This place is DIRTY! The meat department smells like putrid meat. There are constantly a ton of flies. You can see fly poop on old dusty items that must be ages old. If it rains water drips from moldy holes in the ceiling (they even get out buckets). I know the building is old but when there is food involved they need to fix these things. Twice I have used the restroom weeks apart only to find fecies on the toilet seat and even smeared on the walls. Before I knew about the filth I was excited about all the sausage and tried a few, all of which were absolute abominations. They even have one that they put candied nuts, candied apples & candied bacon in… basically candy in a meat casing with nothing to balance it… YUCK! In short its a shame because they get in some quality products like painted hills meats but I’d stay away from anything unpackaged coming from this filthy rotting mold farm or from the hands of the staff that obviously have low standards for health and cleanliness. I love that this place is old, and I love that it’s supposedly locally owned but this store is an incredible letdown given the reputation. Its also funny that they have management making 5 star reviews pretending it’s from the stance of a real customer. One made on 1÷8÷16 is from the meat department manager pretending he’s a customer… don’t get it twisted this place is nasty!

Decent selection of specialty food, but prices are too high. There is hardly any organic produce. My favorite part about the store is the meat department. They have an awesome dog selection. All custom made. Super delicious!
Plus this is the only place I’ve found Trinidad Scorpion salt. There are other really good salts as well.

If you’re into sausage… lots and lots and lots of sausage (get your mind out of the gutter) this is definitely the spot. The sausage purveyors behind the counter are grand as well.

Sheridan Fruit is like a fine wine… it only gets better with time… they celebrate 100 years in 2016! Very few places make it more than a year or two in this town, yet this place has experienced both world wars, the depression, our lone NBA championship… our lone MLS championship… These guys were Portland before your grandparents were born on the otherside of this continent… cobblestone streets still peek through the pavement around this old building so of course the building looks a bit rundown… but it’s also what gives it that charm! Inside are some of the kindest, most sincere people you’ll find… I should know because I work with them… you can tell which ones are vested and which ones are just passing through, but overall, customer service has always been excellent. Like any store some things are more expensive than others, but not by much and still reasonable. There is something for everyone here… I am amazed at the selection packed into such a small store! However, their meat department far exceeds my expectations! KNOWLEDGEABLE… RESOURCEFUL…EXTREMELY ACCOMMODATING… I don’t think they know the word ‘no’…you want a chicken spatchcocked and rubbed in spices or marinated? At no extra charge? No problem! You want 5 lbs of ground beef in ½ lb packs? Service with a smile! These guys are legit and the only place I’ll go to buy meat because it is locally sourced, prepared fresh by these guys, and prepared the way I want it at prices you can’t even find at nicer markets! AND THEY’VE BEEN DOING IT THIS WAY FOR A CENTURY! It’s why I shop here. When everyone else has come and gone, this little market, family owned, with lots of character stands resilient because they learned long ago to take care of people. I shopped here long before I worked here and let me tell you that it is a rare treat to work in a place that you love going to. They may not be the hippest place in town and they may make a mistake or two (ie undercooked burgers) but I’ve never known them not to make things right… all you have to do is ask, because at Sheridan Fruit, everyone is family.

I decided to give the local «natural/​healthy» market a try and boy do I regret it. I gave this place 3 different times to try and redeem itself. On the first occasion I bought shrimp spring rolls that were expired and re-​dated, I had stomach aches all day after eating them that day.
The second trial I underwent was buying a burger from the front of the store where they are grilling them, I got a pink burger that only got pinker as I got to the middle of it but I was the lucky one because one of my coworkers got his burger so raw that it actually bled when he bit into it!
Third and final sin Sheridan committed was handing over incubator temperature food. I don’t understand why the deli clerk asks if I want my breakfast (aka eggs, meat etc) hot because it is always given out lukewarm or around that, basically the temperature at which every microbial and biological disease carrying pathogen grows.
Hey Sheridan, stay true to your name and stick to selling fruit. Over and out — G.

Its a great place to get unique hand made sausages and the deli has a decent deal on lunch time sandwiches (if they get your order right) But, don’t buy anything else there, its twice the price if not more. They are also never open in the evenings (i’m talking like 7pm) which is weird cause that’s when I want to go and buy a nice cut of meat for the family.

What a fantastic resource.
Local. Authentic. Terrific and reasonably priced fresh produce. On-​site butchers. Seafood. Wine. Beer. Great selections of vinegar and specialty products, just enough unusual imported delicacies to keep it interesting without being overwhelming. The best roasted hazelnuts (in bulk bins) ANYWHERE. They’ve offered bulk foods for decades, long before the big groceries caught on. House-​made soups and beef jerky and sauerkraut and all sorts of delicious foods in the deli. Cauliflower and caper salad. Reuben sandwiches. Chicken and red lentil soup. Let it flow!

