The shop owners asked me to leave my shopping bag at the front desk, which is understandable. Then, they insisted I also leave my «other bag.» I pointed at my average-sized shoulder bag and said«this is my purse.» They insisted that I could still fit a book in there and had to leave it with them, so I left the store without shopping. I think treating every customer as a likely thief is bad business and I didn’t feel welcome there.

Hawthorne Boulevard Books is an adorable often-overlooked bookstore right in the middle of Hawthorne. Stop in and chat with the friendly owners. Mostly used, old, antique books, it’s a great place to browse shelves of musty books that look beautiful. I’m sure if you know about books you’ll find lots of rare ones here. A neighborhood favorite of mine.

So I had never been by here when this bookstore was open, until today! Owned by a cute older couple, this place has been in business for 20 years. The have a lot of rare and unique books. Seems like a good place to buy a present for a dad or scholarly friend. Try to stop by sometime — they really are super cute owners — open from 11 to 5 Wednesday through Saturday.
