Never order the sliders, a better value would be a six pack of white castle cheeseburgers from the freezer aisle(since these beef patties were obviously from the freezer anyway). I can’t understand how the burgers are good and obviously made on premesis, then you can’t just make three small burgers? My dining companions seemed to be okay with the deep fried items they ordered, and yes the fries were good, it just sucks that I had to spend ten bucks on dog food.

Ive been here a couple times with a friend and the both of us have been really happy. The staff is very friendly and attentive, the drink choices are plentiful, the atmosphere is great, until the Dude-Bros come in around 10pm… Their burger is probably one of the best on the east side of Portland I’ve ever had. Extremely well done, juicy, full of flavor, and with some good heft to it. Appetizers are really good, but if you’re looking for life fare, this is not the place; even with appetizers, you get a lot! Even the«wee» sized starters are big! My only complaint this far has been the halibut fish and chips. Yes, it’s a couple of bucks less than most places in Portland, and yes, by all standards, the halibut itself IS really good… but the breading leaves something to be desired after everything is said and done. More of a panko breading than a batter. Breading was a bit more soggy than other places, but hey… some people like the panko. Overall, this place is great!

I went in and was ignored for a half hour. Loud and obnoxious. I left and went to a real pub; the Horse Brass.

This place is getting a high rating because the halibut fish and chips were amazing. I’m new to Portland and I have not been overly impressed with the food scene here. I had been craving fish and chips. The fish here was not overly breaded or oily. It was simply tasty. The fries were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. They wasn’t fresh cut fries but they were still delicious. My husband got shrimp and chips. His shrimp was very good but they only gave him six, what a tease to the palate.

Five star pub. Amazing burger and fries and Greta Irish beer selection. We stumbled in during trivia night and have been meaning to get back. Great atmosphere and an awesome neighborhood bar.

Rose and Thistle is a Scottish pub with a casual pub atmosphere and specializing in UK-style food and drink. We went there tonight especially because they have Boddington’s Cream Ale, which is somewhat hard to find on tap. It’s imported from the UK and not many other places have it. Yes, my friend and I enjoyed our pints of Boddington’s just like I knew we would, then we noticed some of the interesting food items on their menu. We wondered what«Scotch Eggs» were so we asked our waitress. She described them as hard boiled eggs inside of meat sausage, rolled in panko bread crumbs, and deep fried. I also Googled it on my mobile device so we could get an idea of what they looked like. Our waitress, being very informative, went on to let us know that their Scotch Eggs were the«best in the state», and that even people from Scotland thought that theirs were good. OK, we’re convinced! We ordered a couple of them and we thought they were good too.. .and we’re not even from Scotland. So, this was a learning experience tonight.. .we intended to just go have a couple of beers and ended up discovering a new foreign comfort food.

Four of us came in for St. Patty’s tonight and snagged a table almost immediately! Our waitress was pleasant, but most certainly busy. We ordered Guinness’s & scotch eggs! Pretty damn good. Dinner was disappointing. I ordered the the Scott’s Broth soup(I think it was called) which was supposed to be a beef/vegetable barley of sorts but instead she brought me out the tomato soup. I didn’t mention anything because I also like tomato soup and she was super busy — I didn’t want to be a pain in the ars! However, it was very bland. I asked for more crackers and then a person at my table requested salad dressing. She returned with the dressing & no crackers. Our table also ordered the cod fish and chips. Also very bland and greasy. We usually come for patio time which is great, especially with the heat lamps! Overall it’s a decent place, maybe just had an off night with the holiday.

We consider this place our neighborhood pub. We usually come late in the evening. I order scotch; Rebecca orders beer. We each have s Scotch egg. Last night’s was particularly good. Despite the fact almost everyone in the place is much younger, we always feel at home. The service is generally good. Meals are good and generous. The back patio is very comfortable during warm weather and quiet when it is cold. Great neighbors place for a quick meal or a chat over acting. For those with good eyes, the dart board awaits.

