Again i found this little place on Unilocal. Thanks to a recent review. i had seen this place while trying to find Alamo Street Eats, FYI it’s like a block and a half away. Cool huh! When i saw Cakery. i immediately thought… maybe wedding cakes… not cupcakes. That’s way i never really went to check it out. The street that the bakery is located on a one way street with little to no parking and no parking lot. So you’ll have to do like me and hike a a couple blocks. Then when you get to the bakery go up steep stairs. Upon arrival i was greeted by one of the twin sisters that own the bakery. She was very nice and informative. She let me sample the cupcakes of the day. I told her i was there to try the Mexican Vanilla or chocolate cupcake. She said they post the daily flavors on Facebook and twitter. The day i went(Friday) was not a Mexican chocolate day. So i opted for the Peach Jalapeño and the carrot cake. I’ll have you know. i bought the cupcakes on Friday midday 3pm. i had a very busy weekend and didn’t get to eat the carrot cake until Monday midday. That cupcake was still Awesome. Tasted like I had just sampled it in the bakery. i kept it in the box it came in, so maybe that helped. I have no idea how long to keep cupcakes, but it was still moist. I will be on the look out for the Mexican chocolate most definitely.

The Mexican vanilla cupcake is a must! After trying some cupcakes from Carlton that Attaboy’s was serving up and loving them. I began my search to find the shop and experience all the cupcake indulgence I could! Didn’t have to search far. It’s about a two minute walking trek from Alamo Street Eats. Going towards Chavez you’re going to take a quick right, right before the light on Alamo and Chavez onto Martinez. You can’t miss it after that. A cute blue and white house turned bakery. So FYI Carlton is run by two twin sisters. I’m not sure which one greeted me on my visit but she was just as sweet as the cupcakes they make. They had samples of all the cupcakes they had for the day. Cupcake flavors change daily so like/follow/stalk on your favorite social site to keep up with them. 3 $ cupcakes not a bad price I thought and quickly choose 4 of two flavors. Mexican vanilla and peanut butter cup! Oh the Mexican vanilla cupcake is making my mouth water just thinking about it. So as I’ve reviewed other cupcakes/cake joints I’ve made it known I’m not a fan of overdone icing. These cupcakes however were perfectly butter cream iced to give just the extra kick of complementary flavors. The cake itself was one of the best I’ve ever had. Hints of cinnamon or some kind of spice complemented the vanilla in the best way possible. Moist, flavorful, not your regular vanilla cupcake. You really have to try it! There is no way I can do it justice. So my intention was to take the peanut butter cup cupcakes for my husband and well he had some: 0D A two toned chocolate cupcake that looked exactly like a peanut butter cup as you bit into it topped off with peanut butter, butter cream icing and well peanut butter cups. How can you go wrong with that chocolaty indulgence? You can’t! So if your in need to satisfy your sugary cravings head to Carlton Cakery!

My name is Ash and I’m an admitted cupcake snob. I will be the first one to admit, I am damn near impossible to please when it comes to them. Certain criteria must be met to even garner a three stars outta me. Imagine my surprise when I was blown away by a single cupcake that was sold out of a Tupperware at Attaboy’s truck at Alamo Street Eat Bar. Looking to satisfy my sweet tooth, I saw Attaboy had some Carlton Cakery cupcakes for sale up front at $ 3 a piece. A little pricey but not the most I’ve ever spent on one. Chose the Caramel Apple flavor and sat down to scrutinize the confection. It passed the visual test, had a nice icing-to-cake ratio which is a mayjah pet peeve of mine. Peeled back the paper and took my first bite. Have you seen Ratatouille? Where Anton Ego takes a bite of the dish and is instantly transported to his childhood? Yea, I had one of those moments. The cake was dense and had bits of apple throughout, check. The icing was tasty, fresh and infused with caramel flavor, check check check. After I was done, I kinda sat back and felt satisfied. I’m heading to the Cakery soon to find out if any other flavors have this effect on me and will report back!

I did not go into the shop but it is a nice white house just off the main drag of Alamo St. I run by in the mornings. An unfortunate circumstance yielded us 11 cupcakes from this bakery. This is not coloring the review because I was jazzed about getting to try a new cupcake location even if it was due to the misfortune of a friend. After the dust cleared from the fiasco, I tried a couple flavors – angel food mixed berry and triple chocolate. Neither was particularly impressive. The frosting was sweet, but didn’t bring anything interesting or enhancing to the party. The cake was just average in flavor and not quite moist enough in the case of the chocolate one – they weren’t dry either though. The cupcake size was average cupcake mold sized and the frosting to cake ratio was off – in this case I’d want more frosting. Not a ton, but a little more, especially if it had a more cake-enhancing flavor and consistency. I checked the website and their menu has some fun sounding flavors so maybe there is something I might like more than these. As huge a fan of cupcakes as I am, I honestly think there are places you could take the $ 3 each these cost and have a more satisfying experience based on the couple I have tried so far. Will update as I try more :)
