Hasenpfeffer Farm

The rest of the world may finally be «going green» but we in here Oregon have been green from head to toe for decades. Curbside recycling, cloth bags at the grocery store, organic produce from the farmers’ market. Puh-​lease, tell me something I don’t already know.
Hasenpfeffer Farm has schooled me. This pocket farm occupies a double lot right in the middle of the city. I won’t waste words on their splendid u-​pick options (berries, peaches, tomatoes) and instead describe how they are pushing Green well into Viridian.
The rabbits from which the farm takes its name provide manure for the garden — and meat for your table. Sustainably raised and humanely harvested, the bunny kill area isn’t for weak stomachs but it’s no Watership Down either.
In fact, a 30-​minute orientation, a pair of elbow-​length rubber gloves, and the appropriate instrument are all you need to take the next step in sustainable sustenance. You’ll have no questions about the origin and quality of your meat, and you’ll find out if you’ve got what it takes to survive peak oil/​mega-​earthquake/​2009 Depression. Bring your own cooler and ice packs for the drive… er, bike ride home.
