You know, this is exactly the kind of restaurant that Fort Sam Houston needs in abundance. Good food, cheap, and relatively non-generic. It’s too bad that this store is so overshadowed by its neighbor, Burger King. When you walk into the area, you can clearly see the large Burger King logo displayed prominently. But to the right of it is Mr Gyros, a small restaurant that easily gets forgotten because of how difficult it is to notice next to Burger King. But don’t be fooled; this place is better than either the Burger King or Domino’s Pizza nearby. I ordered a gyro plate and hot dog here. Thinking it would take a while for the staff to prepare the food, I quickly made my way over to the Burger King line to order a milk shake because they didn’t have such drinks at Mr Gyros. But the guy behind the counter actually waved at me and pointed out that my food was ready while I was still waiting in the Burger King line. I hadn’t expected it to be done so fast. But as soon as I got my shake, I picked up my food on the other side. Portions are decent for what I paid. I was also quite pleased with the food, although I cannot attest to its authenticity. The gyro plate consisted of meat, lettuce, and tomato covered with sauce in a Styrofoam to-go box. The hot dog was interesting; it was a sausage with cheese, onions, and tomatoes wrapped up like a falafel. Overall, the food was all right and didn’t make me feel worried about clogging up my arteries as much as most of the other restaurants around here do. This may be the best non-DFAC food on base, but it is heavily underappreciated.
