Delicious. Had the«pick two» deal. Half a sandwich, and then choose between a ½ soup or salad. I chose the soup, but upgraded to the full bowl of soup. Trust me– the half bowl would’ve been enough… between that and the big half sandwich, I was stuffed. I wanted to try this place for some time. Especially during the colder time of the year. I will be back. No doubt.

Only giving two stars for the clam chowder and bread bowl. The bread bowl was awesome. The chowder was pretty good. The mushroom sandwich, however, gets ZERO stars. My boyfriend and I couldn’t even eat it. Who puts raw portobello mushrooms on a sandwich as the main ingredient? Do people eat that? I think not. I had to spit out the one bite I tried. When we called to ask about the raw mushrooms, they had a snippy attitude about it. Definitely won’t be coming here again. Stick with the bread bowl and soup and you might be okay. But also be prepared to pay WAY more than is reasonable for the quality and amount of food. Two small cups of soup, one bread bowl and the disgusting mushroom sandwich was $ 31. WTF?!

This shop is top notch. The meat they use for their sandwiches are incredible, the soups are made really well!!! I’m not much of a sandwich person, but this place definitely gets me to eat them ;)

Service goes a long way in the restaurant business. You can have a great product but fail when you have bad service. My experience at SD Soup Shoppe was not good. I visited SD Soup Shoppe for the first time on a Saturday afternoon and encountered one of the most blatantly rude workers that I have ever experienced. She was clearly annoyed by our mere presence there and even more so when we asked for suggestions. My mother and sister also felt as if she(the worker) was being hostile towards us. Her rigidness and refusal to be helpful was also noted. After 10 – 15 minutes of waiting for our order I walked up to the counter to check if our order was up and she snapped at me saying, «I told you, when your order is ready, i’ll bring it out to you!’ Wow… she is either having a bad day or they hired the wrong person. In reading some other posts on here I see that this is a pattern. The soup and sandwiches we had were good, but not good enough to come back for bad service and negativity.

The hubs and I came here on a rainy day for lunch. I thought the sandwiches and soup were good however the place was very small. Upside, there’s a brewery next door you can take you food.

No service with a smile? Yet I don’t think they’re gonna change their plating peeps. Shouldn’t be too big of a deal but then again, we are paying about $ 7+tax. Soup was good as usual and came out fast. Just bummed that they(«soup» shoppe) haven’t expanded their soup options like adding French onion, broccoli cheddar, & chicken noodle. Would’ve been my go to spot if I had not quickly read the negative reviews(the reviews people mostly read) while waiting for my soup. Out of all people, the owners have bad service?! I’m reading this from plenty of negative ones and I’m disgusted. Your workers should be the ones getting the bad reviews for bad service, not you guys! Especially when you’re not around.(Cats come out to play.)You find out who, then you warn or fire them! In this case, obviously somebody doesn’t care anymore. So, I’ll just fire myself as their about-to-be loyal customer & run back to Boudin & Panera whom have been waiting for me to come back to them with open arms.(At least there, the owners are NEVER on site.) Sad to hear that the owners themselves are the ones giving bad service. Taking my soup craving elsewhere so that I’ll NEVER have to go through what those unfortunate PAYING customers went through.

Wow. So fresh and delicious! This will definitely make it on our regular lunch rotation. Best lobster bisque I’ve ever had.

Sandwich good, girl who is front of house… needs to go to back of house or find a different profession. So unfriendly and has an attitude of annoyance at simple questions regarding her favorite item or if the menu changes bc they use seasonal ingredients. These are fun questions involving the food and my interest in it. We’re never coming back bc of her attitude… customer service is just as important as the product. You’ll either learn that before it’s too late, when the place goes under bc customers don’t come back, or never at all and continue to blame everyone else for your failures. I hate to say this, but I don’t wish you the best of luck and have plenty of other great food served by great people who I’d rather support. This seems harsh, but she was truly awful… especially for a co owner/operator.

If this place can’t count on their outside seating, they’re in trouble. We showed up, on a really rainy day, which made it so the inside was kind of swampy, and the patio unavailable which forced the shop to make all of their orders to go. Even with that experience Oh My God is their food good. Great soup and sandwiches combinations! So delicious! I was in between items, I made a great selection but I am sure if I had gotten the other option I would have been as happy. Definitely returning to try out the rest of their menu!

