Went in to get oil changed and was offered a great deal cheaper then doing it myself, they didn’t go over my car with the intent of finding problems to scare me into getting it fixed right away! They did mention some issues that I should consider, worn tires, bushings etcc. but it was very casual and sincere. I’d recommend this business to anyone! Also, great coffee!

These guys are wonderful… super friendly and helpful. Their business model is based on taking care of their customers with excellent work and reasonable prices. The customer then in turn, will return with future business and also tell all their friends about them. It’s a crazy concept called, customer service and these guys have this is spades. I highly recommend them.

Awesome people. They were helpful and genuine, and I paid less than the quoted price! Highly recommend.

Excellent shop. Always go here to change oil and if there any other issue they take care of it. Never was overcharged or pushed to have unnecessary repairs done. Occasionally they get too busy and its difficult to have your case serviced.

These guys are the best. Tired of paying top dollar for shoddy work. Glad I found them! Great work, great prices!

I found JC and ANGIE when I was RUNNING AWAY from a horrible previous mechanic. My friends heard my horror story and told me to go to HOOKSET. The owners here appreciate and drive Subaru’s like me so I definitely trust them to work on mine.
They have their customer service DOWN. As a ‘young lady’ it can be nerve wrecking to enter a new mechanics office. But here you are greeted by a very sweet couple who have set up their waiting area with YOU in mind. Expect to find coffee candy and cookies.
Finally, some places will hammer you to get all the fixes they recommend to get your car in mint condition. Here they are much more understanding about the deals and exceptions we all make with our cars. «How well do you want your car to run» is a question I can work out with these guys. I am so glad to have found them.

I really felt like they had my best interest in mind. Refreshingly different experience compared to typical auto mechanic shops. Gave me a free estimate and recommended I hold off on repairs.

We came here with AC problems with the VW and were taken care of in a respectful manner, they even told us of the discount online. We liked this place and owner JC so much we came here again to have a seal replaced in the Jeep. They seem to want to help with genuine concern for you.
Highly recommended and I’ll be back when the work is just too much to do myself.

We have been coming here for 2 years now. We drive all the way from Lincoln City. ANGIE is the best. She is attentive, the whole staff made sure I knew what was wrong with my car and wanted me to feel safe and taken care of. I’ve watched these guys tell people to hold off on getting jobs done, simply because that wasn’t the problem. I love these guys and will keep coming back. We will be back. No matter where we drive from.

Short Version: Ridiculously honest and friendly service. Mind blown.
In January I went into a Hyundai dealer to look at my engine which was running really rough and I assumed something awful. Turned out to be an oil change (apparently the jiffy lube uses crappy oil– i’ll get to that). They also told me I needed brake work that would be around $ 250
I saw the Hookset Groupon for brakes and the good reviews, so I bought it and took it in. I was a little early, everyone was eating lunch, but they were really friendly and said they’d get to it as soon as their done eating.
30 minutes later, JC calls and says come back over.
Then he proceeded to explain to me there was nothing to do. The brakes were fine. He was surprised that I’d been told I needed brake service. So I told him the story above. He said that I must have had crappy oil for that to have happened. He suggested I get their oil change groupon (4 changes for $ 50!) and ask Groupon to refund the other one. And if they didn’t, he’d still honor it when I did eventually need brakes. He also said that everything else looked really good, so no charge.
I felt bad so I asked for the cabin filter to be replaced. At least I’d be able to pay them for some of their time. He had a guy run across the street, buy the right filter and replaced it at cost.
Their honesty and integrity is unparalleled in my 35 years of owning a car I’m actually looking forward to my next oil change.

Angie was great! I scheduled a brake job thinking I needed new brakes (miles on my car and a change in pedal pressure made me think so). In the end I didn’t need new brakes. Angie willingly took me into the shop to show me that I had more than 50% still left on my pads.
She gave me a quote to fix my a/​c, and we went through things I MAY need due to the mileage I’ve hit. She informed me of certain items special to my car (diesel) that won’t be worth the preventative maintenance until an issue arises due to cost of the item (i.e. my diesel uses glow plugs not spark plugs and they run $ 100 each). GOOD TO KNOW!
Update — scheduled my a/​c work. It took at little longer than they had expected due to there being 3 options for a condensers for my VW. Those kinds of things can sometimes not be avoided. Throughout it all they were very communicative about the delays!

I went with my girlfriend to pick up her car from Hookset. The owner, Angie, was very knowledgeable and friendly. The staff also seems great. I have a sense they are honest people doing good work.

I drive to Hookset Automotive from Lincoln City to have my van serviced. The customer service is the best I’ve seen in town and their quality of service is top notch. I would highly recommend them over anyplace else in town.

Completely ludicrous behavior and exceptionally poor customer service.
After waiting a week for the oil change appointment I made, the morning I arrived on my own jam packed day, I was REFUSED service solely on the fact I declined to give my home address. The man (who’s name I did not get) immediately got huffy with me and escalated the situation, having no respect for my privacy rights. As soon as I said the words «my right», he kept repeating it over and over and escalating the situation, ultimately saying they wouldn’t want me as a customer.
Mind you the service was pre-​paid and I had no problem giving my phone number and license plate.
I eventually agreed to give my address because the whole situation was completely ludicrous and I had already wasted an hour of my time and waited a week (not to mention my car was out of oil). He calmed a little and reluctantly agreed to do the service. But then as he took my address, he just kept making jabs about the situation and said they need my address to contact me if something went wrong (really, are you going to knock on my door!?? — no I didn’t say that). But I did say that I didn’t see how it was relevant if he had my phone number. As soon as I said that he freaked out again and refused the service for good.
I had high hopes because the girl who made my appointment a week prior was nice and helpful. But this guy’s irrational and unserving behavior really threw a wrench in my very busy & already stressful day. I was of course fuming by then and sadly see a theme with this kind of self righteous, smug customer service here in Portland.
Needless to say — I received high quality, super duper fast and friendly service WITHOUT a home address at the Jiffy Lube on 39^th & Hawthorne (a privately owned franchise). The staff there was equally blown away by my experience at Hookset… which was supposedly a ‘family run business’.

