They pour a seriously stiff drink! No really this place is super casual and in my experience always welcoming. Food is decent, take your servers advice on what’s good, when I stray I pay… They have an upstairs room with a bar for private parties, I’ve seen it but haven’t ever used it. Looks like a good option for the neighborhood. O and the parking lot ur supposed to park in is the one on the east side of the building.

A nice neighborhood bar. Staff is friendly and responsive, and the food is often quite good. Not a large beer selection, but they have monthly specials. I like the breakfasts.

The burgers are excellent, good tap selection, good service. Eat in the bar or the quiet dining area. Nice neighborhood spot.

The lunch special on TH was meatloaf. Got a huge portion with mashed potatoes and a very good gravy, vegetable and roll. $ 8. Can’t beat it. It was good.

Anytime there’s broasted chicken, I’m on board. Trying to decide where to go for lunch with a friend– we wound up here. Not bad. Nice atmosphere with plenty of booths. I ordered the club sandwich was pretty good. A little awkward to try and eat, but most clubs are they way they are layered. Option of white or wheat bread. Plenty of ingredients inside served with fries. My friend ordered a cheeseburger with tator tots. Tator tots looked good and were confirmed to be good. I ordered a 4 piece white meat broasted chicken to go that also came with a hearty helping of fries. Broasted chicken was amazingly good. I had a small preview and taste preview. Service was great! Gets pretty busy over the lunch hour.

Solid place in St. Paul. Not really a dive bar per se, but it’s certainly more of the salt-of-the-earth type of place I recall going to with my dad after softball games in the early 80’s. The food is tasty basic bar food, and perfect for my hungover Sunday stomach. The drinks are also good, and generously poured, and they have a nice mix of stuff to choose from. It has a nice locals crowd, and it’s clean and inviting in a charming kind of way… like drinking beers and eating wings at your favorite uncle’s house and watching football when you were a kid kind of charming… and, yes, that was a very specific kind of charming. What makes this place a strong four stars is the staff. Ashley behind the bar is super nice and everyone else I have met there are great… friendly, down-to-earth and the kind of people you’d buy a drink for. The décor is comfort-pub style with no real rhyme or reason to the knick-knacks that adorn the bar area, but that just makes it more attractive. They do a meat raffle(and, since I’m originally from California I still find the whole ‘meat raffle,’ thing kind of odd) they have pull tabs, liquor, beer, burgers and chairs… what more could one ask for?(mabye a flamboyent Italian organ grinder with a big greasy mustache with a pet monkey in a little suit and bow tie would make it better, but that’s wholly subjective). I will certainly be back for another patty melt and a Maker’s Mark very soon!

I had an hour to kill before an ice cream tasting event on the North Side Como/Front area. I’m glad I came here after the renovation. It’s a good size parking lot, and it’s truly handicapped accessible because I got to walk up a long ramp. There were 2 large parties and others. It’s weird but you feel like you’re eating with everyone in the place, perhaps because voices carry in there, yet you’re not bothered by it. I was tempted into the Wed. special of beef stroganoff. It wasn’t like any I’ve had, and not in a good way. It was a simple brown gravy that tasted canned. Not saying it was, just tasted that way. No hint of sour cream, which is the base for this recipe. Not made with onions, just sprinkled with scallion greens more as a garnish. Mushrooms are on request. It’s a Russian dish, but no hint of dill. Fettucine noodles are too thin to handle and that’s why egg noodles are standard. The wider the better. However, the beef was super tender. So you don’t have to be a gourmet to make a sauce of beef broth, sour cream, s&p and dill. Two servers handled a semi full house just fine, and my server Desiree was pretty awesome. But much to my surprise this former dive bar has the most gorgeous bathroom. It’s actually a lot like my new one, only I have a stone type floor as well, so I don’t have to mop it a whole hell of a lot. But they have the cool raised sink, too. It’s a perfect location because you can use the bathroom and duck out the exit, and you don’t have to walk all the way back to the dining room if you’re parked out back. But do pay your bill first.

What a great place! This is your neighborhood dive bar. I had just flown in from Texas and my Aunt and Uncle brought me here and I am glad that they did. They treat you like family.

Typical neighborhood bar, but the restaurant is not. The food is very good. With the pot pie is to die for

Great neighborhood spot. Awesome happy hour — half off apps and $ 2 taps. Garlic bread and wings were delicious!

One of the better neighborhood joints in town. Dry rub wings are out of this world. Chilli is great as well. Decent beer on tap and typically have something seasonal to tap into. Beck’s Oktoberfest for $ 2.50? Sold. Kids love this place too and it is a great spot to catch a game.

Stopped in for lunch and was very surprised by the quality of the food and the service. Everyone in my group enjoyed their food. The service was great. They had a cool pasta bar set up for lunch which I thought was a great idea. The place is clean inside and out. Decent amount of seating and parking. The restrooms were clean. The bar side was adequately sized. I plan to go back and have another lunch or dinner. I would check them out if you are in the area. You’ll like the menu I believe.

