Ok, bear with me now. Cal Neva Karaōke is a uniquely Reno experience. Like a Sands pool party is a uniquely Reno experience. You have to do it, just to say you did. Prepare yourself, by this I mean pregame with a few cocktails, and then go forth and stare at the hot mess that presents itself before you. The spectacle isn’t the singers, it’s the amazing diversity in the crowd. If you’re really lucky you might get to see that guy in his rascal that does the wheelies! Or me and my friends having a hysterically good time making asses out of ourselves. Either way it’ll be a story and isn’t that what life is all about? If you need another reason to go I think the drinks are cheap…

Karaōke at the Cal Neva is always good times. Darren the KJ is the best, great personality and enjoys having people at his gig to sing. It’s always a different scene each night. The crowd varies in age and personality. If you love to sing or enjoy listening to others sing and want to have a fun, inexpensive night then I would highly suggest this place.(My rating is based on the Club Cal Neva Karaōke) Cal Neva Casino itself needs to be renovated big time and is majorly smokey so if the environment is a problem for you this is not your place.

Since I was staying at Harrah’s, this was an easy walk across the street and right into the area where they do karaōke. The DJ, like most these days, has it all on the computer so you really don’t need to waste your time trying to read a catalog in dim light, to find your song… unless you don’t know the artist. The only thing that annoyed me was the tobacco smoke. Luckily, those affected by the smoke can sit at the bar close to the door… for some relief. You will be doing your performance from a stage before a small section of casino patrons on slots. The night I was there, we had an Elvis impersonator show up and do his thing. As a one night visitor, I can only assume that the singers were from Cal Neva or Harrah’s hotels.

This place is popular, and it’s a thrill singing in front of an entire casino, trust me you. The reason I give this place two stars is that you have to endure the shrieking and off-key singing of several people before you get to sing. It reminds me of the old days of karaōke before it was popular, before the 20-somethings started singing with all their Glee, High School Musical, American Idol inspiration. This is like going back several years to the Cortez when all you got were middle-aged folk singing awful country or old rock, way off key. The crowd is also rather divey. Now, I don’t want to sound like a snob. I like to hang out at dive bars like Shooters or W 2nd St, but those places at least sometimes have younger folk and a few cute women. This place was all old and middle-aged folk. If that’s your scene, fine. But if a 20 or 30-something was asking me where to sing karaōke or hang out with hot women, I wouldn’t tell them to come here. W 2nd St even has better singers and a better scene. Cortez seems to be the hot spot for 20-somethings.
