Before locals is a rather competent breakfast place. It consists of the food that a typical American diner has. The value tends to be good, yet it is not too notable. Shockingly inexpensive diner breakfasts have a tendency to be around all so copiously. There is more of a blue collar feel to it since it is east of Interstate-205. President Obama’s visit to this in the past produced a small yearning in me to embark on a visit to the place. I was seated in a few shakes of a lamb’s tail upon entrance. I ordered the 1 – 4 special. After about ten minutes, it arrived on my table. The biscuits and gravy had a good taste. The eggs, hash browns and hamburger patty all were quite worthwhile as well. Some items at a similar price allow one to include pancakes on the side, a fiery value. I was pleased, as I got lots of food for around ten dollars, though I occasionally see better. Few things in life are too good to be true after all, yet even highly esteemed diner fare tends to usually not have a pronounced chef and, or highly unique recipes, as those entities do tend to focus on dinner instead. An above average demeanor describes Gateway Breakfast House.

First of all: there is gravy, and then there is gravy! I had the 1−2−3−4 with has browns, German sausage, 2 eggs poached, hash browns, and biscuit & gravy. Their country gravy is perfect. Perfect creaminess, perfect pepper, sausage, flour ratio. And the flour was cooked out — didn’t have that tinny taste from being in a hurry and messing up the roux. German sausage was good sized, perfectly split and grilled, hash browns crispy & flavorful. And the poached eggs were perfect as well; right in the middle, yolks golden lava, whites cooked. Service was friendly, yet efficient. They won’t spend a lot of time chatting because they are ALWAYS moving. Every time I have been by it has been out the door. This morning o got lucky! Well done! I recommend this to everyone!

Went here for brunch with a friend. We went through what appeared to be a very long waitlist pretty quickly. The portions were great. Their French Toast was average, but the rest of the food was very good! Would come back.

Fun little hole-in-the-wall. First comes food, and that’s great! Large portions, very tasty, very inexpensive. Second comes service, and that was great, too. Friendly, fun, fast. A very good bet for a big breakfast! Oh… and the biggest slices of meaty bacon I have ever seen — some around 2″ wide.

OMG… BIGAZZZ Pancake alert. This place is small with incredible food and down home service. So, if being called«honey» or «sweetie» bothers you, this isn’t the place for you. I ordered the Chicken Fried steak with 3 eggs and pancakes and I couldn’t finish it all, there was so much food, the portions are HUGE and I’m not exaggerating. The Breakfast House is definitely in my top two breakfast spots. «I’ll be back!»

The food was fab, the coffee hot, this is definitely a good place to go for great food selection and an unrushed easy going atmosphere…

This was the first place we went to after landing in Portland for the first time. This establishment has a sign that says«if you are grouchy, irritable or just plain me mean there will be a $ 10 charge for putting up with you.» Ironically when I asked on the status of our food after waiting 45 min and watching multiple people who came after us eat and leave. I was responded to with an attitude as if I was being unreasonable. A few min later they come to inform us that the kitchen lost the ticket. Makes me wonder how long we would have been sitting if I didn’t ask. But then again I’m from Texas so southern hospitality might have me spoiled.

How have I not written a review for GBH before now?! This place is, hands-down, THEBEST breakfast spot in Portland. Exclamation point. The end. Case closed. * Servings? Massive. * Cooking? To perfection. * Service? Attentive. * Prices? Cheap and fair. * Parking? Limited. * Wait Times? Ridiculous. Get there early. * Soda? Pepsi products. * Décor? Like Mel’s Diner from the old«Alice» sitcom, GBH is homey and unpretentious. The customers are working class, blue-collar, regular, real people. If you’re looking for cloth napkins and ambient music, keep moving, yer Majesty. This is a BREAKFASTJOINT and ITLOOKSLIKE a breakfast joint.

Eh, it had good reviews to… Oh well, what are ya going to do. The inside looks like a mobile home trailer. Not to mention the obvious rain damage in the ceiling or the fact that the parking lot is full of water, or the fact that the owner or work or whatever wanted to dust the walls with a floor mop which is right near the kitchen. Okay the kitchen you can see it right when you walk in it’s filthy & disgusting I can’t believe these people are even open! Okay the service is slow we had to ask for refills on your coffee. The food is kind of bland it’s not really that impressive. I had the farmer’s daughter omelette it was very greasy. The wife had the very cheese omelette it wasn’t impressive. Don’t waste your time sorry.

Great food, however it’s very small and some of the staff are terribly rude. Heard the lady at the front tell the cook«I’m about to slap this b***h» because my friend was just asking if the to-go containers on the counter were ours. I don’t support that type of customer service.

You may have to wait. Be Patient! You will be happy! The place was busy busy busy and the staff were ONPOINT! I heard being a wait person in a restaurant is more stressful than being a neurosurgeon, if thats true the guy and girl team working the floor that day are artists of the craft. I wish i had there names to give them proper credit.(2÷21÷2016 Sunday morning) Not to be forgotten the folks working in the kitchen, crushing it! I ordered one of everything and it was all cooked perfectly. Not sure how I am going to find a better breakfast restaurant, since I’ll already be eating at Gateway.

If you are looking for a great diner experience, you should try the Gateway Breakfast House. The food is very inexpensive and the portions are HUGE. I ordered the bacon & cheese omelette and I swear they must have used at least 8 eggs to make it AND it was packed full of cheese and bacon! It came with two HUGE dinner plate sized pancakes. I never have to ask for a to go box at breakfast but I did here. I could only eat half of the omelette and left most of the pancakes. The staff is very attentive and the service is quick. The place was packed — but the wait was very short. It could use a good deep clean but that might take away from the diner experience. Remember, this is your typical greasy diner. Don’t expect it to be spotless! In short, the Gateway Breakfast House is good, no-frills, cheap breakfast fare. Recommended!

