Stay away from the ‘chicken’ plate — I’m staring at some gnarled, grizzly chicken thighs the color of teriyaki, with an occasional awful gamey taste(I can only assume they were about to turn). They taste bland, with a hint of lemon, the turkish ‘rice’ is just plain old rice. The cucumber/tomato salad is drowning in a puddle of oil. The tomato sauce tastes like paste with some sugar. Nothing I hate more than a disappointing meal after a long walk in the rain to these fly by night carts.

I don’t eat out often for lunch because it’s pretty hard to find a healthy, as well as affordable(on a graduate student’s salary) option. Yassu offers a special $ 5 vegetarian plate that is super-tasty, filling, and my idea of a good lunch. It comes with a salad, 4 stuffed grape leaves, 4 falafel balls with a yogurt sauce, hummus, pita bread, and various veggies as garnish. It’s really good. I am not sure if it’s the special every day, but the last 2 times I have been it has been the special. I fully recommend this cart. It’s good for your heart !(and wallet) Bring your own plastic container and save the planet, man.

This Mediterranean cart just opened up today in place of the old King of Rice stand. It looks very promising. Now, I don’t know what came over me, but I ordered the dish people are least likely going to be excited to try: liver shawarma. Though I love it and it was cheap($ 4), I’m probably going to have a hard time selling people on Yassu based on chicken liver. Anyway, I was happy with it and I’m definitely going to try out their chicken or beef shawarma. I know they have veggie options too(hummus, etc). The portion wasn’t huge, but adequate, especially for $ 4. Looks like a place I’ll eat at and adds more variety to the ever-increasing food cart block near PSU. They’re still working on the menu, they say, so I’ll keep checking back. The woman working the window was really nice and can give you advice on what to try.
