Wife and I were in San Diego and decided to go the Gas Lamp district for dinner. It was Friday Night and we thought some Mediterranean Food would be good. I should have turned away because a restaurant on a Friday Night that has no one inside is a bad sign. We were shown seats right away and looked over the menu. The options here are small, I would say about a dozen entrees all with a Mediterranean feel to it. Prices here are reasonable, you’re looking between $ 15 — $ 25. The wife and I got a salad to split along and I got the Chicken and she got the vegetarian dish. First out came the salad and it was a warm caprese salad. A little bit different but not bad. They stacked the salad with small balls of mozzarella cheese, whole olives, and freshly grilled cherry tomatoes. Flavor wise it was good, but I have to say they put way too much oil in it. The bottom of the bowl was dripping in oil. Next up came our meals. My chicken with the sun-dried tomatoes was an ok meal. Portion size here was huge though including a lot of grilled veggies and two large pieces of chicken breast. They did over cook the chicken and added too much salt to it. I just couldn’t stop drinking water the whole time. My wife’s dish was interesting, the grilled vegetables were decent but they also gave her french fries. I can understand if they gave her pita bread or even naan, but french fries… it kind of threw us both for a loop. The one thing I have to say is their portion size are huge. Easily can be split by two people. Since we were the only eating here, service was friendly and attentive. Maybe a bit too attentive. As to rating, the atmosphere here is nice and would make for a good date spot, just wished the food was better, so I would give Port Café a 2.5 rating. For Unilocal purposes, since ‘I’ve had better Mediterranean food that I’ve given 3 stars to, to be fair, I’ll round down to 2. Lots of potential decent flavoring, but too many minor slip ups. If Port Café can clean those issues up, I can see it being a decent Mediterranean spot but for now, 2 stars.