Hookset is a 25 minute drive for me but they’re definitely worth it! They’re really honest and friendly and they always have my car finished exactly on time. I recommend their oil change Groupon; it’s an excellent deal. Thanks guys!

I love this place. Okay. I’m a girl and despise having to go to the mechanic. I actually know (or like to find out) a little bit about cars and cost of parts. It almost never fails that other mechanics try and charge too much or push me into buying services and parts I don’t need. So when my roommate (a female as well) told me she went to hookset and they advised her on what she didn’t need to do and what was necessary and that she didn’t once feel pressured, I was sold.
I brought my SO’s car in and they not only offered me a cheap deal for diagnosis, they even said if I had extra time we could be away from it that they wouldn’t even charge us for after the first hour. They figured out a course of action and advised us. That time, we decided the cost wasn’t worth it.
When I noticed my Cabrio having issues going up hills, I took it in to them. They did a swift job finding the problems and even then gave me options and advice that was really helpful and not pressuring me. Even advising me against a service I asked about that wasn’t necessary.
The mechanics are friendly and helpful and the office is nice and cool. They even brought my SO a popsicle! Cost was no more than average for the job and for the skill and consideration these guys put into their work, it’s well worth it.

I have enjoyed coming to Hookset twice now for a full service oil change. My first visit involved me asking a lot of questions about getting a tune up because I had not had one since my free tune ups expired with the dealer. I was impressed with the information and advice I was given by Adam. I ended up not needing a tune up and instead was given a plan in order of importance for what things I needed to address to take care of my Scion Xd 2008. They were open to referring me to other places for certain parts and gave me tips on ways to save money.
Hookset is a bit far away from my home but I have been looking for a local place that I can trust. As a woman I have experienced many tactics from automotive places to get more money out of me by using certain terms about safety & over explaining car mechanics so I feel overwhelmed. I am happy to have found Hookset and recommend it to others.

It is so refreshing to find a non-​pretentious mechanic like they have at Hookset Automotive. They have been very fair at explaining what is wrong with our (my wife and my) car without making us feel like an idiot. They are very thorough and explain everything to you, even take you to the back and show you the part that is causing trouble. JC and the whole crew are really personable and will tell you what should be fixed and how imperative it is, which is great for people like me who can’t afford to replace everything right away. They understand people aren’t made of money and will be honest about how a problem might affect the rest of your car and how long you can last without repairing it and how dangerous (or not) it might be to go without repairs.
Aside from their honesty, the «lounge» area is very comfortable. It’s a laid back, garage apartment feel. They always offer to turn on the large TV while you sit in a nice, comfortable recliner if you are waiting for repairs to be made. There is coffee, sometimes doughnuts, and you can even play Atari! They also have wifi. If conversation is more your thing JC and his wife will happily participate in playful banter with you, they are like instant friends! We talked for over an hour and the time just flew away. I wanted to keep hanging out to talk even after the repairs were finished.
We make the 35 minute drive to Hookset and won’t go anywhere else in Portland for our auto repair/​maintenance needs.

I’d been going to them for two years, and spent a lot of money in their shop, and on my last visit my car was keyed in the lot. Both sides. Front to back. They said they thought I had brought it to them in this state which is entirely false, yet somehow didn’t think it was worth brining it up to me when I came back to pick up my car. Thinking back now I think they were just hoping that if they didn’t say something then it would go away. The owner said not to worry and he’d take care of it. I’ve since followed up with two phone calls and they keep brushing me off. I most certainly won’t return and don’t recommend their service.
A week or so after they did finally send me a text, rather than call, saying they weren’t responsible for what happened in their lot and they wouldn’t cover it. Now I have to drive around with giant scratches up and down both sides of my car, and there is no remorse coming from them whatsoever even though I often used their service.

Truly awful service from a dishonest bunch of people.
I brought my new (old) truck here and was excited by the enthusiasm of the owner, JC who said he would give me a deal because he liked my vehicle. However, that was quickly replaced by the lack of communication, overcharging, and dishonesty. To say these guys are incompetent is an understatement.
They couldn’t diagnose the problem so did over 700 dollars in «service» to diagnose and install something that wasn’t needed. I found and delivered the part because they said it was extra if they found it, they spent 2+ weeks installing and when I picked it up and it still had the same issue. I brought it back and they performed a 300 dollar «tune up» which didn’t even involve checking the oil (which was dangerously low, I found out) and didn’t think to run it by me. FYI, a tune up involved a new rotor and some new spark plugs and wires. That’s it!
Needless to say, they didn’t find the problem and it had the same issue the next day. Because they couldn’t fix it the first 2 times I didn’t care to bring it back. I found and fixed the burned out wire that was causing the problem the next day. It turns out that was the issue the whole time. You’d think they would have seen a bright red wire with a burned out black mark in the center hanging down from the middle of the alternator and put 2 and 2 together but apparently not. I had to learn the hard way. Don’t make the same mistake.
I left out all the parts about them not returning calls for days on end or promising it to be done in a day and not hearing back for a week. When I inquired why it cost so much for all of the services he said «I wanna make money on this project, not just a little money.» Who says that to a customer?
After I asked a neighboring parts shops about their reputation they said «oh, they’re a racket, everyone gets burned by them.» Now I know.
I’ll never get my money back but maybe I can help others not to make this same mistake.
