We came here because the hubby wanted a green tea bun. We tried the sunrise bun, a green tea something or other i forgot and they were just ok. Friendly staff, good prices, but not worth the calories in my opinion.

I feel crazy that it took so long to eat at this jen of a bakery. It took a pbs special to get me out here and I’ve been to bakeries in my travels abroad which were like this. The smell alone of the fresh bread will make you happy to have decided to come here.

I was in Sacramento for business and I always like to find japanese bakeries when I travel and found Mahoroba Bakery. I had seen this bakery on tv before and always told myself if I go to Bakersfield I was gonna stop by. i knew this place was good by the Unilocal reviews and the long line when I got there. There was a gal in front of us ordering 6 dozen buns so I knew it was gonna be special. The buns filled with red beans were delicious and so was the ones filled with custard. I would of loved a bit for filling but they were delicious non the less. The lemon tart was more french style but also delicious. The clerk was friendly and the prices were reasonable.
I walked out with an assortment of a dozen buns and it was $ 18.00. Which cheaper than when I go to Little Tokyo in Los Angeles.

Arrived here around 9:45am and LUCKILY all of the pastries were still available, warm, and FRESH. Since it was my first time at this bakery, I definitely wanted to buy every pastry, but reading the other reviews helped save my wallet, so instead, I only opted for — the curry bun — kobe cream delight — green tea sunrise — Anpanman choco bun — blueberry ball — An pan(red bean) — strawberry Anko cream 7 items which worth $ 11.40 I wish I could give a descriptive detail about the pastries, but as soon as I received the warmth emitting from the bread, I immediately inhaled the curry and strawberry cream, followed by the green tea sunrise, which were all my favorite. While driving on the way back home, I snacked on the rest, and they were all just as delicious, but since I am fan of pastries I guess my judgement is a bit bias. In any case, whether you’re a fan of pastries or not, I’d still recommend Mahoroba for anyone, even if the prices are a bit far-stretched but understandable. If I’m ever in town again, I definitely do intend stopping by for the other selections.

This is a small bakery off Freeport, right across from Akebono. It’s in a really distinctly shaped building and the inside is pretty basic, but this is my favorite bakery in Sacramento! My only gripe is that I wish they didn’t run out of items so quickly — if you get there around 6 or 7pm be prepared for them to either already be closed or severely lacking in options. Best things to get are the green tea sunrise, anpanman, and green tea kobe cream, hands down! The sunrise has a light dusting of sugar on top that crunches slightly when you eat it and the flavor is really strong in both the kobe cream and sunrise. The kobe cream is so soft and fluffy. The chocolate anpanmans are super cute if you have kids — they have little faces on them and the chocolate inside is really light in flavor. Your safest option would probably be the green tea sunrise — I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone disliking it — it’s really good and simple! I usually also have a look at their refrigerated section too and get the strawberry/red bean pastry with the whipped cream — it’s sweet and decadent — you’d think the strawberry and red bean would clash but they really do taste great together! I would probably recommend this the most if you like trying new things and you want something on a hot day! Price range is around $ 10 for five or six pastries usually. I’ve never paid more than $ 20 even for a full box. Very cheap! Can’t recommend this place enough — the customer service is also always on point!

Everything is yummy and fresh! The breakfast egg thing is awesome! I’ve only left there once without getting anything because it was too crowded — I think the Casino bus had just dropped off a load across the street.

Wonderful Japanese baked goods. Wish their vegetarian savory items can be available earlier in the day when they just opened so I can have some. They only have meat-based savory items early in the day. The sweet items were great and not so sweet like the Green Tea and red bean pan. Helpful staff and good parking.

I have been coming here since they opened and never wrote a review. Back in the day, this building was the MacFarland’s candy store and was known for the octagon shape. When we are in town visiting with relatives we always stop by for some pastries. Our usual orders are the kobe cream, cream cheese and red bean. The bread is always fresh and the sweetness of each pastry is just right.

