I love soup. I could eat soup everyday for the rest of my life and be a happy camper. The problem for me with Spoons is that I make really delicious soup at home. Sometimes I’ll forget my lunch or just be lazy that morning. Spoons is OK in a pinch, but Supa in Big Pink is much better and more affordable. The guy who runs the food cart is very friendly and the bread is delicious. I can’t justify the cost of their soup when it’s constantly mediocre.

Spoons is easily one of my favorite food carts! For one, Derek and his staff are friendly and efficient. The cart is clean, which is a major factor in deciding where I eat. And most of all, the food is spectacular! I love the soups but my favorites are the salads. As a Caesar salad lover I have tried them everywhere and this is one of my favorite. I go to this cart about every other week.

Wow! Really disappointed. I ordered a salad(one that I have ordered multiple times) and came back to my office to eat it. I noticed the chicken smelled and tasted a little funny. Gave it one more bite and said no more. My coworker also smelled the chicken and said it did not smell right. I walked down there to let them know to check their chicken — I brought my leftovers down for them to smell/taste. He got defensive saying he doesn’t serve bad chicken. I said I know that because I eat here often, but something tastes strange and I don’t want anyone to get ill. No offer to make me a new salad or refund my money. They have lost a good customer.

Yummmmmmmmmmm soup and salad. I love the southwest salad. There isn’t a ton going on, you can actually taste the lettuce and there are just enough ingredients to make every bite interesting. The soup is also awesome. I’ve had the hungarian mushroom soup, which is a comforting mushroom soup. There were tiny chunks of mushroom everywhere. It was delicious. I have also had the tomato soup, which was light and fresh. It was a chunky soup, rather than a purée. Lets not forget the hunk of bread that comes with your soup — or your soup and salad! I am such a fan of this food cart. I would eat here every day, if my pocket-book would allow it.

A veggie wrap that supposedly featured feta cheese and avocado, made me wistful for either ingredient. Perhaps I should have stuck to ordering soup. Prompt service and cheerful attitude are great, but feta is a friend indeed. Sad when it’s gone.

Delicious, nutritious, innovative tastes, and friendly to boot. This foot cart is the best! I have always been impressed and satisfied with their well prepared soups and fresh flavorful salads. The Hungarian mushroom and chicken noodle are recent favorites. Sometimes the simple things in life are the most valued-soup is no exception!

The food carts are great, but if you are trying to watch your figure then your options shrink significantly. There is not a lot of emphasis on local or organic or healthy, so knowing your options is key if eating at the carts is a regular thing for you, as it is for me. Otherwise, you could really put on some serious, delicious weight. For everyday lunches, I just want something simple. It is fantastic to work in an area where I can get everything ever on the planet – and for cheap, but mostly, I eat salad. I work nearby(at a desk. All day) and have a few usuals worked out, so I really can’t believe it took me this long to try this place out. So far, I have only tried a couple of the soups, but the wraps are super duper fresh-and are the only ones like it nearby(trust me, I love a wrap. There is a serious lack of wraps.) Minus one star because it is a little spendy: Quality, I get it, but still. The price rules it out as a viable daily option. I am relatively new and have only met the fellow, who is, as everyone has said, very friendly and easy to talk to – and I am a classic New Englander and hate idyll chatter with strangers(also read; avoids Dutch Bros) so this really says something.

When you have Beef listed in a soup, and Vegan listed as another, I can only assume that I’m veggie-safe when ordering a soup with only vegetables listed in it. The(chicken) potato mushroom soup would have been better appreciated had the mystery ingredient been revealed before purchase.

Awesome soups, rotating daily and with the seasons. Great southwest tortilla salad, wraps too! Usually quick and always delicious. My favorite go-to for a healthier food cart option. I think their Tomato Basil Bisque is delicious. Find them on facebook under«Spoons on 5th Foodcart» for daily posts of the menu including updates on soups!

It was a cold day and I was excited to get tomato soup and grilled cheese, I’m SO disappointed! I got the tomato bisque and it was AWFUL! It was SO sweet it could have been a dessert! It was NOT very good soup and the grilled cheese was lacking A LOT of cheese! :(I was really looking forward to having a soup cart near by but now I guess I’ll find somewhere else.

Healthy options available or a delicious grill cheese & tomato soup comfort food choice too. Quick & friendly. Almost always a 5 star experience, expect today my chili was a little bland. But that could have been my fault I was craving their cheddar bacon soup and they were sold out. Definitely worth trying!!!

Great cart in the 5th Ave pod. Their hours are somewhat restrictive, but the food is always fresh and tasty. As the title would suggest, they are primarily known for their soups, and they generally have four or five options available each day. They also have fresh salads; I find the seasonals and the southwest tortilla to be the best. Most of the salads can be ordered as a wrap as well. Additionally, they serve grilled cheese sandwiches. Spoons accepts Go Box tokens, and will give you a 50 cent discount if you bring your own to-go container.

