Happy Knits

Great selection of local yarns that have limited availability elsewhere. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. They were available to answer any questions and engaged in conversation. Lovely shop all around. I left feeling happy!

I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit for some time now but never knew where to start and self-​teaching was not working. My friend that frequents this shop recommended me to Annette’s Knitting 101 classes and I cannot say enough good things about it! I felt a bit out of place when I first walked in, and as other reviewers have mentioned, it did feel very clique-​y. But after starting my lessons and spending time with the amazing group of knitters that come in on Tuesday nights for open knit nights, I feel like one of the crowd.
I can’t say enough good things about the lessons themselves! In just 4 lessons I’ve knit things that I’ve always thought were impossible! And Annette is incredible. I get super nervous when starting new things, and she was patient and encouraging even though I would be on the brink of a meltdown. I’m so happy I got pointed in the direction of Happy Knits!

One of my favorite yarn shops in Portland. Street parking is easy to find, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and they carry a great variety of yarn I can’t find at Twisted.

A wonderful selection of fine yarns and every time I’ve come in with a question about how to do something (which is every time I’ve come in) they have taken the time to look at my pattern and walk me through the steps, even looking up the pattern to see if there have been any mistakes made. How nice!

Such an awesome LYS. There are plethora of choices in color and fibers. The staff is very friendly. There is a knit night on Tuesdays from six to eight.

In my opinion, this is the worst yarn store in Portland.
I have only visited Happy Knits on two occasions and only purchased once but will never do either again. The selection is not particularly extensive, the prices are not particularly good and the staff is terrible — unconcerned and ill-​informed. On top of this, they have a no refund/​no return policy. This is fine when the error is on the part of the buyer but needs to be mitigated when due to misinformation from the staff.
If one chooses to shop here, remember that it is buyer beware so be on guard. I prefer a less adversarial relationship with vendors.

This is my go to LYS. Staffmembers are extremely approachable and knowledgeable! The store is very well stocked with the yarns knitters and crocheters need most.

I went in to get some new knitting needles after being told from another knitting shop not too far away that they may have what I’m looking for. However the first time I visited the store I was a bit put off by the employees.
The lady in front of me in line was having a nice pleasant conversation with the cashier and I was expecting something similar when it was my turn. But instead I got short rude answers to my questions and no other conversation then that. It was like my money and business was less valuable? I’m not sure.
The second time I went back I walked in the door and no one even greeting or acknowledged me and I was the only one in the store. so I just left because I had questions, I wasn’t intending on buying anything. I probably wont go back.

Be careful if ordering online. I spent $ 200 on Madtosh and was very disappointed that the skeins ordered in multiples were not even a close match. I will need to break the pairs up and find another project as they are too different.

I really like this store and I want to give it more stars except for one employee with red hair and misplaced nose-​ring who was absolutely horrible to deal with! We spent over $ 300 in the store buying yarns of different weights and asking questions about best patterns, etc. This redhead girl was very rude to us and acted very bothered to help us. It was very odd as when other customers came in she would act much nicer when she recognized them. She kept zipping into the classroom to pull down her hair and laugh with her friends but then would come «help“us for a minute or 2… and she was a nightmare!
the other staff were pleasant and helpful, especially the French woman, and of course the dog was great! I found the prices much lower than the yarn stores in California so I enjoyed that! Thanks Happy Knits, I just hope the next time I visit you, redhead weirdo isn’t working!

Went in here for the second time, albeit it had been a few years. Although the selection is a bit smaller than other shops, it was set up nicely. I love all the samples they have with mostly free patterns attached. The staff is friendly, helpful and not at all overwhelming. I definitely will be back.

I love this place. They have a great selection of yarn and needles! Several staff members have been very sweet and helpful to me. Good yarn is expensive, but so so worth it. I’d definitely recommend this place!

I love Happy Knits! I shop online with them also. They carry tons of Madelentosh which is my most favorite yarn! This is a great place to visit if your ever in Portland!

Took a break from a conference and walked in here. Immediately helped out, nice selection, good light to see the yarns.
Owner and staffer gave me suggestions for other stops while in town. So, nice to stranger and above and beyond. Thanks!

I used to own my own yarnshop in Portland… about a million years ago… called Spindleshanks, so I know yarn shops. I just found Happy Knits, kind of by accident, and couldn’t be more impressed. The variety of yarns is interesting, not the usual suspects, but lots of really wonderful, small yarn companies are represented, along with some more established brands like Manos de Uruguay. What lovely things they have here!
Annetta, who is an owner, was working, and she was wonderful and helpful. The shop is bright & colorful, and much bigger than it appears from the street view. Really delightful. I bought a wonderful silk and merino blend yarn to make a scarf with. I can’t wait to go back.

I would like HK staffers to know you are good at what you do… knitting! This is a bright store filled with great fiber and talented staff (and their pets). I have needed assistance and have ALWAYS received «hands-​down» good service. :)
The shop is well stocked and willing to order your knit needs. It also provides ample space to come in and get your knit on, with a large formal table for 10+ folks in a class and more comfortable seating (sofa and chairs) w/​a fire place. There is a lovely children’s nook to occupy to interest of wee ones while you poke around or get a question answered.
I vote to come check them out, say for the Yarn Crawl!

My sister got me a gift card to Happy Knits and the reason she chose Happy Knits is because of the wonderful, helpful staff. I was so impressed with the selection of yarn and the attitude of the staff members. I am a beginner and I had a lot of questions. They took their time and answered all of my questions. I will be back for all of my knitting/​crochet needs.

Awesome selection, beautiful modern store that is bright and cheery. Emma was awesome and a fantastic teacher as well. Average prices, but classes were very reasonable. Would highly recommend this store for beginners or advanced!

This is the only yarn store I have found that consistently has very high quality, yet simple, natural yarn in NORMAL COLORS and in quantities enough to knit sweaters. There is no novelty stuff here to tempt me, and few strange colors for to settle for. Until this place, I ended up settling for weird stuff too often. But here, there is no danger of that because they only have nice yarn. So now I have UFOs in beige, gray, and red instead of fuchsia, purple, and turquoise, which is an improvement.
Oh, and the friendly staff, wood stove, and playroom in the back are great!
