The Grand On 5th

I was with a group of friends a week before New Years and we ran into the Grand and i ask the host (chuy)how the drinks were he answers «the drinks are fantastic but the food is amazing» I let him know it was my friends Birthday. He walks us inside and the place was gorgeous so we decided to sit at the bar the bartender was great the food was amazing (mojitos, chorizo burger and truffle fries the best in San Diego) we had an amazing time but what was the most special thing that night was that the host comes out with a delicious chocolate cake for my friends B-​Day and we didn’t have to ask for it and surprisingly it turns out that the host was the Chef. The Grand you guys are great we will be back and thank you Chef and Staff you guys rock!!! :)

The BF took me out on a special date night to the Grand on 5^th and we had such a wonderful experience.
The service was awesome and we were seated in such a fun little booth near the entrance. The posh seating made us feel extra special. The overall vibe of the place is very classy with high ceilings and great chandelier lighting. It’s beautiful, yet almost has a slightly New York Sinatra feel from all the décor.
If you only read one thing from this review: ORDER THE TRUFFLE FRIES! The BF and I are truffle oil obsessed and the truffle fries were the best we’ve had. The truffle flavor was perfect with shaved parm on top. Absolute delicious dipped in their aioli sauce! The BF ordered a chorizo burger with a unique and delicious flavor. I got the fish sandwich. It was a lot of fish and I was only able to eat half of it but it was really good! Love the sweet brioche bun it came on!
I would definitely recommend this place. It didn’t seem too crowded which is a shame cause they’ve got a good thing going on! Hoping more people find this awesome 5^th street gem!

I went on a Saturday night and had a great time! The décor is beautiful and it was a fun crowd. I had the salmon with fresh veggies and it was absolutely delicious, especially the sauce. My friend had the tuna with a sweet, sticky rice and veggies and he loved it too. The service was excellent and the price was really reasonable. I will definitely go again.

The Octopus Appetizer was delicious. We literally dipped and drizzled the butter sauce on just about everything else we ate the night. Cool atmosphere and good drinks.

Come for the drinks! Cool restaurant but the food was a big disappointment. Appetizers were served just below warm, when we highlighted this they were taken back, and heated to slightly warmer then returned, but still not appetizingly hot like you would expect with a meatball. Entrees were forced on us whilst still trying to finish the appetizers, and again served with stone cold sides. Waited for a while to mention it to the waiter, but he was busy, and we feared the food would just receive the same quick reheat so decided to go ahead and eat. Flavors were good but not spectacular. Pretty sure there are better places for food nearby.

This place is empty a lot, but that’s the only issue I have with it. Really like the set up. Staff was quick to make our drinks. We went there on a Saturday so it was partly filled. We were still able to find seating, which is nice. Unfortunately until they’re able to pack the place, we probably won’t be going back.

Perfect place for Monday night football! Great ambiance and amazing staff to match. I ordered the Spinach and Arugula salad and was blown away by the flavor! The salad comes with fresh feta, strawberries, walnuts, and a delicious raspberry vinaigrette. The server was excellent and knowledgable about the menu. I really appreciated the bartender letting me try certain beers I was not familiar with. The manager walked around and took a genuine interest in his guests. This restaurant is a must try if you are ever in the area.

Sunday afternoon stop. Really neat tall old building in Gaslamp. We got thirsty and found our way here. Wasn’t that hard, really. Hit the wings (great), my friend had some sliders and he states they were good. Once again, gone before anyone got a taste. They had super good mixed drinks and we did some Moscow Mules to celebrate the day. Soon, it was night but we had fun. Fancy décor, well dressed people there, good service. Will try dinner there next time.