Recently went to Schroeder’s with the family. It was pretty good, the kids loved it for some reason, even though their meals weren’t anything spectacular. I don’t know why they enjoyed it so much, they are pretty discerning usually. Not a place for vegetarians at all, pretty standard offerings. I had a roast beef hot shot, that was okay. I don’t eat meat often, so when I do I want it to be really amazing. The roast beef was sort of on the tough side, maybe they’ll invest in a slow cooker sometime.

Schroeder’s is like an oreo cookie: neighborhood bar on the outside, with a «real» restaurant on the inside. After a renovation a few years back, the traditional meat raffle, pulltab-type bar is across the wall from a spiffy little restaurant. You can hear your friendly server a-comin’ to the table by the clickety clack of her heels on the refinished wood floor. We visited Schroeder’s yesterday: my wife had the jambalaya recently lauded the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I had the mushroom swiss cheeseburger. I wrested a few forks-ful of the jambalaya from across the table, and it was nicely spiced… and a large portion. It was meaty enough and spicy enough to make a burrito filling, which is exactly what I intend to do with the leftovers. One side note, the chef(complete with exotic accent — French? Czech? Jersey?) came out to greet the many locals, and when I complimented the jambalaya, he gave me a strange look — just for a moment. It made me wonder. Do they get the jambalaya out of a industrial-sized can? Is Schroeder’s jambalaya people, like Soylent Green? I don’t care. It’s still tasty. And in the scheme of things, any place with a meat raffle that hasn’t had a knife fight in the past two years gets a baseline three stars from me. Oh, by the way, I noticed they make their own pot pies for take home. Might be an interesting variation from the usual Papa Murphy’s excursion.

I’ve lived in the Como Lake area for more than 20 years. Schroeder’s has been my neighborhood go-to spot for 5+ years… really since they took over Jeraldine’s. Food is always good. Service is always good. Bathrooms are clean. Drinks are cold. The Monday special — chicken pot pie — cannot be beat anywhere. Their chili is very good. Pulled pork sandwich is excellent. If they have the prime rib melt on the menu, order it – but with a friend because it is large and delicious. But it really is the people. Schroeder and his wife, Gail, are top of the line. If there is something wrong, tell them and they will make it right. The staff, from Nadine and Colleen behind the bar to Sarah and the rest of the wait staff are friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

This place can be easily overlooked, but it’s absolutely delicious. The meal feel home-cooked and the menu offers a good variety. I often go in on Saturdays for a bloody mary and corned beef hash with eggs. One of the best bloody marys I’ve had in town and again, I strongly recommend one if you’re at serious about your bloodys. Some of my personal favorites from the menu: — Chicken Wild Rice(OMG!) — Dry Rub Chicken Wings(seriously the best I’ve had) — Corned Beef Hash — Walleye — Rib(meat falls right off the bone) They have a bar section and a dinner section, so children are welcomed too. The staff is great and the owner commonly comes over(with the wife too) and introduces himself. I always bring family and friends in because I know they’ll be treated like family here.

On my quest to find good food in St. Paul, I found this little bar off of Como Aveneue near Frogtown. One of my coworkers mentioned that they were known for their chicken pot pies(only served on Mondays) so we all hopped in a car and went on our way. Not much to look at from the outside, the restaurant is simple and clean. We didn’t even look at the menu as we all knew what we were getting… these famous chicken pot pies. Within minutes, each of us were served a piping hot pie… a light, flakey homemade crust that was almost too pretty to break into! filled with potatoes, carrots, hunks of chicken and peas in a thick creamy sauce. Wonderful, wonderful comfort food for this dreary Febraury day. And the best part? The staff. The older guy(who I presumed was the owner) took special care of us throughout our experience. In addition, each of us got a homemade chocolate chip that tasted just like mom’s with our pot pie. Not the St. Paul grill but if you’re looking for home cooking that satisfies your soul… check this place out… or at least their pies. btw, didn’t make it into there, but a sign indicated pull tabs were available in the bar ;)

This used to be a dive bar, but they remodeled recently and its pretty nice on the inside. They received a grant for a Frogtown revitalization project. So it is one of the nicer looking bars in the area. I’ve actually never been in here to drink. It’s pretty close to my grandma’s apartment and we’ve come in here several times for their weekend breakfast. I believe that it is only served on Saturday and Sunday. Nothing about their breakfast is great, but its reasonably priced and you get good service. I don’t think many people know that they serve breakfast, so it is usually pretty empty. I had the corned beef hash once before and it was pretty disgusting. I wouldn’t recommend you get that. CBH can be a difficult breakfast dish to do correctly. When its done properly it can be great, when its cheap meat from a can, it can go horribly wrong. Everything else that I’ve had is pretty good though.