I have been here two times now; the first time my boyfriend and I came thirty minutes before closing but they were sadly closed early due to selling out. The second time we came earlier in the day and there were several pastries to choose from. I went ahead and ordered a Kobe Cream and a Custard Pie and my boyfriend followed suit. The guy behind the counter was friendly but not overly so. The total was just $ 5 and if you pay with card there is a small charge($ 0.35?). We just brought ours home to eat; the Kobe Cream we ate immediately: so good! The pastry itself was fluffy and soft, and the cream amazingly delicious. We decided to save the Custard Pie for dessert and put it in the fridge due to the cream inside. Because of that I can’t comment on the taste of this one, as it was completely hard when we went to eat it and didn’t taste great. I highly doubt this is due to the bakery but rather because we did not eat it immediately. Moral of the story: eat ASAP! I’m not a fan of this parking lot as the aisles are so tiny, but not holding that against them. Can’t wait to come back!

So here’s another update. I go here at least once a week now. I’ve tried 75% of the menu and everything is delicious so far. One of my favorites is the teriyaki chicken meatball pastry. Sometimes it is a bit salty for others but to me its soooo good! The crème puff is also one of my favorites. I still get my mom 3 loaves of the bread every two weeks from here. The bread does not even compare to any other bread I’ve had. If you haven’t tried it cause you’re afraid to try new things just get the bread and you’ll be amazed. If I lived closer I’d probably get a pastry every single day. I live in West Sac and work in Rancho so it’s kind out of the way but it is so worth it!

YUM! This place is so good! Even though I was full from ramen, I still wanted to eat something sweet and this place hit the spot. We got there about an hour before it closed and there were only a handful of pastries left but I luckily was able to get a kobe cream cheese and THELASTGREENTEAKOBECREAMPAN! I feel like it taste even better knowing I got the last one haha. While we sat and ate these delicious pillows, we saw two familes run in to buy the rest of the goods. So make sure you come early before they sell out! My favorite was the Green Tea Kobe cream pan because the cream was not too sweet. I wish I lived closer to come try their other pastries. Definately recommend!

I admit it, Mahoroba Japanese Bakery is defiantly the winner for me after two remarkable visits! This delicate bakery at Freeport Blvd delivers the finest, and the most remarkable pastries anytime, anywhere! As I entered, the concept is very quite and elegant filled with the fantastic smells of fully baked pastries right at the door. There’s a mini outdoor patio tables outside near the two entrance doors too. The employees including the owner has done a great job for making the customers like me very happy, friendly and satisfied. No cons at all! Now onto the pastries tasting! On my first visit days ago, I ordered the An Pan Man choco and the homemade curry pan bun. So far, these two tasted very good! The chocolate filling for the An Pan Man choco is very flavorful and natural without adding processed fillings! The curry pan bun also tasted not bad! The curry filling is remarkable giving the heatness of the medium leveled curry very balanced! For my next visit as of today on 10/14/2015, I also ordered the Green Tea Sunrise bun and the best selling item: the Kobe cream delight. As I ate it, the Green Tea Sunrise bun tasted very good! I can feel the sprinkles of green tea after I bite it. Very plain and delicious. Finally, the Kobe cream delight is the ! The cream filling is very smooth and naturally silky as I feel it right through my mouth. What a great meal for snack time! There’s some good parking spaces available, so you can park easier without the hassles. If the traffic is busy, you can park it at the surface street parking too. Otherwise, you can ride a bike, walk, or use public transportation easier without the hassles. All in all, Marhoroba Japanese Bakery is the coolest Japanese bakery ever in the Sacramento area! If you’ve seen PBS’ «A Few Good Bakeries» segment, you should defiantly try it! It’s worth the visit! My rating: 5 solid stars!