In the area for a work conference and one of our group decided to pick this place due to the Unilocal reviews. We went there on a Wednesday night around 7 pm
With a table of eight, we were seated immediately as there was only a hand full of diners in the place — not a good sign. They were in two other small groups.
They sat us by the kitchen and I was the one that ended up getting smacked repeatedly by the waiter exiting said kitchen.
The main thing wrong with the place was the food that was cooked by the chef! It was pretty bad.
Pros:
1. Truffle fries and clam chowder
2. Beet salads were good
3. New waitress tried very hard
4. Cool décor
Cons:
1. Burgers burnt on one side
2. Most expensive steak on the menu was tough and could not chew it (coworker)
3. Pastrami ok — but bread not grilled so that was inedible. Ate the Pastrami by itself.
4. Steak sandwich had a problem (coworker)
5. Burnt burger ordered without tomatoes came with them piled on top of burger! (coworker)
We witnessed the chef come out from kitchen and scold the waitress for not dividing up ticket in half. ?? …Said he was confused by getting eight meal orders at once.
Restaurant manager came out and talked to us as we were paying the bill. (paid by the company so we did not make a big deal out of it) Said he had had this conversation about the food quality with the chef before– but it was hard to find good chefs! Said he sympathized with our food problems but didn’t offer anything other than an explanation. (there should be a ton of good chefs in San Diego)
Too many other choices available in the Gaslamp District to bother coming back.

We stumbled on this place as we were leaving another bar (to head home) during the week. We wondered if it was the same owners as Whiskey Grand in North Park. So, we decided to go in and take a look since my friend is a big whiskey drinker. When we went inside, it did not look like it had the same whiskey selection; but, we still asked the bartender. She said it had no affiliation. But, since the place looked cool, we sat down for a drink.
The place was pretty much completely dead on a Thursday night around 9:00pm, which seemed a bit odd. The décor and vibe of this place was super cool. We decided to just sit at the bar to make things easy. We ordered a Moscow Mule and a Strawberry Moonshine Mule — each $ 10. Both drinks were great. They had an entire mule menu, which I liked.
The bartender was super friendly. At one point, she just stood there eating frozen yogurt as she was talking to us (while clearly still on the clock), which I thought was a bit unprofessional. But, I guess she figured it wasn’t a big deal since there were not that many people in the bar. However, we still left her a good tip and I’ll definitely be back here again!

My sister moved to SD, so we went to visit her for the weekend. Our family is very picky and it’s rare that we go to a restaurant and everyone likes their food… The Grand on 5^th met everyone’s expectations (unbelievable).
Lane our server/​bartender provided excellent service! Listen to what he recommends, especially if the menu item is something that you would like or you’re feeling adventurous. Alexander, the manager, was very friendly and personable. He became part of our family for the evening. Not sure who the chef is but he did fantabulous!!! Kudos to the chef!

Fantastic, through and through. Filet was perfect. Rosemary Chicken was perfect. Drinks were perfect. Our server, Tyler, was perfect.
The veggies that came with our meal were some of the best I’ve ever had. I loved my Kimo Sabe Mule, my wife loved her French 75!
The ambiance was great and we really enjoyed our time. Highly recommended.

Stumbled across this place while out walking around. Great date night location. Amazing food appetizers and entrees as well as great service. We were greeted at the door and treated like VIP from the moment we waked in. Great vibe and view of the Gaslamp quarter. We will definitely be back!

Absolutely worth it to try when you are in town!!!

Happy hour alone makes it a must try. The chef here must be from another planet because the food is that out of this world. Brand new place that couldn’t look any more dapper. & the service alone is easily worth 5 stars. Can’t fully decide if i like the food or the cocktails better. But the 20 microbrews on draft make it a safe call for everyone.

When my buddies and I decided to try out The Grand the other night… I was very pleasantly surprised. The place was mostly vacant, but hey, it was the middle of the week. We were also told they were in a soft opening. We looked at the menu and the prices were extremely reasonable. I ended up ordering the chorizo burger, and damnnn was that good!!! They have a nice selection of beers to choose from. And finally, the service was excellent.
I could see myself hanging out here. Check it out.

This place is Great! We came here twice during Comic-​con. Food quality is tops. Service is Tops. Shout out to Kevin and Linda for being awesome warm personality servers.
We had the Superman Burger, Sliders with carmeluzed onions, the Aquaman grilled cajun salmon sandwhich, hot wings with both the spicy thai chili and buffalo sauce. The salad, fries and onion rings are TOPS!!!
Décor is hip. Over 20 beers on TAP!
The lunch specials were $ 14.95 for an entre, side order and bottomless softdrinks.
Wasnt crowded at the least.
This place is an undiscovered Gem.

Excellent adult hang out in the gas lamp district which can be notoriously juvenile. Wonderful décor, great service, excellent high end spirit selection, decent food. If I lived in San Diego, this would become a regular haunt. Stop in and see for yourself.
