In a word– outstanding. The plates are simple but the flavors are specific and full. To be fair, I have only had the carnitas plate(twice because it’s so dang good) but the people that I go with have gotten the soups and rolled tacos and carne asada, etc… all of it is very authentic and fantasticly prepared. It seems that every time I have gone there, the plates are prepared with the exact amount of ingredients to make a proper meal(their plates come separated and you have to assemble the tacos yourself). I love that noone knows about this place, and frankly, am surprised that they stay in business, considering the fact that there is never anyone in there when I go. I am happy to keep this place to myself, but on the other hand, am happy to tell you all about it. Hopefully we can generate some buzz on this place. They deserve it. Like I said, it VERY authentic, handmade, delicious and small. If you’re in the Barrio, seek this place out. Quatros Milipas always has a crazy line, so if you’re looking for alternatives, this is a STRONG candidate! And bring cash.

This a very nice little place with and even nicer lady that runs and cooks as well. I stopped in and had their Saturday special which included four beef rolled tacos with avocado and Cotija cheese and a side of Mexican rice and re-fried beans for only $ 3.99( ). The rolled tacos were very good and Ioved that she put fresh sliced avocados and grated Cotija cheese on top( ). Very traditional. The rolled tacos had a good amount of of moist beef inside the rolls and the rolls themselves had a nice light crunch and mild chewiness to them that I really enjoyed. The rolled tacos were great with the house hot sauce( ). It had a good kick, but I was more impressed with its great robust flavor with it burnt chile de arbol pepppers. The rice was nice and fluffy and lightly seasoned, and the re-fried beans had that good flavor that reminded me of the old fashion beans re-fried in lard or manteca. I’m not sure if they were, but they tasted good( ). You got to love that salty Cotija cheese on top, because so many people do use it as much anymore. They offer daily specials that are on the wall poster, and daily cuisine that is not on the menu; for instance, on Monday’s they offer a braised pork ribs in chile verde.

If you drove by this little tortilleria in Barrio Logan, nine out of ten you’d miss it. With enough room for 2 tables, «La Popu» is operated by a nice lady named Blanca with the help of her friend Ana. On most mornings, people from all over pick up their orders for freshly made flour tortillas and tortilla chips. Alternatively, Blanca serves up some very reasonably priced Mexican food that is easily on par with the rest of them. One of the best parts of this joint is the«secret menu» consisting of some home cooking reserved for family and friends of La Popu: .

Cinco Estrellas… so here’s how it all goes down: I grew up in SD. My mom loves Cuatro Milpas so I had to listen to her B.S. growing up about how great it was blah, blah, blah. I think it’s totally overrated but that’s a different story. Strike that, overrated my ass… it’s crap on a plate. Someone somewhere told me «F*@% Cuatro Milpas and go around the corner to El Porvenir.» So I did and their tortillas were amazing. But they went out of biz once the kids took over and ran it into the ground. Meanwhile I am at Café Moto one day(and I go to Café Moto cuz someone who knows more than I do said, «F@*& Ryan Bros and go to Café Moto») and asked where can get great tortillas now that Porvenir was gone. A lady in there told me to go to La Popular. Their tortillas are ok– totally worth the drive from my place downtown. But it was the Wednesday Tamale Special that freaked me out. First of all it’s Tamales. Secondly it’s Rice and Beans on the side. Thirdly, it’s like, $ 3.25. WTF??? I was figuring for the price the tamales would blow and have like a teaspoon of crappy-ass meat but NO. These tamales were awesome.

Melissa M. doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She probably favors Taco Bell. This is a family owned business and the value(taste to price ratio) is fantastic. We ate here nearly every day for 3 years. The food here is made with fresh ingredients and it shows. A normally greasy burrito, such as a carne asada, doesn’t drip lard all over the place like the other cheap mexican places around town. The recipes and methods here are Mexican Food for the Future although the mom and pop nature of the establishment likely precludes any sort of expansion into the culture at large. Best Mexican place in San Diego. Yum.

I love this place. We don’t make it here very often because it’s not really close to where we live, but make the special trip fairly often. The carne asada tacos are a good choice — the corn tortillas they come housed really make them fabulous. The chicken tacos are good too, the cheese that they put on them is so flavorful! They sell chips and tortillas(both fabulous) though the chips go stale pretty quick. Service is fast, friendly, and everything is very reasonably priced.

this is a small, quaint two-table family business tucked into the residential barrio logan. my friend swears by this place and claims that he and his crew help keep the place in business. they order all the carne asada/meaty stuff that i don’t partake in. after reviewing the menu over and over, i ordered 2 fish tacos — «sorry, no fish tacos.» so. i ordered two pollo tacos. they came with cheese and salsa and the chicken was stewed to perfection. the tortillas were slightly fried and the ends pursed together like an uncommitted gordita. the accoutrementing salsa was delicious; overall it was enjoyable(tacos $ 1.50 ea. and the size of street tacos). I would love more non-meat choices and yet, i understand their clientel probably propels them to serve what they serve. they have a pretty standard menu with tacos, burritos and combo plates. they also have soda and juices in a cooler, chips and other snacks, including doublemint gum! *on a side note, the food didn’t stay with me too long and that is what caused pause for more stars and more ventures there to expand my review.