Squeeeeeeeeee!!! That is the sound of my excitement when I came through today. I saw this on TV on a PBS airing called«A Few Great Bakeries» and was excited to see it was actually located in Sacramento. It’s a far trek out from my neck of the woods, but I happened to be in the area so I knew I had to stop by. I came in the afternoon around 3pm and they didn’t have much of a selection unfortunately. I was able to pick up their #1 seller though, the Kobe Pan which is a vanilla custard filled sweet roll. I also picked up one of their Curry Pan for my husband, who used to order curry pan on a regular basis from a local bakeshop when we were living in Japan. He took one bite out of the curry pan and he said it took him waaaay back.

I’m not sure if my expectations were too high, or if I came at a bad time or on a bad day; whatever it is, I don’t understand the hype surrounding this place. I tried the Kobe cream pastry that everyone raved about on Unilocal, and I wasn’t impressed. I actually enjoyed the Green tea Kobe pastry more, but even then, I still thought it was just okay. I also tried the cream cheese pastry, but I thought the cream cheese flavor was overwhelming. The last thing I tried was the chicken teriyaki bread. The bread had melted cheese on it that had hardened. The bread and cheese were the best part because the teriyaki chicken was hardened and a bit cold even after the employees had warmed it up for us. I’m sad that I didn’t enjoy this bakery as much as everyone else. Aside from the chicken teriyaki, everything seemed to be baked perfectly. I think that my taste buds just aren’t being excited enough, unfortunately.

My husband and I stopped by the bakery on our way home from South Lake Tahoe last week. I had never tried to eat some breads at Japanese bakery in U.S.A before… so I definitely dropped in when we went back home! I was right! coz all of bread we bought there were so good but there were not enough bread in the case at that time… we arrived there around 2pm then we bought 2 Kobe cream, 2 sun rise, 1 An-pan and 1 Anpan-man. I wanted to buy some pie custard, green tea sun rise and curry pan though… I’ll definitely go there someday and buy that.

Oh my gosh! If you have ever been in a train or subway station in Japan, and have bought items from Pompador therein, then you will be overjoyed and thrilled to know that Mahoroba fits that profile. This is a small bakery with a daily selection of 12 – 18 choices of breads. Which in American terms means that they do a few things, and they do them all with expert aplomb! From the crunchy sugar pan to the bacon egg pan, everything is AMAZE-BALLZ!!! I would have taken pictures of my food but I inhaled everything too fast for photos. Oisii-kata desu YO!!!

My boyfriend’s mom loves the bread here so we come often to buy it for her. Everything is freshly made and the workers are efficient and attentive. I would say it’s one of the better bakeries and probably the only Japanese bakery in the area. We would always come early in the morning and already see people lining up for their bread. We’ve tried the sun rise, cream pan, choco pan, bacon & egg, ham & cheese croissant, curry pan, green tea sun rise, croquette pan, meatball… pretty much everything(lol). My favorites are: bacon & egg, ham & cheese croissant, sun rise, and green tea sunrise. These are also their more popular breads, which I can see why! :P The curry pan was a little dry, meatball was too salty, and cream pan had an excessive amount of cream cheese for our liking. Everything else tastes OK. Their bread is fairly inexpensive, we would buy ~3 dozen each time with our total around $ 50!

When I’m in here, I go berserk like Maddie Ziegler in Sia’s music videos… «Yes I want that, the #2 as well, can I get three of those, and two of the curry pans. Oh wait for the curry pans? Oh ok, I can wait. Umm, can I get two of that as well. And one of that. Actually make it three. And yes, that’ll be all(or so she thinks). Let’s see what else do you guys have… Yes yes, in the box please. I am SO sorry, but can I get two more of the kobe creams please sorry I’m a mess. Thank you so much! Oh can I get that drank over here as well» Super yummy bakery shop. Super patient staff. Super delicious bakery! For the savory and sweets, and the rich and poor.

Love this bakery! A lot of my Japanese childhood breads are there! The bread is nice and fluffy and everything just melts in your mouth. I suggest going there earlier in the day because everything sells out by the end of the day.
