Challenger Ridge Vineyard & Cellars

Always an enthusiast for Washington wines, we checked out Challenger Ridge’s tasting room in Woodinville this past weekend. For the month of January 2010, the tasting fee is complimentary, and it was so worth it. Apparently, they’re known for their pinots which isn’t so common in WA. Pinots weren’t on the tasting notes that day, but some very fine wines were offered. A sauvignon blanc and pinot gris were on the agenda, so we tried the pinot gris. I thought it was very crisp and light, with a touch of sweet. But the reds were where it was at. The cab sauv tasted rather young but with much promise. We’re saving this bottle for awhile. The Gordon blend (named after the wine dog) which is a Bordeaux blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, is a wonderful red that can be enjoyed on its own or with a pleasant dinner with friends. The Syrah was a peppery, yet so incredibly smooth sip. I can’t wait to check out the winery in Concrete, but we’ll definitely be back to the tasting room in Woodinville.
