Y-Chrome

Y-​Chrome has a pretty cool atmosphere and complementary beer, so it’s cool if you’re looking for the kind of barber shop where you go in and sit for 45 – 60 minutes before actually getting your hair cut.
Otherwise, I would’ve rather paid less money and gotten fewer perks. I get a pretty standard, basic haircut, and before tip it was $ 30. I know that’s not horrible, but I could’ve gone to any number of other places and gotten the same standard haircut for a lot less. The stylist who did the cut was very nice, and I got the feeling that she was experienced, but I still wasn’t crazy about how it came out.

I’d pass. I had a substandard haircut a few months ago. Not the end of the world. But just tried them again. Set up an appointment, arrived a few minutes later and then sat there for 25 minutes past the appt time ignored. Got up and left as they shrugged their shoulders. Won’t be back.

Require a reservation… If you are pretentious then this where you should get a hair cut.
I walked in a while ago into this place anticipating that I would walk out of it with shorter hair, but no I got kicked out of it not a half minute later for not having an appointment… Despite the fact there is only 2 customers and 4 barbers «stylist» 2 of ‘em claimed (we are totally booked and we are waiting) …left shop that I got kicked out of, feeling I was in in 6 stars restaurant or a Ferrari dealership (any which might accommodated me and welcomed my business and took my green bills. Unfortunately I’ve done business with this shop before and I bought some revita products (spent real money) and got my hair cut before without an appointment. Anyhow time to look somewhere else to get a hair cut a better place for sure.

Brit was great today! She was very patient with me and took me in earlier than my appointment time. (which I really appreciate!)
I’ve also had excellent service from Connor, but I think any of the staff you choose will give you a great cut!

Literally can’t figure out why I go back… You’ll get a good cut but there’s not a whole lot of passion behind it. I was originally a Modern Man customer so I was super spoiled from the start: those dudes remembered you, called you by name, popped your beer for you, and knew exactly what your standard cut was once they saw you once.
I’ve been going to Y-​Chrome for over a year because MM fell apart and every time I walk in it’s like they’ve never seen me before despite the conversations I’ve had with them and the now 8+ cuts I’ve had. Many times I roll in and I know you get a beer, but they don’t offer you one so then you feel awkward just grabbing one and popping it yourself. And my least favorite part: your barber will ring you up afterwards and if you had they a debit card they then ask, «would you like to put a tip on it?»… Ummmm well, I guess so cause society has turned it into a social obligation, ESPECIALLY when the person that just provided the service is blatantly asking. I thought it was only the PDX cabbies that asked that question as if your expected to tip.
Convenience… That’s why I go back. For someone that Loves pampering themselves, this is the worst reason ever. That’s on me. I’m going to finally find a barber that isn’t ok with just being mediocre. Brick and Mortar? Rudy’s? I’m coming for you…

Most excellent customer service I’ve received in a long time. Highly recommend. We were in town on vacation and I needed a shave and to get my beard trimmed up. There was a ½ hour wait (totally reasonable for a walk-​in) and we told the manager/​owner we’d go get a drink and be back. He invited us to stay and have a complimentary beer (for my wife too!) and play some pool upstairs. When my wife said she was going to run across the street and buy a phone charger he grabbed one from one of the barbers stations and handed it to her! So cool. The beard trim was spot on perfect and the straight razor shave was smooth and very close. Price was right on too, actually would have gladly payed more for services rendered. There was an excellent mix of music playing the whole time. really a top notch joint! Stop in and see them, you wont be disappointed.

Tried at least four different barbers here in over ten visits. Never once walked away disappointed.

I was just walking around trying to find a really good barber shop in downtown Portland. When I came across Y-​chrome and wanted to check it out soon as I walk to the door it was the best experience ever. For one I was offered a free beer as I wait for my haircut and once I was getting my haircut thanks to my barber Ashley, she was amazing. The staff there are very talkative like to communicate with the clients or customers. The barbers themselves male and female are very skilled and you know how to cut some damn hair and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visit in downtown Portland for a haircut or shopping. If you are a guest visitor to this country and this state and you’re looking for head cut, well look no further

Great shop in downtown Portland, open 7 days a week, and very skilled barbers/​stylists. Their website reservation system doesn’t work very well which sucks but otherwise the shop is great and I’ve always been happy when coming here over the years. Nicely done.

