I almost don’t want to write this because I don’t want this incredible bar to get too popular. The outside is nothing pretty – nondescript shack, but once you step inside, you are greeted with a sweet cozy bar that is shaped like a ship galley with two cozy rooms and a really great outdoor patio with darts and corn hole stall. And the beer is legit! I haven’t tried much food yet but I’ll definitely be back to my new favorite neighborhood bar!

I love this spot! I think everyone would if it weren’t on 82nd. The exterior is a bit off putting for yuppies, and that’s a great thing. Friendly and knowledgeable bartenders happily navigate you through a great tap list. Sensational patio, I plan on spending all of my available sunny day drinking days at it. I love the food menu, and I’m a vegetarian. Yes, a veg love German food. Dude. I’m in a tough place – I don’t want the place to become another overcrowded mess-but I want them to be around for a long time and to find success. So, I begrudgingly give it 5-stars. Just save a seat for me.

I’ll admit a bias, as I bought a house in the neighborhood due to Andrea, Doug, and the other staff making a good impression. But this bar is solid. No Video Lottery machines, few televisions, and a big sturdy Stammtisch keep the mood mellow. The happy hour food is affordable, and the revolving taplist of local and import German style beers provide a haven for those seeking refuge from IPA inundated PDX. The parking is difficult right now, but 2 doors down the Taboo lot is huge(and they’re always friendly). I hear that the bank across 82nd after hours allows parking. Don’t park in King’s Bakery lot.

It doesn’t look like much on the outside, but the interior is clean and bartenders are welcoming. I pop in from time to time and have always enjoyed myself. I’m not a beer snob by any means but they seem to always have something I enjoy drinking. If you’re in the area, check this place out.

I may be slightly biased because my girlfriend works here, but this is a great hangout spot. Happy hour is ok, you only get 50ish cents off a beer, but the food is excellent. Most draft beer is either from Germany or a local German style beer. Rock Bottom Brewery makes the flagship«Stein Haus India Pale Lager» which is my go to. Bartenders are friendly, so are the regulars. There is also a nice outdoor patio with cornhole boards and dart boards. I am here all the time, not just because its close! Trivia on Thursdays with Doug is always a good time.

Like other comments, the interior is far better than the exterior albeit it’s pretty musty smelling inside. Their beers choices were great, no complaints there. Service was slow(there were only about 7 people some of which appeared to either be regulars or actual employees). What i found to be off putting was the behavior of whom I assume to be the owner who was drinking shots at the bar. It felt like I was watching an episode of «Bar Rescue». We were the only people watching TV and at some point he commented out loud that it looked like it was news(it wasn’t) and that wasn’t good for a bar. He changed the channel without any concern for the people actually watching it. He then changed it to some Discovery show… which apparently is more bar appropriate I guess?

Dropped in here at happy hour and was promptly and enthusiastically greeted by the bartenders. They have a solid selection of Bavarian inspired, both local and from Germany, brews. I got an order of the happy hour brats which comes with potato chips, mustard, and a lightly pickled cabbage. I wish the brat was grilled for better taste. At $ 3 its very difficult to take away a star. I also had two of the beers from Germany and they were excellent. Let’s not forget they were less than $ 5 each for half a liter which is very affordable. I’ll definitely be back here for more delicious beers and try some of the other food items.

Super clean and warm interior. Great happy hour menu. Thank God for good German beer on tap. And local German-style beers are interesting. I’m so proud that this is the 2nd closest bar to my house.

I was skeptical about visiting a bar on 82nd but I was impressed. Nice selection of German beers and it’s a great back patio. I didn’t try the food this around. Now I have a reason to go back.

Roll out the Stein Ha-youse We’ll have a Stein ha-youse of fun. Roll out the Stein ha-youse It won’t beat you to death like Atila the Hun Roll Out the Stein Ha-youse on skinny legs like a bull moose Roll out the Stein ha-youse Like an egg from a golden goose I just want to say that I walked in here and felt extremely misunderstood. But that may be because I spoke a mixture of made-up German and real German. The bartender’s response: «What is that?» Honestly ma’am, I have no idea. The words that come out of my mouth often have no connection to the thoughts inside my brain. By the way, the dopplebock is STRONG. Three pints will send you over the bay. Four will make you howl at the moon. This place has beautiful, cozy interiors, friendly barkeeps, and as much as I like Roscoe’s the pace there feels very frantic sometimes. This place is mellow, and you can get a deep-fried brat for $ 3 during happy hour to soak up enough Dopplebock to make you legal behind the wheel – not that I would know – I walk here from a few blocks away. Though it it lives in the shadow of the giant, rotating porn store sign next door, Stein Haus holds its Deutsche Kopf high and imparts a dignified air to 82nd. So whether you’re getting out of class at PCC across the street, or getting off… er…some place else… don’t be the one who says Ich binn eine Er Kartopflekoff. Instead, be the one who says, mach mitt, veg vomm ol! Make a stop at Stein Haus part of your day, every day, and you will never say: «auch! menie k-née schmurtzk» ever again. Remember, a dopplebock a day keeps the liver away!

