At first I thought this place is a Chinese bakery but when I bought some hopia baboy and asked the server she said that it’s actually a Filipino bakery. No wonder so many Asians are buying here. Most customers I saw are Asian but I was so confused as they looked the same to me. I bought 15 pcs mixed of hopia baboy, ube and mongo. I liked mongo the best as it taste like sweet mashed red beans that starbucks has as a topping for green tea frappé. Overall the best Asian bakery I’ve been to. Will definitely try the sticky rice desserts when I come back!

I’m surprised that there aren’t more reviews for this establishment. I know it’s quite popular amongst the Asian community, Filipinos especially of course. I was first introduced to Julie’s Desserts & Bakery in 2005. I LOOOOVVVEEE the hopias here! I always walk away with at least a dozen each of the ube & pandan flavored ones… a bargain at 3 for $ 1! Another favorite here are the bibingkas. Made with rice flour & coconut milk & baked in banana leaf, this version is the best I’ve ever had. Unfortunately for me, I came too early today and there were none to be had :(. But no worries, I will be back!

Tucked inside a little Vietnamese mall is Julie’s Bakery. I first experienced her baked goods at a swap meet in La Puente in the form of these fried rice balls. They didn’t seem like a big deal at first, being only 2 bucks, but when we tried them, man we were hooked! So much so that we looked up directions on how to get to this place, which resides in San Diego, a 2 hour drive, if we were to go. Fast forward a year and we take a San Diego trip and we find this placed tucked inside a small strip mall, within a grocery store. Everything here is simply great. The fried rice balls, the little hoopa cookies(the colorful cookies with so much flavor. I think that’s how to spell it…), a white little treat that tastes a little like dough but sweet(they sold tis by the ton it seems, I forgot the name), and my personal favorite, the bread with mixed in fruit, almost like a marble. So delicious that we’ll be stopping by every chance we get to visit SD. P. S. If you take a trip down here yourself and want a fun way back to the freeways, with less traffic, and great scenery? Take the 52 back to the 5, you wont regret it.