I came here with my family yesterday afternoon for lunch. When we got there, there was no one in the shop. A girl greeted us at the counter and asked to take our order. My fiancé noticed all the sandwiches were hot, so I asked the girl if they could serve us the sandwich cold. She said no as the bread needs to be heated. That’s probably because it’s old and stale, people. Already not a good sign. He ordered a Caesar salad. His dad wanted a bowl of clam chowder, and his mom ordered the roast beef sandwich. She asked for no sauce, onion or arugula. She asked what kind of bread it came on and the girl basically lost it and told us they have a no substitutions policy. Ok fine… That’s when we realized there were no kid friendly options. I suggested we could run across the way to grab something for him at sonic. When she heard me suggest that, she ripped up the order slip and crumpled it up in her hands and disappeared into the kitchen. What the actual fuck? We left so angry and disappointed. I’m never coming back and I’m going to let everyone know on every social media outlet I can get my hands on what kind of service they provide. Was it because I came in with my parents and stepson that I was treated this way? I stalked their Instagram and it looks like the girl who took our order is the owners gf or wife or whatever… good luck, bro.

Looking for panini with amazing flavor? Come here! I’ve had the Turkey cheddar with blueberry preserves and the Pastrami Swiss. The pastrami Swiss is so flavorful that I was afraid I’d regret ordering anything else. YET the turkey was even better!!! Perfectly grilled sourdough, right amount of turkey, gooey melted cheddar(NOT greasy) with the blueberry was fantastic! A nice change from the usual cranberry. Salads and soups are good here too – get a combo if you can’t decide! Small parking lot in the back! Husband and wife owned. This isn’t fast food – it’s made with care, so sit and relax!

Amazballs hole in the wall! I would give this place and the business next door(You can walk back and forth between the two places of business.) a strong 4.5 stars. I would give them both an actual 5 star if they had better A/C. I don’t give any place a true 5 star that doesn’t have it. Anyway it’s San Diego, and the weather is awesome and so are the sandwiches! They are really good and unique, I think I liked my guests sandwich a little better. But mine was still great, I’ll post a picture :) This place is extremely small but you can eat next door, and drink wonderful beers there as well. It’s really cool to see small businesses working together! It’s worth driving to in my opinion. It’s not upscale interior wise but it pulls off a cool relaxed vibe. Definitely my kinda place! Thank you Unilocal for yet again helping me find yet another gem, and if you haven’t guessed by now I will be back, and I recommend it! See you there, happy eating!

Good soup, but served in disposable plastic bowls. This place has some good sandwich recipes, but they just need to put some effort into the preparation… putting a sandwich into a presser shows little imagination and vitality. Why not have ceramic, plastic, or metal bowls? Higher quality bowls don’t cost very much, and they would go a long way to bring up the classiness level. Are they afraid someone will walk out with their bowls? My prosciutto caprese panini was decent, but the fact that they only serve panini sandwiches show’s me the laziness of their restaurant concept. Also, the feel of the restaurant is pretty nice inside, and outside they have a wooden deck and tables with umbrellas.

Oh San Diego Soup Shoppe, why did I wait so long to finally try you!!! Yes you’re located in a weird area. Yes you have limited hours. But that is no excuse. This place rocks! Over the years I’ve discovered that restaurants with smaller menus often have have better food and San Diego Soup Shoppe is no exception. Their selection of five daily made-from-scratch soups is perfect. I had the roasted red pepper and gouda and can easily say it’s some of the best soup I’ve ever had. A rich red soup with just the right amount of creaminess, I could eat an entire gallon of it and still go back for more(or rather waddle back for more). My friend’s mushroom and brie was equally as appetizing. The shoppe also offers a selection of eight panini. I’m usually not a big fan of panini and think they’re kind of greasy and bland, but the albacore tuna melt with dill and lemon was spot on. The addition of dill and lemon really made the tuna salad pop while the swiss cheese, roma tomato, red onion and spinach added more texture to the sandwich. While the shop is small, seating is available next door at Barn Brewing company. No need to wait for your sandwich either, they’ll deliver your order there! Having a beer(or flight) only adds to the experience. Lastly, do yourself a favor and get the half sandwich and soup combo. That way you can have the best of both worlds!

Checked this placed out last week for lunch after wanting to go there for months, and it was definitely worth it. I love that for lunch they have a half sandwich/soup combination that you can choose from the different options for the day. I selected a delicious brie/mushroom soup with the turkey cheddar panini that came with a blueberry spread. I was surprised how well the blueberry spread worked with the sandwich! Even better was that they deliver your order to the new Barn Brewery next door, so you can have an afternoon beer with your meal! My only drawbacks are that they do not allow substitutions on the sandwiches, which is a bit frustrating if you have food allergies, and the credit card fee is passed to you as the patron for orders under $ 10. Overall, I will definitely be heading back in there soon for a bit and a beer next door!

