I got a cut and drastic color today with Jeramiah. HE IS AMAZING!!! It was my first time in and I love the whole experience at Red Velvet Parlour. Super talented stylists, unique vibe, good music… I can’t see going anyplace else.
I had sent Jeramiah a picture of the color I was after. Went from brownish whatever dull natural color to an ashy silvery lavender. He gave an excellent consultation ahead of time and then he even discussed the color technique with other stylists in the days leading up to my visit. End result is incredible, textured, gorgeous, and way better than I could have imagined. Went with the cut he recommended and I love it! I have never left a salon more impressed than I did today.

Been getting my hair cut with Erin for 8 years… Always great! Super knowledgeable. Love the vibe in the salon.

We had been traveling around Oregon and after our hiking and adventures from the coast, to the mountains, to the high desert and back, we needed haircuts to feel a bit more prim for city life. I found the Red Velvet Parlour on Unilocal when trying to find a place that was good a cutting curly hair. I booked the appointment for my partner, who is mixed, and has curly hair, short cut. Most people don’t know how to finesse it and use the buzzer too quickly. This usually results in a not very stylized cookie cut short cut — and often times too masculine.
But Mary was our savior!!! She was great with her scissors! She was sweet and fun to chat with for us visitors. She had a great sense of style (of her own) and even for my partners new-​do.
I returned again a few days later to get my own hair trimmed and bangs re-​shaped :)
Mary has over 17 years of experience, super down to earth, and completely listens and gives advice about maintaining and styling. I would totally recommend seeing her for curly, straight, or wavy — she gets it.

My boyfriend and I have been going to Erin for the last five months and it was best decision we’ve made in a long time! She listens and give us exactly what we ask for. We give her something new every time and she works her Magic! We highly recommend her to everyone and anyone! The salon is very friendly and clean.

I received a beautiful cut from Amy Jean this week. It’s exactly what I wanted (and asked for). Full, bouncy, and SO manageable. I’m having a hard time doing a polished look for my hair in the morning because it looks amazing as bedhead. Kidding. Except about how good it looks without any effort. Amy is a great listener and is great at explaining her work without getting too technical. Thanks for everything, Amy. I’ll be back.

I have been getting my haircut at the Red Velvet Parlour by stylist Amy Williams for over a year. She is a great stylist and does a great job. I know that my hair is short, but I’ve seen what she can do styling for women and men with longer hair.

After a decade of trusting no one but myself to cut my hair, I started seeing Erin way back in 2006. She always knows what I want better than I can explain, and I have never been disappointed! She’s supported my hair through short and long, platinum and mousey-​brown, and always leaves me feeling more confident and happy about my current ‘do than I could have imagined. Now she’s doing more and more coloring as well and it’s kick-​ass. I would recommend Erin to anyone and everyone!

Just got an amazing haircut from Erin at Red Velvet. She listened to what I wanted and was able to adapt the style I wanted to my fine hair and my inability to spend more than a few minutes on my hair every day. It’s the best haircut I’ve had in years, and my hair looks great very little effort. Also she’s a lovely person to spend an hour with.

I have been coming here for years. Great stylists who do a good job. They all work together so if you have a problem and your stylist is not there they cover for them. This is a great team!

I have been seeing Erin for my hair for several years now, and followed her to this salon when she moved on from her last job. I adore Erin and she does a fantastic job with my hair — she’s been very supportive of my inability to decide if I want long or short hair and was great about my short flirtation with adding tinsel and color to my hair. :) Now that I’ve moved away from Portland to Seattle for work, I still come and see Erin whenever I can on weekends when I’m visiting family in the area. She’s very accommodating to make sure I can get in on a Sunday morning if I need it! The location is also very nice, warm and comfortable, very nicely decorated, with some interesting and fun product for sale. Fits in great with the SE Hawthorne atmosphere. :)

My daughter (15) has been going to Amy since 2009. We followed her here from her previous salon.
She listens, she’s patient, and she gives an amazing cut & style everytime!

I came in here a month and a half or so ago with a groupon deal and a mess that was my hair. I haven’t had a haircut in about 7 months, so it was looking pretty bad. Thankfully, Toni turned my hair into fab again!
I wanted a low maintenance and cute haircut, so I decided to get a pixie cut. You see, my hair is not the easiest to style and cut. It’s dry, thick, wavy, and poofy. However, she still managed to turn my hair from absolute mess into cuteness. I love my hair so much and it’s growing out quite nicely. I got so many compliments!
I will definitely be back!