I have been coming to Sheridan once a week for the last few years. The folks who work here are very Portland and are happy to let you be a part of their Sheridan family, if you don’t act like an entitled jerk. The guys in the meat dept. are always helpful and polite even when I put in a big order and monopolize their time. One employee in particular Ollie has always made me feel very welcome. He is friendly and has a positive attitude even on the dreariest days. I no longer see him when I checkout which is too bad because I would purposely look for him and wait in his line.

The food cart’s food has been steadily declining. The beef the use in burgers and philly is full of fat and chewy. What happened to this place?

I visited for the very 1^st time today & they do seem to have a unique selection of items. This was the 1^st time I’ve ever made it through the entire checkout process without the clerk saying a single word to me. He just carried on a conversation with his coworker, & expected me to just figure out how much I owed, scan my credit card, & get the heck out of there. Which I promptly did, & I will not be returning. At least greet your customers, say thank you, tell me how much I owe, or anything! Obviously personal conversations are more important than return customers.

well, i must say, i’m pretty disappointed this morning. i go to Sheridan’s probably 3 – 5 time a week, and usually its pretty good. but this morning was abysmal. i came in to order from the deli. after waiting for a few minutes, no one acknowledged i was there (as per their usual setup). i found a guy and asked if he could find someone or help me. he said the guy should be there shortly, but basically just brushed me off. i waited a few more minutes and left.
while this was an old main stay, i might be reconsidering where i suggest myself and coworkers take our regular business.

Sheridan Fruit Company is a small, but well-​equipped grocery store that also has a deli and grill serving lunch. I really appreciate their quality, affordability, and friendliness.
Their deli offers a good variety of sandwiches, from the standards (Italian subs, Reubens, BLTs, Cuban sandwiches, etc.) to some novel options, like the «Pig & Pepper,» which consists of ham, pepper jack, cream cheese, pepperoncinis, and a hot pepper jelly on Dave’s «Blues Bread» (a whole-​grain bread with blue cornmeal in the crust). I recently had this latter one, and was pleased with it, though I’m not sure I’d drop $ 6.95 on it regularly. The pepper jelly is not as piquant as I might’ve hoped, but I love how it has a bit of sweetness, too.
Their real strength is in their grill. Specifically, you can get a house-​made Polish kielbasa there for $ 3.95 that’s right fresh off the grill, on a perfectly-​grilled bun. And you can add grilled peppers and onions for free if that’s your thing. They also do a spicy sausage of the week (I had a Louisiana hot link) that rotates, as well as Altengartz bratwurst and others, all for $ 4.95. All of these (the kielbasa in particular) are a great lunch deal – it takes no time to make, one is big enough to satisfy your lunchtime appetite, and it’s cheaper than anything you can get at the nearby foodcarts, to say nothing of the pub down the street. Like condiments? They’ve got a truly massive condiment bar stationed by the grill, featuring a good variety of mustards, several relishes, ketchup, a couple different hot pepper options, minced red onion, and house-​made sauerkraut.
Sheridan Fruit Company’s produce is the freshest I’ve found in Portland. Far better than anything you could get at New Seasons, to say nothing of Safeway or Trader Joe’s, and it doesn’t cost any more, either. As for meats, I saw a good variety, with a neat focus on game (elk sausage, anyone?) and wild-​caught fish. Also worth mentioning is their wine department. While it’s not huge, I was impressed. A good number of those bottles are displayed with tags listing the store’s assessments of them, as well as ratings from experts. On that note, I saw a respectable-​looking selection of beers, particularly in 22 oz. bottles. Finally, they had a beautiful display of cheeses for sale, including some rare imports and novel domestics.
Sheridan Fruit Company is a great grocery store that makes a good lunch for cheap. It’s no surprise to me that they’ve been around 99 years. Whether you’re looking for something to make or something already made, you’ll find something tasty here.

Just discovered this place about three weeks ago. Their ROAST BEEF is very quite tasty and done «just right». Lots of other nice things, if sometimes a little pricey.
But, overall, I was happy having lunch there in their Italian-​style café area (about four tables — small, deli-​style dining).

