I have been a patient of Dr. Selby for over 10 years, and I can tell you I have always been treated with incredible respect kindness. The secretary is amazing and so sweet. if you don’t have insurance and you need to be seen Dr. Selby; his folks will take care of you.

Thanks Unilocalers for introducing me to Dr Selby. Spent a lot of time with me, and educated me on what’s happening to my eyes in my mid-40s. His location is in a unremarkable strip shopping center on Miramar Rd, but don’t let that distract from the excellent service and reasonable prices. Best eye doc I’ve encountered! I can’t recommend a business to fellow Unilocalers more highly…

i called for an initial appointment and got in quickly. i checked into Unilocal and received $ 10 off my contact lens exam which was originally $ 109 due to my astigmatism. Dr. Selby is more than willing to do whatever it takes to help get your prescription as fit as possible and I greatly appreciate that 100%. I have never had a doctor that actually wanted to know what was wrong with my vision, it was always«yeah, your eyes are pretty bad». my initial appointment was kind of a let down, I came out with contacts that didn’t clear my vision or make it any better. i actually walked out with a contact that was –5.50 in my right eye when its usually a –3.50. Dr. Selby was being honest that he wanted me to come back for a follow up because he wasn’t completely confident that it was going to be the right prescription for me. the nice receptionist told me that follow ups are free for the next 3 months and that includes any trials that i may need as well. i finally came back for my follow up today and i have never seen the world more clearly!!! we came up with a prescription that helped me see almost 20⁄20 which has never happened before in my life. what happened when i came in last time was that something was going on with my eye and i just could not see anything so it was just stuck at a disastrous point. definitely recommend Dr. Selby! it was a great and friendly experience and i’m so glad that i have eyeballs that finally work now!

Dr. Selby is the best optometrist I’ve ever seen. I have seen many other optometrists, some with special awards, but only doctor Selby could figure out that I had accommodative infacility. He is special as a doctor because he goes further than just what he was taught in school; he actually makes effort to fully understand what you are seeing. He spends time with you and is a genuinely compassionate and friendly person. He keeps his rates low so that people that are financially struggling(students, elderly, low income, disabled, etc) can afford to see him. Staff is very nice as well and I recommend Dr. Selby’s office to anyone.

Unfortunately the air optix colors that the doctor and receptionist raved about didn’t work out for me… They only gave me a trial of my previous lenses and should have given me a trial of the air optix clear ones since they knew I had never tried that brand(the colors don’t come prescribed for trials.) I ordered the air optix colors, which were 2x the price of my old coopervision expressions and they gave my eyes extreme light sensitivity and it was awful. My eyes felt so strained. I called the receptionist and told her what happened and she emailed me a prescription of my former contact lenses. All is well but there goes $ 84 down the drain since Walgreens wouldn’t return it because they stated that«the doctor approved it and should have known» ok.

Dr. Selby is wonderful! He is not only a great eye doctor, but a lovely person. My children adore him and can’t wait to go back. His staff is also really nice and not pushy. There was no pressure to buy glasses from him. I did buy my daughter’s contacts from him because they were reasonably priced and I like supporting local business.

Dr. Selby and staff are so friendly! I would recommend him as your optometrist! You can tell he is a people person. It looks like he loves what he is doing and is very knowledgeable. He takes the time to explain to you about your eyes in a way where you will understand.

Are you wondering why he has 5 stars? It’s because Dr. Selby is awesome. He’s the only optometrist that takes the time to actually have a conversation with you. I’ve gone to Dr. Shelby before I had vision insurance and his prices are reasonable, he’s friendly, and from what I can tell actually likes his job. He’s even given advice as to where I can get LASIK, which would make him lose me as a customer for contacts, but he knows what he’s talking about and I’m glad I found him.

Dr. Selby is wonderful. He is start, kind and always willing to take time and help his patients. I needed new contacts, but it took a lot of time to get the fit correct. Dr. Shelby was generous and thoughtful with all the follow-up visits. I have recommended his to many of my friends and family. The office staff is terrific! I don’t know who is luckier, Dr. Selby for having a great staff or the staff working for a great doctor.

Amazing top notch service! I went in just to get more contacts and a pair of glasses. The receptionist was super attentive! She spent 20 minutes helping me find a pair of glasses that best fits my face(other places would just leave you alone after 5 minutes). She explained everything thoroughly and took time to answer all of my questions including tips on how to keep my glasses and contacts clean. She was genuinely into her job and it shows!

Absolutely the best optometrist in San Diego! Have been seeing Dr. Selby since 1999. He truly cares about his patients. Very easy to schedule an appointment. Performs a very thorough eye exam. Can’t say enough good things. High recommend!

Always a pleasure to visit Dr. Selby and get my eyes checked out. He’s very helpful and insightful when it comes to getting the best prescription for my needs. He talked me out of a higher power for my contacts since I do a lot of work on the computer(so I wouldn’t strain my eyes). The opticians in the office are also top notch. They were able to replace a set of frames that broke on me that were just slightly out of warranty– at no cost. A+

I found Dr. Selby in 2001, randomly. I have been with him since. He is such a nice guy– engages you in conversation and has genuine interest in you. His prices are great. And I love going to a local, private practice. There is absolutely no up-sell, no pressure, just gets you what you need all with a great big smile on his face. I truly think he is one of the best — not just optometrist, but one of the best businesses in San Diego. I would and do recommend people to see him. Also, to the wonderful woman who runs his front office, she is great also– always calls as soon as my contacts arrive, always pleasant… I really cannot ask for more. Love, Love, Love it

Best Value, If I didn’t have VSP at work and live 4 hrs away I’d have gone here. I think next time I’ll pass up the place I went this year and just go back, Better Value/Service saves you more than VSP Covered Place that screws you over.

