Embassy Suites Portland – Downtown

Location, location, location is what saves this hotel from a lower score. The tub didn’t quite drain properly and there was a little dust on the windowsill, but it’s walkable location and proximity to places in PDX makes up for the little things. They also had a free breakfast buffet with an omelet bar and happy hour snacks in the evenings. The interior of the lobby is also really nice in an old-​school way. In the future I’m not sure if I’ll stay here, but that’s because PDX is a big place with plenty of options both hotel and airbnb.

The best part is the location. Close to the waterfront, voodoo (though I don’t care about that touristy trap anymore), tons of food trucks, bars and restaurants. Free drinks with light snacks in the evenings and decent breakfast in the mornings. The pool and hot tub area is pleasant. Decent gym. The carpet is fugly. And the beds are only so-​so comfortable. I think it’s the linens, really. Maybe I’m just spoiled.

Surprisingly a really decent hotel. The first impression (the parking garage) is the only big negative holding it back from 5 stars. That REALLY needs an upgrade.
The outside is pretty unassuming but when you walk in it’s much better than you’d expect. Brand new carpet in the lobby. The rooms were also very nice. Spacious. Windows are crazy old but they work. Y’know, you can see through them and all.
Best part was the breakfast. Out of 3 days in Portland and all the meals, I’d say the breakfast’s at this hotel were the best meals. Marisa the hostess/​event manager was a huge plus as she always greeted us with a smile, gave us relevant information about what was going on that day and my son really enjoyed interacting with her.
We will most likely return one day. Maybe valet next time.

I normally don’t write reviews, but in this case I would really like to thank the hotel for their tremendous hospitality by sharing our experience.
I booked this hotel last minute on Orbitz, primarily because it’s downtown, had a free breakfast & mediocre prices.
We arrived to Portland a lot earlier than expected so we spent sometime downtown. I really wanted Voodoo Doughnuts so we parked the car across the street from them at the «Keep Portland Weird» lot. By the way I recommend this lot for where to park if you don’t want to pay the 37 $ per day valet fee. It’s 7.50 $ per day and three blocks to the hotel. You can leave your car there overnight, but will need to come back in the morning to pay again. Anyways, we parked our car and started walking after our doughnuts. We popped into a coffee shop and what do you know it led to the beautiful lobby of our hotel! Really very grand! I decided to see for kicks if they would let us check in at noon, and sure enough the exceptionally friendly staff made it happen! We had a gorgeous room (standard) and it was so nice size wise for my baby to crawl around. They told us there was drinks and light snacks at 5:30pm. Little did we know that EVERY night was free happy hour, yes FREE! All you can drink for 2 hours!!! Wine, beer and well drinks! There were also snacks such as popcorn, veggies, party mix and candy! This alone was worth staying here! My niece ended up getting sick in the middle of the night and had thrown up all over the pull out couch. My sister called the front desk for new sheets and told her, «Not very many things are open at this hour, but we brought her this», it was 3am and they came with 7-​up, crackers and a Chinese food takeout box (clean of course) full of goldfish! They even made the bed for her. When I heard this the next morning during the amazing complimentary breakfast; (Omelet bar and all sorts of yummy stuff!) I was so impressed with their continuous service! The last part of this review was that we loved the hotel so much that we decided to book another day. I had points on Orbitz so I booked through them, but realized we most likely had to change rooms. I called the hotel staff to be sure, and all the double queens were booked up. They were kind enough again to hold an empty room so there would be no lay over between checkout of one room and checkin of another! The next morning I got a call from the front desk saying that there had been a cancellation and we could stay in our room! Gosh, above and beyond! I will recommend this hotel to anyone going to Portland and we will be customers for life! THANK YOU EMBASSY SUITES and STAFF!!! Every single person we encountered was so memorable and so very friendly and accommodating!