When I lived in Michigan, my family would take a drive to the «country». We lived on the edge of town, so that took a whole 2 minutes to start hitting farmland. We would drive to Milligan’s Meat Market, which was a bit further away. This was right on the farm/​ranch. Since leaving Michigan, I have lived in major metropolitian areas and have to admit, I was used to going to the grocery store for meats.
Though Sheridan’s feels like a small grocery store, it packs a punch. It reminds me of my days visiting the meat market in Michigan as a kid. The crowd is mixed. You’ll find Portland’s share of hipsters, manual laborers, suits, and vagabonds hitting this place up.
The meat counter is filled with so many amazing choices — a HUGE selection of sausages both in the counter and more in the back! ask for the list. They carry a great selection of cuts, ground beef and pork, roasts, poultry and even some wild game. Painted HIlls and Carlton Farms is what you’ll get here for beef and pork.
Don’t stop there though. They also have some great pre-​cooked meats as well. One of our favorites is the smoked pulled pork at $ 6.99 a pound. You can easily make 4 – 6 sandwiches with that. They also have some pretty good twice baked potatoes, smoked chops, etc.
Walk around and you’ll also find a great deli counter filled with amazing choices. They sell a small assortment of dry goods, as well as Grand Central and Dave’s Killer Bread, a solid selection of hot and BBQ sauces from around the area and across the country. Good wine, produce and an amazing bulk area.
The other gem here is the outside grill. If you get a chance Monday-​Friday, grab a burger, sausage, or their meal of the day. Their meal of the day menu must be as broad as Widespread Panic’s song list because I have yet to have a duplicate meal there and have eaten at the grill tons of times. The key here is to get in early for lunch because their daily choice sells out quickly, and then you’re only left with the choices of an amazing cheeseburger, sausage, or other standard menu item.

This is where I go when I want to make homemade chicken stock to freeze.
This is also where I go if I need something of good/​great quality in a huge amount like a ginormous can of high quality crushed tomatoes.
It’s getting harder to find the evil stuff that is marmite but they’ve got it here. If you have an English person in your home that digs that stuff on toast you can find it here– along with superior ground lamb, fantastic sausages and a groovy old fashioned bulk candy selection that will make any child straighten up and fly right. Good wine, great cheese, beeeyoootiful produce and lots of things you didn’t know you needed–
If you make the mistake of arriving hungry, you are in for a treat– the guys manning the grill are talented cooks and my sausage was grilled to perfection with a nearby side cart of a huge selection of mustards and quality sauerkraut. This market is a little jewel box and is absolutely authentic old Portland.
Another reviewer advised coming here to shop for your next dinner party and I wholeheartedly agree, but why wait? Go today, I always leave in a good mood. The downside is parking but that’s hardly Sheridan’s fault, and the clerks can be snippy but there’s no ill will and with all that good stuff crammed in there it’s worth it. It’s not hipster angtsy attitude it’s more crotchety grump. The key for me is that if you need help or suggestions these guys will take you to the item you need and answer any question. I love it here.

Sheridan Fruit Company has seen plenty in it’s almost full century of operating, yet it still stands. The supermarket provides a variety of produce, candy, bread, a butcher’s variety of meat, frozen foods, café fare, rows of refrigerated bevrages and so on. It is a genuinely fun place to be, especially since they are unusually gifted in balencing processed and organic food.
I walked in and then walked around. Their aisles are huge. If I lived closer by, I would partake in shopping there more frequently.
In this case, I just got a simple Shirley Temple soda. It was little more than $ 1, and it’s not too commonly found, not in Fred Meyer.
The line was quick and they staffed the store appropreiately.
It is my plan to be back.

We love these small local businesses, independent of national chains and even Portland/​regional multi-​store chains.
Sheridan is a source for Winter seasonal items difficult to find elsewhere. How about bulk, by the pound mincemeat pie filling? They also have bulk candied fruit for fruitcake. It’s common to make fun of fruitcake, but you may find some of the Italian versions amazingly tasty, and with Sheridan’s supplies you can make them at home.
The store has a little bit of everything in a small store. It has similarities to World Foods, but smaller. It’s been owned and operated by an italian family for over 60 years. Excellent bulk, reasonably priced produce and meat. They have a small well priced deli. Could you survive out of Sheridan at luxury on a budget? Yes.
They continually update their offerings. They have a huge variety of wood for smoking and smoked dog bones for the biggest pet.
Sheridan is a small food store that has a lot going on.

Sheridan Fruit company is a one of a kind gem. I’m not even sure if you could find anything outside of Portland that compares.
It’s a charming store with a completely local feel to it. And don’t forget the bulk bins around the corner. For me, that’s the highlight of this store. It’s huge and plentiful and they can serve all your bulk needs.
I’m not sure about the sausage because I don’t eat it but I know this is a big draw here. You just have to try shopping here once. It’s not something I would make my regular grocery but for some specialty items it’s a must see.

Small market in a big city. It is crowded with good stuff and rich cake. They have a lot of staff. Everyone was kosher.

I can’t believe I didn’t find this place earlier! I grew up in Jersey, where there are delis and Italian groceries everywhere, but since moving to Portland, I’ve been having a hard time finding anything similar until now. Sheridan’s has a real deli with respectable meat choices (including Hot Coppa and fancy Prosciutto) all for about average prices. Their meat counter is also impressive with a wide variety of sausages and exotic meats. I even got fresh wings there for $ 1.50/lb!
They also have a variety of Cento products, dried pastas, spices, and an olive bar with my favorite item, peppers shooters. Their produce is a bit more pricey than I normally pay, but it all looked like good quality.
This place really made me feel like I was back in the Philly/​Jersey area, so I will definitely be making the 14 mile trek on a more regular basis.
