Synthrotek

There is a lot packed into this assuming storefront, which is associated with the modular synth company Synthrotek. Not surprisingly, they have lots of their modules set up and ready to play with and purchase. They also have a rotating assortment of modules from other companies, so though it is the «company store», you can see how they play nice with others. They had some really nice «lunchbox» sized synths out when I visited.
They offer some modules as kits or bare boards, which is nice if you know how to solder.
I was really impressed with the range of parts to make their kits (and other folks’ online plans) that they had crammed in there… Now that Radio Shacks are becoming rare and electronic surplus stores are dwindling, it is nothing short of awesome to have a place to get a nice range of electronics basics without waiting on mail order. If you are into eurorack synths they had faceplates galore for your own creations or as spacers. There are a good number of useful surplus audio bits and bobs, like Rock Band drum pads, tucked on the parts wall.
So how does it compare to the doyen of Portland modular synth stores, Control Voltage, or the upstart Muff Wiggler?
Synthrotek is smaller, grittier, cheaper, more Synthrotek-​focused, and has more parts and basic electronics stuff. If you have set foot in CV or MW, or have a soldering iron at home, you should check them out.