I went here a few weeks back. I need to be better about typing these reviews closer to the time I actually go to these places. Anyway. This first part is for all of you hot chocolate lovers. I know this is a coffee town and I probably just lost half my readers. Oh well. If you order a hot chocolate here they actually give you 1 free refill. I have never seen that anywhere else. We came here for breakfast. Super friendly staff. Short wait. This is your tried and true greasy spoon. Nothing more, nothing less. I love this slice of Americana. It seems to be going the way of the dinosaur, but places like this still exist. We both had the 1,2,3,4 Country Breakfast($ 9.50). 1. Two eggs(any style) 2. Hash browns 3. Choice of meat: 3 bacon, 3 links, sausage patty,(this is where it gets interesting) pork chop, ham steak, chicken fried steak or German sausage. 4. Choice of the following: Pancake, french toast, waffle, english muffin or biscuit and gravy. This is a large amount of food for a small amount of money. Yum yum.

Wow, what a great way to be introduced to all that is Portland Oregon! Came off a plane ride and was hungry by early afternoon and just needed to get some food in my belly! Came across this place as people in my group wanted both breakfast and lunch. The portions were just humongous– in a good way though! I demolished all my food! The service here was wonderful as well, and the vanilla cappucino– free refills? yes please! never mind you that i’m lactose intolerant– only sometimes though! I wish we had a place like this in San Diego, closer and where the wait isn’t crazy but still a good whole hearty meal with great service and workers. bombdotcom!

Move along if you’re looking for quality espresso, duck confit or Splenda. You’re served by a classic chatty«Flo» type waitress, not Mr. Skinny Jeans who thinks the world owes him. Do you want your eggs scrambled or sunny side, sausage or bacon? Sesame seeds on the bun: check. Don’t even think about asking for name of the pig who sourced your breakfast meat. Shut the mouth about all the things you can’t eat, tip well, and don’t pull out the laptop afterwards because there’s a line waiting for your seat.

Visiting Portland and found this place as we left the airport. Definitely a good find. Didn’t have to wait long and the food was good. My eggs over easy were a bit under seasoned and the service could use a bit of work, but since it was busy… I still think it’s pretty good. Get the corned beef hash and biscuits/gravy. It’s worth coming back to!

This little eatery packs a big… Wait, let me start over. Except for the funky roof this is a pretty unassuming building. Normal aluminum framed windows, nondescript 5 lane heavily commercial strip. Even at approach you’d probably be thinking nothing special. And you’d only kind of be right. There’s nothing special, or fancy or even particularly interesting at GBH(I’m coming to the compliment, don’t worry). What this place has is the normal, boring, tried and true awesomeness that is American breakfast. Chicken fried steak? Check. Corned beef hash? Check. Canned corned beef, none of your deli meats. Omelettes galore? Check. Burger patty for breakfast? That’s how you know you’re in a no-b.s. American breakfast eating place. And the portions! It’s a big plate of food. They have a section of stuff that’s what you’d be offered at most restaurants. And it’s not chain restaurant we’re trying to murder you overkill. Just a lot of breakfast. That’s okay with me. The service is also very classic American breakfast and no B.S. They’re there to get you your food and they’re not going to try to charm you with how quirky and creative they are. How do you want your eggs cooked? There’s a line, okay? Never impolite, but business. Strictly business. It’s not very big, it’s crowded, you’re going to wait and there’s only a tiny room just off the entrance to do so in. And it will be worth it. Mostly. What keeps GBH from gaining that fourth star is the word«or». Pancakes or toast and hash browns. Listen, all of those things are pretty damned cheap. Decent pancake mixes work out to pennies per cover. So why so stingy with the sides, guys and gals? Chuck an extra two bits on the prices and throw me some dang flapjacks.

Had a great time here. Giant plates of traditional diner food in a fun setting. I got the special and it was mind-blowing and gigantic. Again, these are standards, and I think are done a bit better than most typical diners, but no, these are not your gourmet selections and are not priced as such. The staff were friendly and I even had an encounter with an elderly man who needed help and the servers were just about as friendly and kind to this fellow as you can expect. I saw that regulars seem to get along quite well and that the servers treat them well. This is the sort of place where being a regular matters — like most good diners it is about standards done right, good food, a warm cup of coffee, and good people.

Gateway breakfast house makes a mean breakfast. It’s pretty typical greasy spoon type breakfast stuff, but it’s done pretty well. I went at about 12:15 p.m., and it was packed. My party of 4 was put on the list, and we were seated at the counter after about a 20 minute wait. I had the 1, 2, 3, 4 Country Breakfast with 2 eggs, hash browns, country fried steak and a biscuit and gravy. The portion was plentiful and the gravy was everywhere. I’m of the opinion that the more food that is covered by country gravy the better, so I was very pleased with my lunch choice.

HUGE portions for a very low price! Food is delicious and staff are incredibly friendly! The big pancake we ordered with a topping of strawberries was bigger than the plate and covered with fresh, sweet strawberries and decorated with whipped cream. The omelettes were HUGE and must have more than a half dozen eggs in them with huge pieces of ham! The hot coffee here is very good, smooth and sweeter rather than the normal bitter/watery diner coffee you’ll get at a chain breakfast diner like I-Hop. President Obama ate at this restaurant and the walls and tables are decorated with news memorabilia from that visit.