My contact lens exam was on Dec 16th, and I’m writing this review almost over a month later because they deserve the review. First of all, I have been seeing eye doctors for the last 20 years and have never felt more comfortable. Not only did the doctor spend extra time making sure I was receiving the right prescription, she explained to me what the tests were for and what she was looking for(when checking my cornea utilizing the typical tests). I was very impressed by the quality of care, the information, and customer service. I will be utilizing them from here on out! :)

If I said that Dr. Shelby and his office staff are wonderful, informative, caring, sweet, fun, thorough, easy going, efficient, and personable… would that persuade you to get your next eye exam from them? No… Why? More concerned about the cost, huh? Okay then. $ 55 for eye glass exam *$ 84 for regular contact exam *$ 99 for any other special needs eyeballs exam, like gas permeable or toric *free trial lenses And follow up visit included How bout now? No, not yet, you little tightwad. I gotcha. I hear ya… I’m with ya… But how about throwing in $ 10 off any exam with that awesome Unilocal check-in! Cha-ching, right?! Now go on and get your eyeballs checked out by these peeps! 5 star average on 54 Unilocal reviews is no fluke, either.

Review is long overdue! I’ve been coming here for a couple of years now after discovering him on the SD Reader. It’s hard to find a good optometrist and especially one with good rates! Dr. Shelby is honest and great to work with! I live about 30 mins away but I am willing to drive for his service! He’s prices are the best around! He’s comparable to costco for most cases! Unfortunately my eyes are beyond bad so contacts are way cheaper at costco! Too bad he couldn’t price match! He’s also out of the VSP network so I get a cut from benefits but it’s well worth it!

As a young girl I was often tortured by my brothers on a regular basis. This included the usual wedgie, purple-nurple or holding me down while they tried to touch their tongues to my eyes. My past optometry experiences are right in line with being held down and having my eyeballs threatened with unfamiliar objects. I may never know how a burst of air into my eye will test for glaucoma, but I can tell you I will not be able to sit sill long enough to let you get that tool near my eye. With my high propensity to blink myself into a seizure I was hesitant to try contacts. I can barely wear barely wear glasses without flinching let alone place a contact on my eye. However, I just got a motorcycle and I just knew I couldn’t be caught wearing glasses under a helmet. Helmets are already hard enough to squeeze over my brain, that I didn’t want to have to fuss with glasses on top of that. I knew that it was time for a change. My eyes haven’t quite settled enough to commit to lazering my eyes(Plus that is 1000% scarier) so I decided to start looking around for an Doctor to hook me up with some contacts. I searched Unilocal first since I don’t have any medical coverage for optical and I didn’t just want to be another number rushed through at Costco. The glowing reviews led me to Dr. Selby’s office and I made the call hesitantly while recalling my past optometry experiences. Luckily, the appointment was easily made for the next day, and on a Saturday so I wouldn’t have to miss work! My past couple visits had all been at Kaiser through my previous insurance so it was nice to be greeted by actual people and not robot nurses. There was a young girl inside about 11 years old and her mom who had just both had an exam and was getting a refill on their contacts. As they left Dr. Selby came out wearing a Hawaiian shirt and I knew we’d got along well. He is very friendly and easy to chat with which helped calm my nerves(no matter how irrational they may be) I explained to him my fear of touching my eye balls and we began the exam. The exam was easy, so long as you know your alphabet and nothing ever came near my eyeballs! After checking my vision and comparing them to my previous prescription he grabbed a pair of contacts for me to test out. It took me nearly 20 minutes to get the first of the contacts into my eye as I sat in front of the mirror nervously peeling back my eye lids while staring into my own reflection. As I fiddled with the contact I just kept thinking about the 11 year old up front. According to the Doctor, she had been doing this since she was seven. Certainly my 20+ years on the girl shouldn’t make it any harder for me I thought as I poked myself in the eye again. Finally I got the second one in and things were great. Until they told me I couldn’t leave until I could take one out and put it back in… fast forward another 20 minutes. It turns out you can’t hire people to put them in for you each day, and sleeping in them is also against the rules. Don’t worry, I already asked. I was not looking forward to trying this again later, but the Doctor assured, it would get easier with time. They were very patient with my millions of questions and the time it took for me to suffer through my first contact experience and I’m thankful for that. If I had been rushed, I might never have followed through with the contacts! The first visit included a trial pair for me to test out, a bit of solution and a case for the glasses as well as a follow up visit a week later to make sure there weren’t any creepy things growing out of my eyes. The follow up visit was quick, I bought some contacts now that it didn’t take 20 minutes to put each one in and take them out and I was on my way. I honestly say, I look forward to my exam next year. The office was extremely friendly, no horrible waiting periods and considering I don’t have coverage, extremely affordable. I hope Dr. Selby isn’t planning on retiring before I build up the courage for Lasik! I’d highly recommend this office if you’re in the need of a new optometrist!
