For lunch: the lobster mac-and-cheese is über-rich but VERY good. I could eat a boatload of it if my thighs would stop screaming about their imagined future long enough for me to enjoy a bite. The drag with Alaska is that it occupies a space that has hosted about 3 other various mid-level lunch/dinner joints(Think: like a non-chain Champps or a Red Lobster. Sally’s was one place, and I don’t recall the rest…). So it feels like a mid-level almost-a-chain kind of place. Not that there’s anything wrong with a chain, but their lodge-type décor crosses the line from cozy to hastily-purchased-in-bulk-to-create-Atmosphere. Perhaps it’s a different experience at night; when dim lighting can cover a multitude of sins. It’s just odd. The lobster mac is solid, though. Extra-bonus: If you’re lucky, you can spot Dick Enrico(Second Wind Exercise Equipment) eating here with friends and marvel at the amount of tanner and sun time it must have taken to achieve that shade of tannery-orange. It’s fun like a game. ;)

I was drawn to Alaska Eatery because of my love for its smaller sister restaurant, Wayzata Eatery. However, like many families, these siblings don’t have everything in common. Besides both being in not the best location(being set off the highway is little better than in a parking lot), Alaska Eatery is much larger and more casual. Our server was really nice and brought us a plate of their pork shoulder to sample which the kitchen eventually wound up making as an entrée at our request. It was glorious. We also had a great appetizer with three cheeses and different kinds of sausage. Unfortunately however, it was a unanimous decision that the fish(we ordered the char and the halibut) was really salty. I was also disappointed with the Baked Alaska dessert, but since the last time I had it was when I was twelve and there were sparklers in it for New Years Eve. I’m not really sure anyone can compete with that. All in all, this restaurant won’t change your life, but it’s a good option if you’re in the mood for something different. It’s also a good middle spot to meet if people live in the cities and others live in the western burbs.