I have been a Client of Liz, the Owner, for seven years. I have been to many hair salons over the years and this is the perfect salon with an edgy, boudoir style and awesome service. I came to Toni with a serious mess on my head. I’d been coloring my own hair, hadn’t had a haircut since before Burningman and had a band of brassy gold above my roots. She sat me down and gave me the haircut that I initially wanted, then got me talking about where the color was going. The next day we lifted and toned my yellow blonde to the pale ash I’d been looking for and put in the denim blue streaks that I had been dreaming of for months. The blue is lasting beautifully thanks to Toni’s care instructions and I’ve got adorable wash & wear hair! Make an appointment, this woman can do magic.

Erin turned with my girlfriend’s HAIR DON’T into a HAIR DO! Now we can been seen in public again! THANK YOU!

So I found this coupon in the Willamette Weekly for the Red Velvet Parlour for 20% off any service. It did NOT have an expiration date. What a deal!!! Right?! …WRONG!
So I didn’t need a haircut right there and then, so I waited like a month to use it (remember, no expiration date!) So I waltzed in on a quiet Sunday afternoon, no customers were there. There were 2 stylists chatting and eating and one other with her legs up on a station reading a magazine.
I just wanted a quick trim! And the 2 girls chatting were like, ummmm we personally can’t take this coupon but maybe some other stylist can some other day, in the most condescending, PRETENTIOUS way possible!
Wait what?! I told them but there’s no expiration date, its only from like a month ago! And they said that they didn’t want to take it but maybe one of the newer stylists would. FOR REAL? Too good for my coupon? They didn’t even have 1 customer in that place. My haircut would of taken like 20 minutes too. I’m seriously so offended at their pretentious attitude.
Sorry Red Velvet, but those girls were awful and totally ruined my view of y’all…

I think I’m ready to write this review after a considerable time to cool down. (3 weeks later)
I am not one to be too picky about my haircuts. I realize hair grows back and there’s potential in every cut. However, this is the worst haircut I’ve ever received. It’s not at all what I was asking for or what I wanted. I wanted an A-​line bob, and it doesn’t dip in the front at all and is MUCH shorter than I would ever want. The stylist, Toni, also «thinned» my hair out an incredible amount, which I think was excessive. This has left me with an extremely short and quite layered hairstyle that I hate. It’s so bad that I don’t even style it anymore I just pin it up, I’m just waiting until it grows back to get it fixed.
I will accept that part of the problem is that I am not as assertive as I should be, but stylists should listen to customers at the same time. Listen when I mention that it looks quite short after the first few snips and don’t cut it even shorter. I don’t feel as if I was being heard, or that the stylist listened to what I asked for, and if she was not sure to ask for clarification.
I don’t like to admit that something as trivial as a haircut brought me to tears, but I barely made it to my car before losing composure. I tried to give it a few days and see if I warmed up to it, but I don’t even like looking at it it’s so bad.
As for the salon, each stylist handles their own clients which means that she was getting phone calls during the haircut and then went outside to schedule. I felt as though this was unprofessional.

I got a badly-​needed haircut while visiting PDX for a weekend.
The Salon: Absolutely charming. It has a classy retro boudoir feel to it.
I glanced at the products they sold and was impressed at the quality of companies they choose to to business with.
The haircut:
Toni & I talked briefly about what I wanted, the necessary features in my haircut and what I needed it to do.
She gave me EXACTLY what I was looking for.
Not only did I get a top-​notch cut that looks good rolling out of bed with minimal effort, but I can still do the cute pinup hair I like to do when going out.
She talked me through the process, was friendly and professional… no surprises!
I highly recommend this salon, and highly recommend Toni Menconi for your hair cut & styling needs!

i’m writing this review for toni menconi who is now working at the velvet parlour.
toni is fucking amazing. i don’t even want to write her a good review b/​c then all of you are going to hog her up and she wont be able to fit me in any more.
now mind you, i’m hair traumatized. if have a wild mop of curls that only one other person in my entire life besides toni has known what to do with. i spent years wearing it down to my waist, all one length and envying everyone with their cute little stylish cuts.
well, when toni cut my hair i just told her to make it look nice. she started snipping and the hair started flying. when she was done i knew i liked my hair cut but i didn’t know how much i liked it until each new day had passed. the day after my hair cut i noticed all the clever little curls and twists she made. then after that i saw what my hair did in the rain. usually when it rains my hair looks like the dog after it runs away for a day or so. after toni cut my hair and it rained my hair looked like some fashionable curly, sassy, well mannered thing that would never belong to me.
toni’s hair cut makes me look fashionable, cool and sophisticated. i don’t even have to do anything to it. she knows exactly what to do with your hair and she’s a really fun, good hearted person. i just don’t know how else to praise her. go ahead and get a hair cut from her but please don’t hog her up. the rest of us want to look good too.