Went to Y-​chrome because it was close to my work and got great reviews. Was stoked to find out Connor works here, who is a fantastic barber and a good guy all around. He used to cut my hair at a different shop. Connor does fantastic fades, I’m impressed by how well he tapered the back and sides evenly with no line and even managed to get me out the door and back to work within half an hour. This place has a cool atmosphere, the people here are chill but respectful of your time. They have a pool table upstairs if you find yourself inclined to play a game. They’re also slightly cheaper than other barber shops so it’s a win/​win

Went with my boyfriend for first time. He really listened to what we said and gave Derrick an amazing cut. Blended perfectly ! Ask for Conner

Just moved to town and found this place to get my haircut. I made my reservation online, super easy! Got a good cut and had a delicious free beer while I waited. They had the Timbers on while I waited and I watched them take the MLS Cup :) Go Timbers!
Everyone was nice and chill I will definitely be back again.

Fantastic Place. Got referred to this place from a friend, and it exceeded expectations. Jessi did a great job on my hair, and it was half the price I pay to have it done at the salon my wife goes to. I highly recommend trying this place out.

I have since left but when I first moved here 2 years ago this place came recommended by a friend. I have a mohawk and I get very particular about how I want it cut. Y Chrome rocked it, I had my hair cut by 3 or 4 different people and EVERY TIME they did a great job. That is quality and consistency. Also: Beer=WIN

This is a really cool place. My friend and I got straight razor shaves, enjoyed nice conversation, and cashed in on the beer fridge they have available. We didn’t stick around long enough, but there was a pool table and a dartboard upstairs.
I wish there were more places like this close to home, but it was an awesome Portland experience!

A barbers shop that feels as unpretentious as this place, but still has a professional team should be celebrated. I have had 4 visits to this salon in the past 5 months. Consistent, great value ($ 25), fast and efficient barber service.
Connor is really good at his profession, he is young, energetic, enthusiastic, attentive and courteous. I hope he stays at Y-​Chrome for many years, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he opens his own salon soon.

Decent haircut, they don’t use a razor to shave your neck. So it’s pretty basic and over in 15 min, not my idea of a good haircut but I didn’t have to go home and shave either.

First off a free beer.
I had been on a 4 month dry spell until I got an awesome haircut from Kory. After leaving chrome went out had an amazing night and I wanted to believe it wasn’t the haircut. I guess in a few weeks I’ll know when I book Kory for a tune up.

I was pretty stoked to get a shave here while I was in the downtown area. The people here are super nice and it’s a lovely shop, plus, you can get a free beer while you wait. I’ve had a straight razor shave before and know what to expect. They should shave your face once and then start over again to get the stubble that remains (maybe even a 3^rd time). The girl shaving me was very nice and seemed to have very good technique. She also used nice shaving cream, oils and lotions, but she only shaved me once and that was it.
As a man shaving your face, you understand that you shave shave down (with the grain) the first time and then shave in an upward motion to get that close /​smooth shave the second time.
After I got my shave, I was disappointed that she only when over my face one time and it was still stubbly. I should have said something, but I thought she should have known by feeling my face when she was done. When I got home later, I shaved against the grain and got the close shave I was hoping for.
Again, the people were lovely and it is a nice place, but I did not get a very close shave.

Walk-​in haircut, beard trim and shampoo at 9am. Really cool place, nice music, nice conversation.
Haircut was exceptional, really nice fade. Understood what I wanted, and did a fantastic job, without cutting corners. $ 35 + tip.

I’m a long way from my usual barber. So while here in Portland I found this place and its a winner. Needed a really good haircut and they came through. Price was right and the cut was perfect. Hard to find good barbers these days. Now I have one here in Portland. Thanks guys.

I love the vibe and the fact that it doesn’t seem like a chain (Rudy’s and Modern Man give me the chain vibe) — Y Chrome just feels like an old fashioned shop.
Ashley is awesome– but I just can’t get over the price. Paying close to $ 40 after tip is just a little steep for me.. . Even if it does come with a beer.