Your know you’re in for a treat when you can hear the lady ACROSS the patio take that first crunchy bite of her panini! The sandwiches here are soooo good! I love that the bread stays crunchy from begining to end. The last bite was just as sexy, crispy, and delicious as the first! We split the pesto chicken which had great flavor, gooey cheese, and bacon– Need I say more? & The pastrami melt… i love mustard and pastrami so that was an easy sell. Both were awesome and we loved them equally! Two sandwiches and 2 bags of chips came to $ 22 fairly priced in my book! Will be back soon!

I want to so badly, but I can’t give them a five-star review just yet. That’s only because I’ve only eaten here once and I generally don’t max out the stars until I’ve received a few great meals from a place. BUT the meal I did have here was fantastic. I was sick for almost three weeks with some ridiculous cold that wouldn’t go away. My throat hurt and chewing was exhausting so I became obsessed with soup. After three weeks of being home and eating soup constantly, we decided to go out for lunch on the first day I felt better. What did I want to eat? Well still soup obviously because soup is awesome! We’d driven by this place several times, but could never manage to get there during their sort of strange business hours. Also my husband doesn’t like soup because«NOTENOUGHMEAT.» Ugh. Anyway, I leveraged my weakness from a long illness to talk him into taking me for soup. We arrived on a Saturday around 2PM and parking wasn’t a problem at all and there were plenty of tables available. We sat on the patio and I want to note a couple things about it: 1. The patio is much larger and nicer than you’ll expect it to be. It’s clean and comfortable. 2. It’s also almost totally shaded. Thank you, Soup Shoppe! Why don’t more establishments in San Diego use those sun shades?! Not all of us like baking in the sun while we eat. 3. No pets allowed. I was a little surprised to see that since so many restaurants in North Park are pet friendly, but that’s totally fine and I understand. The patio is spotless and maybe it’s a pain in the butt to clean«accidents» since it’s more like an elevated deck. Regardless, pet-owners take note before you show up hungry with your dog. I ordered the lobster bisque and my husband had the lunch special with half a sandwich and soup. I honestly don’t remember what sandwich he had because I was way too excited about my upcoming lobster bisque to listen to what he was saying. If they have a chicken pesto sandwich it was probably that because that’s his go-to. I do know he liked it, though, so you’re welcome for that insightful review. BUTMYSOUPWASGREAT. And we know that’s all that really matters. I used to be obsessed with the lobster bisque from Robin’s in Cambria(Note: I just looked it up and it’s actually a salmon bisque, but whatever), however now I’m 100% obsessed with the lobster bisque from San Diego Soup Shoppe. Their bisque was light, but also creamy and filling. That plus the delicious sourdough roll that came on the side made the perfect lunch and kept me full. I can’t wait to come back again and try each of their soups. Soup is so good. I love being able to consume food without the extra energy of chewing it. *winks* *puts on sunglasses* *walks away like a badass*

Turkey and cheddar with wild blueberry preserve has brought so much happiness to me. I had driven by SDSS plenty of times and finally made it inside. Cute little place. Right when you walk in, there is a couple of tables sort of crammed in, but a second door lets you walk to the side of the shop for outside seating. We live in San Diego! Who doesn’t love outside seating? I hadn’t paid much attention to this place before, ahhh so much wasted time. I ordered the sandwich/soup combo. The waitress quickly suggested the turkey & cheddar w/blueberry preserves sandwich and let me know, and I quote … «We got this award over here(*points to her right*) thanks to this sandwich.» And so, how could I not order it?! Maybe the best turkey sandwich ever. I was secretly scared that i would hate the blueberry, but it wasn’t overpowering and just added a nice zing. As for the soup, I went for clam chowder. It was a good soup, I ate it all. I will be coming back. Over and over. I should try other things on their menu, but I’m not sure if I’m ready yet.

Once upon a time my plans went astray and I ended up here to make a long story short. I was craving a grilled cheese, but not being on the menu, made me worry a bit. However, the young gent told me that it was not a problem to whip, so I went ahead and ordered a half with some of their Roasted Red Pepper and Gouda made from a tomato base for $ 8 and some change as a lunch special( ). Both were great. The soup had a great viscosity, a bisque like with excellent creaminess. The touch of Gouda was mild and slightly noticeable, and I especially loved the partially melted morsels they put into the soup( ). A great soup and excellent twist on a tomato soup. The grilled cheese was bliss. I was not sure how many cheeses it came with, but it was more than one for sure, and they were all great. Not only did they taste great, but they had the perfect melted temp and they gooey-ness we have become to love( ). The bread was nicely toasted and provided a great crunch, hence a great texture. Next time, I will be ordering a whole grilled cheese… Nice people… with some great eats.
