there must be better pizza in the area, and they should also consider a renaming, as their pizza is not reminiscent of a New York slice at all. This place is a decent spot to get a quick slice, but if you’re looking for a great pie, I would suggest trying somewhere else. My search for a quality pizza joint continues…

Admittedly, I’ve only ever eaten here drunk, as have most of their clientele I bet. While a hoard of sweaty boys and girls head to Nizario’s, I like this place a little better because there’s a smaller crowd, more seating, and I like a «flatter» kind of pizza. Nizario’s is pretty thick, but it depends on your preference. My fave would be the potato pesto pizza. But again, it’s still late-night pizza, this is nothing I would ever eat sober in the day time.

2 ½ stars extra half star for opening late. Completely average New York style pizza by the slice for a quick and forgettable meal. You may find yourself here late at night after all other options in the area are closed, at which point you will hope and pray that the veggie slice they stick into the warmer is not still soggy when they serve it to you. If your worst nightmares have come true, it helps to shake large amounts of the powdered cheese, oregano and red chili flakes that will kill all present bacteria and also overpower any of the existing bland flavors present in the food.

Looking for a quick meal in the Castro, well, I’m sure there are lots of tastier, cool places to go. But if you are looking for cheap and satisfying, this will do in a pinch. It’s a pizza joint with everything you would expect a pizza joint to have. It’s not superior pizza but it doesn’t suck. That’s about all you need to know.

I love myself a good slice of New York pizza, but the problem comes with how greasy things can get. While there’s no denying that Escape From New York pizza is legit, the level of grease here is just ridiculous. While the potato pizza and its crunchy crust easily steals the show, it’s also a Manhattan Project greasebomb. Definitely a worthy shop for a slice, but it’s also one that should be eaten at sparingly.

Walking in the hood and hungry. There were many restaurants around but we were looking for a quick bite before hitting the bars. I tried the gourmet, pepperoni, veggie, pesto and the potato garlic. A lot, I know. everything was good but the potato and garlic was my fav. Service is super nice, prices are right and food is good.