What a great little pub. We walked in after dinner and grabbed a seat at the bar and were greeted pleasantly probably about a minute after taking our seat. I ordered a beer and my wife ordered the kilt lifter to pair with her Guinness chocolate cake. I ordered the bread pudding which was out of this world. I love a great sauce and great flavors when it comes to bread pudding. The cake was a little grainy four our taste but I’m sure ppl like it.

The décor in this place is awesome but the rest of the experience did not live up to my first impression. The music was awful, the service was pretty bad and the food was fine– nothing special. We came for dinner(so I can’t comment on the trivia). I got the halibut fish and chips which were good but the fries were mediocre. We would probably have ordered more drinks but the waitress came so infrequently we were done w our food and ready to go. Prob won’t go back… there are better places in town.

I’m definitively a fan of the Rose & Thistle. It’s a pretty good pub all the time, but it’s my go-to spot to watch Portland Timbers games outside of Providence Park and my couch. The most remarkable feature of the space is a secluded back patio that is half covered with two TVs. If you’re okay with sitting near smokers and the weather is bearable, this is the place to sit. Otherwise, there are two main rooms with ample seating indoors. The menu is fairly meat-centric but with some vegetarian options, fairly English but with some Western standards, and mostly grammatically correct but with some spelling errors(you should seriously try the Flanf Steak Salad). They have a decent selection of local and craft beers/ciders. I find that the RAT is generally understaffed, but the servers working do a stellar job. Despite not actually being a partner bar of the Portland Timbers, these guys give 15% off the entire bill to 107ist cardholders and make an excellent spot to watch games. They did an excellent job accommodating the increasingly large and increasingly rowdy crowds leading up to the Timbers’ 2015MLS Cup title. Don’t come in wearing the wrong scarf. All in all, you could do a whole lot worse than the RAT. Depending on what you want, it might just be what you’re looking for.

My wife and I ate here, and both plates we ordered tasted re-heated and old — definitely not fresh. Totally strange as this establishment seems to have pretty good reviews overall, and my first impressions of the place when I walked in were pretty positive. Maybe we were there on an off night, but there are so many great places to eat in Portland that I probably won’t be going back to Rose & Thistle.

Sweet bar with great outdoor courtyard upstairs. Complete with heating, darts and tvs to watch sports(if that’s your thing — can be a bit loud when the Sunday game is on.) Great place to catch up with friends even in cold, wet Portland. You can even bring your dogs! I will say that last night I went with my service animal(who is obviously well behaved and friendly) and I was kind of offended that when I went up the stairs there were 3 people sitting down with a massive bulldog. Instantly they look scared and ordered«woahhh, can you keep your dog away!» They said this because they were scared that THEIR dog was going to hurt my service animal. So it made me uncomfortable because they were taking up a large amount of the courtyard and they were kind of dictating where I could and couldn’t sit. That being said, the waitress was really positive about it and helped me find a table. But I just feel that the establishment shouldn’t allow dogs that are potentially dangerous to be in the bar. I know that as adults, people should be able to make those sorts of calls by themselves. Um duh, if your dog is dangerous, don’t bring them to the bar with other dogs!!! So it just would have been nice if the staff could have mediated and asked the other group with dangerous dog to move away or leave. But love the vibe of this place otherwise!

Great place for some serious pub food! Always delicious food with great beers or mixed drinks to go with it. It has an old pub feel, and a fairly cheap menu. It’s the closest thing to Scotland you will find in the area.

The atmosphere was great, waitress was awesome and very friendly. We had the fish and chips, it was the best I’ve ever had. The fish was Juicy, not dry and the out side was nice and crispy. The drinks were nice and stiff! We definitely will be coming back.

This place is in my top 5 favorite Portland bars! Their patio is large and such a chill hangout. If you want to grab a couple of drinks with your buddies and end with a good night, this is the spot. Everyone is so mellow and laid back; you never run into any obnoxious/drunk customers. The food is pretty good. They have tvs inside and outside so it’s a good spot to watch sports.