Ffffrrrresh salad wrap with salmon and avocado… friendly service people… Plus, it’s just nice to have some greens and lighter choices compared to the other trucks here.

I really like this cart because they always seem to have a soup that grabs my attention as I walk by. The salads are really good too. Some days i’ll just take the max down here to grab a salad to go before I am off to work. They are pretty large salads for only 5 $. I have yet to try one of the wraps but am really tempted to soon! I had the thai coconut soup last time and it was killer! Love the big ol hunk of bread that comes with it, makes perfect for dunking ^_^

Of course it was raining cats and dogs during our one day in Portland. We were trying to be adventurous in our food selections, but who could possibly turn down a hot bowl of soup? We decided on the chicken barley soup, which comes in a cute wax-lined paper cup with a hunk of rustic bread. The guy behind the counter was friendly and clued us in on where to find shelter(hint: the bank/mall across the street has seating areas, couches, and coffee tables for your on-the-go dining pleasure). The soup itself was hearty with a bit of an unexpected kick from the black pepper. Martin polished it off happily.

I stopped by again Wednesday(1÷18÷12) to give the soup another shot. This crappy weather has me in the mood for soup all the time. I tried the Tomato Tarragon this time around and was pleasantly surprised. It was full of flavor and had body. It definitely hit the spot. My past experiences there have been similar. Sometimes it’s hard to coax a lot of flavor out of certain types of soup and it really depends on what you like. I can’t judge the whole menu based on just one soup. I’ll try again. If it’s good, I’ll bump the food to 4 stars.

At the risk of tarnishing my track record of writing a 5-page long diatribe for each and every review I create — I’ll step off my soap box and into a bowl or a cup of soup from Spoons. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to eat a hug — this is it! In 40 – 55 degree weather and an abundance of rain here in Portland, my bowl of cream of spinach soup with its goat cheese croûton felt like I was holding a cup of heaven. I then realized I was making obscene noises and drooling profusely so I took my leave before I drove any of their business away or was asked to leave. The guy serving it was delightful and engaging and helped me pick the perfect soup for the type of day I was experiencing. Yes, yes I tend to be that annoying customer who asks«so what should I order?» or «what’s your favorite?» to the servers. Some(rightly) look at me like I’ve lost my mind and some actually help me out and tell me. I’ve never been disappointed by using this ordering tactic and today was no exception. I eat at the food carts almost each and every day and have enjoyed just about everything I’ve had from them. This one just needed to be written about on a day like today(read«craptacular cold wet rainy train wreck») where you just want something warm and soothing. Mission accomplished!

If it’s raining and it’s Portland, chances are I am taking my giant comic strip umbrella and my flammable work slacks and trekking across town for a piping hot cup of soup. Why do I walk 11 blocks out of my way in the rain just for soup you ask? Aside from being delicious and hitting the spot every time, I kind of have a thing for their bread. Crusty, delicious rustic goodness, buttered and dipped in to soups so tasty they make you forget about how crummy the weather is. The french onion is my fave, the tortilla not tortilla-ey enough but overall this is a good spot to get some soup with fresh ingredients and support your local carts.

Considering that I walk past all the other delicious Portland food carts without so much as blinking, Spoons receives an obligatory star-bump. And since I’ve already raved about their healthy lunchtime offerings, I will use this update to expatiate about the awesome folks ‘behind the cart.’(I will then try to sell the rights to VH1, or perhaps the food network…) Derek the soup guy has a smile that could stop crime and his helper puts Mary Poppins to shame. They are far more similar to the Soup Fairy than the Soup Nazi, sans the creepy sneaking into your room at night and leaving soup under your pillow bit. They’re so dang friendly that even after I have my meal in hand, I find myself blabbing away about the health benefits of lentils or how they managed to pack such a smoky flavor into a vegan soup. Fortunately for them, I am not their only loyal customer, and I am gently reminded to step aside so that others can experience the pure euphoria of Spoons — or just get a cup of soup. Whatever.

There’s nothing like a hot cup of soup on a cold day. Especially when you get it from a soup cart. The folks at Spoons like to think of themselves as «soup nazis», but they are far from nazi. They’re simply too nice for that. These two kick out a new set of three soups every week-day for lunch. Along side these soups, they offer wraps and tasty salads. The soup and salad combo(with rustic Italian bread) is $ 6, and worth every penny. I can’t even begin to catalog the variety of soups offered at Spoons, but they offer soups from all continents and all ethnicities. Paired with a nice hefty serving of Caesar salad, a cup of their hearty soup can’t be beat. They use healthy, high quality ingredients, and the flavor shines through. This is some gourmet soup, but from a decidedly non-gourmet cart. Seek these two out amongst the row of carts near the US Bank tower on 5th off of Stark. Don’t delay… or there will be no soup for you!