Been at this place a few times now, and I must say its great(despite it being located on 82nd). The place may not look like much on the outside but the interior is great, it even has an outdoor patio. The bartender is great, and a really nice person in general. The food is good, I would recommend the German burrito to anyone. There is also a focus on German food since this place is German oriented after all. The drinks are great, especially the ones on tap, even though I wish they were a bit cheaper, but quality costs… Overall, this is a great place I would recommend to just about anyone.

OK, the only reason why I am not giving this place a 5-Star rating is because they need more German & Belgium Beers on tap. The food wasn’t anything to write home about. Honestly, if they just offered pretzels, fondue, sausage and kraut, I’d be fine with that. There is no need for a «German-Style» burrito. The beers we had were great!!! German/Belgium of course! However, if there were more offerings of these styles, I’d be there every other day!!! The place was almost empty(by that I mean there were 2 customers –me and my hubby– a bartender and one person leaving) when we got there at 5:15PM. More people showed up as we were leaving 2 hours later. I think if more people enjoyed German/Belgium beers, this place would be always be busy. So I am glad that there are not more people who have my palette for beer in the PDX area. The wait staff was nice and friendly. The beer pours were GIGANTIC! The food was just OK. The place was clean. Not in the best area of town, so I wouldn’t bring a lot of $$ nor would I leave anything of value in the car. I wouldn’t overdress either. It has a casual and easy vibe. I will be back…

I’d heard about this place, and I was aware it was from the same people who have Roscoe’s over in Montavilla, but driving by it looked SO unappealing. After months of living in the area, I finally gave it a shot. Bravely walking in to the strange brown building, I was shocked at how normal it is inside. Honestly, it’s basically the same look as Roscoe’s has, so if you can handle that chill, unassuming, dive bar vibe, then you’re good to go. Beyond not being as scary as it looks, the tap list was GREAT, and the food was awesome. Taps first. They’re set up as a German beer bar, so I assumed basically a generally match with the other joints in town. Not at all. They’ve got a really awesome mix of imports with German styles made from breweries in the region. Big fan of that. Prices were also really good, I’d venture to say the best of the German places in town by quite a bit. Food. Really interesting menu… a German Burrito? Well, I was hungry, so I risked it. Hell yeah! Can you say German stoner food? This thing is like somebody went to a German buffet super high and this is what they ended up with. Great price, and really unique. Worth mentioning that the bartender was really cool both times I was in. Really helpful, and very friendly. Sadly, this place has been really empty both times I’ve visited. I’m a big fan. Not that I want it to be Roscoe’s packed, but there was nobody in there. Hoping they can do something with the outside of the building so everyone else doesn’t take as long as I did to venture in to this rad place.

This is a cool place at times. I’ve been here with live bands and good friends. The beer selection is decent and they have a few random selections you may not find elsewhere. Sometimes the bar has a very shady crowd from the neighborhood. That is not always pleasant. The staff is very friendly.

Awesome German beer bar that serves… wait for it… GERMANBEER! And at the most reasonable rates outside of rural Germany at that! Stein Haus is owned by the people behind Roscoe’s(in Montavilla neighborhood). Like Roscoe’s, Stein Haus has friendly, knowledgeable staff, simple divey-ish atmosphere and great beer. What’s best is their .5L steins are all about $ 5 which makes this easily one of the best«bang for your buck» craft beer bars in Portland. In addition to the great beer, they serve good German style food(and I believe I saw a vegan option on the menu), they have very nice patio seating, and they have an impressive selection of board games for anyone to play. The downside is that, yes, it is on 82nd Ave. Not just on 82nd, Ave, on the EASTSIDE of 82nd Ave(next to the infamous Hung Far Low Chinese Restaurant). However, it is for this reason that I have given 5 stars instead of 4. This would be a very good bar in Portland(for the quality and price of the beer) but as it is a one of a kind experience on 82nd, it deserves the extra star. If you’re sick of IPAs(like me) and in the mood for a good, cheap German beer, I strongly recommend Stein Haus. It is actually worth the trip to 82nd to check it out. Just leave your valuables at home.

It’s finally the Steinhause again! For those of you who don’t know, they shut down years ago, and it’s gone through several changes/owners since then. It was even a horrible strip club for some time. Happy the Steinhause is back. Having said that, the tap list is AMAZING. Only German beers, on a rotating tap. Where else can you go on 82nd and get and pint of 12% Bock? Plus the owner/bartender is a great person. Really personable and nice. Also, huge plus, no LOTO machines! There’s a pool table, two pinball machines, darts, and a corn hole pit. The tables are big, wood, Octoberfest type tables. It’s quiet, and free of 82nd drama. Nice patio, with tons of seating. The food, oh the food. Authentic German pub food at its best. The sourbraten burrito(spelling?), you must get it! They slow cook the meat for days and mix it with picked veggies and a mustard aioli… You should go!

REOPENED!!! That’s right, you can hear all about it on the Brew Happy podcast(google it) or just go down there and find out for yourself! Johnny is behind the bar and more than happy to set you up with a delicious import or local craft beer. All German themed beers, foods, and style. Out door patio for smokers those who love the shade. Sopranos pinball, another one and some other games out back. If you live in East Portland this place is the oasis you’ve been looking for!!!