Scotch egg. «Yeah!» I say, really excited for some reason«I’ll have a shot of rum too! And I’ll have the burger and my wife will have the pork sliders and keep that rum a-flowing! Also. While we wait could I try the… Scotch egg!» I smile at my wife, like I’m some kind of dashing explorer who just ordered the monkey eye kabob, and she just kind of looks at me funny. I look back at her. Now I’m kind of worried. «What’s a Scotch egg?» she says. I bluff«well they take this egg, see? And they cover it with stuff and then cook it. I think I saw chef Ramsay make it one time» she raises her eyebrows. Impressed? Probably. So the Scotch egg comes to the table, and I immediately get nervous because I’m pretty sure I heard a ding coming from the kitchen right before it came out. Do you know what I mean when I say that? Like the ding you hear from your own kitchen when your tea water is all hot, or your cup-o-ramen is loose and ready for eating? So there I am, all munching on this Scotch egg, dipping it into the sauce stuff they brought with it(hair conditioner?) and I think… I should start taking better care of myself.

The atmosphere is typical of an Irish or Scottish pub(in this case Scottish). Very casual, very chill, cozy place. The bar is a bit on the small side, but they have plenty of beers on tap with a wide variety of bigger name beers and craft brews as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful with ordering. I was a first timer so I was really intrigued with the menu items. I made a decision and selected the Highland Fling which apparently is a Scottish dish. It was very good! I wish I had more of a stomach to finish eating all of it. I saved more of the room for beer.

Rose and Thislte is my one of my favorite pubs in my area(NE). I love the patio in the back of the pub — it is great even during winter months as they have heaters. The food is very good with some standard pub favorites, food comes out hot and in a timely fashion. I usually order from the bar and then go sit down so service is speedy(of course depending on how busy they are). Wait staff are friendly and usually timely — there have been just a few times when there was a bit of a wait for drinks however the place was busy. Prices are comparable to other pubs in the area. If you are with others and can agree on a beer, pitchers are cheap!

We went on a Sunday afternoon and there were 3 people at the bar. The server was present and courteous. The fish & chips weren’t that great, tasted like previously frozen and I’m sure it is considering it’s a bar not a restaurant, portions were large — tons of fries. I would compare the ambiance to a Cheerful Tortoise or Kingston(west side(’til I die)). This place must be a neighborhood bar, I can’t image anyone driving out of their way to come here.

Looking for a patio to have a few drinks? Rose and Thistle is a great place to sit for awhile and enjoy a few beers. There were dogs at this place as well, so bring your dogs if you have any. My review is a little lackluster, which correlates with the food and service. It was a beautiful sunny day, I think many others had the same in mind. We sat down, and weren’t acknowledged for awhile. Sometimes, it’s nice just to get a hello, and a couple of menus instead of being ignored. We ordered the fish ‘n chips and a burger. The fish ‘n chips were pretty greasy, and the fries limp and dejected. The burger I ordered medium, was overly well done. «You can’t always get what you want» RS I am starting to sound like a whiny brat, I know. Maybe next time, I’ll have a better review!

This place has good beer and typical pub food. The outdoor area is nice in the sure but it can get smoky. There’s plenty of seating which is nice, I’ve always had a good time here. Lots of beers on tap too!

What a fantastic deck out back! Talk about deceiving! This place is soo much bigger than you can tell from the street. I’d been hearing about this place for years and couldn’t figure out the hype. Now I know… I finally got to experience this restaurant for a friend’s birthday. The deck is huge, so it easily fit all 20 of us. I ordered my standby, the«strips & chips»(chicken strips and fries) and a Guinness. No, not very daring, but I doubted they could go wrong(they didn’t) I was more there for the beer and people than dinner. Which is not to say the food everyone else ordered didn’t also look wonderful. It’s not chi-chi, it’s tasty Scottish(and American) pub fare. If I lived closer, I’d walk over a couple times a week in the summer, just to have a beer out back. I can’t say that I know of another Scottish pub in the area(or anywhere in Portland, for that matter), so this is a unique gem.