We stayed here to be close to Kells Irish festival. Wonderful accommodations! Our room was super clean. It rang it at around$ 245. We thought it was reasonable considering the location and amenities. Complimentary two hour cocktails along with full breakfast for a family of four. We parked a few blocks down the st so avoided the inflated parking charge. Over all very pleased def recommend it’s worth the splurge!!!

— Great location and easily accessible by public transportation or walking
— Free breakfast buffet and happy hour appetizers
— Clean rooms
Cons:
— Tub didn’t drain well so that was a little annoying
— Bed was uncomfortable
Overall, I liked this hotel but wish the bed was a little more comfortable. I woke up with a stiff back so that wasn’t ideal but manageable. I’d probably stay here again if the rate was good.

Excellent Portland Accommodations! I am a Hilton Honors member already which basically means this is not my first Hilton experience; however, this stay was a memorable one!
First off, the location was perfect! Literally surrounded by some of Portland fun highlights such as Food Truck row, Stumptown Coffee and Voodoo Donuts!
The hotel and guest rooms were very well kept and the afternoon reception and morning breakfast was one of the best I have had!
I definitely plan on staying here whenever my journeys bring me to Portland!

First Impression. Beautiful Hotel in great location. That is what i expected when I checked in. Old historic building, with a perfectly preserved lobby. Rooms are modern and look brand new, with up to date amenities and fixtures. Old historic windows are preserved with a Plexiglas frame screwed in between room and window to prevent access. Sounds great, but things just went down from there.
Arrival. There is really no parking, other than Valet or park yourself across the street in a garage. The area is historic, but very sketchy and I did not want to be walking around an unknown area. So I let the hotel park my 2016 rental car. First thing I noticed is the cost of overnight parking, $ 37 /​night. I asked the front desk person if the cost applied to guest of the hotel, and if Diamond members get a discount. She said I should understand that it’s Downtown Portland. I told her I understand it’s Downtown Portland; but it’s not New York, Chicago or San Francisco. No budge on rate, but other circumstances caused the rate to disappear for the two nights I was there.
Lunch time. I was done with my meetings, so I went back to the hotel. It was raining, and I did not want to get soaked walking to find a local restaurant. I settled on the Portland Prime restaurant bar in the hotel lobby. I ordered a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and a small Caesar salad. I could not get over the smell of stale beer on the bar. It was like a spill never got wiped up and the beer dried. The salad looked limp and did not taste fresh, the soup was OK, but a bit gummy (like it had been scooped out of a larger container without scraping off the portion that had solidified on top), the sandwich had a bitter taste to it (I ended up scraping a cheese spread off that was in the sandwich).
Work time in room. Quiet and somewhat clean room. Unexplained stains on the desk. Maybe some Pledge would have helped to removed the stains. Stood up to look out the historic windows. In between the Plexiglas frame and window there were dead bugs scattered on the ledge.
Dinner time… did not feel so well, so decided not to go to dinner. Went downstairs to see what was being offered at the nightly reception. Carrots, celery, some warm dip, hummus and hard pita bread. Decided to pass on the snacks and just went back to my room.
Night time. Did not sleep at all. I was sick all night. Headache, bloating and constant visits to the bathroom. I only had lunch for the day at the hotel restaurant, so I assume it was the culprit.
Next Day. I had customer visits this day. The lack of sleep and ill effects from the bad lunch were hitting me hard. Needless to say, that meeting did not go well. I was not sharp, it was more of going through the motions day.
Text from Hotel. I was getting text from the hotel asking for a «10» review. I replied that I would most likely not stay at this hotel again, due to the cost of parking, and the food poisoning. Of course they apologized and said the restaurant would call me. The restaurant general manager, Brian, did call when I was meeting with my customer. I called him back about an hour later. Spoke with someone else, who seemed hurried and just wanted to convey the message to Brian. Three days later, and I have not heard back from Brian.
Back at hotel for night 2. Valet, young girl, took my rental car. Got back to my room 3pm and it was clean. I did not look in the bedroom, but it appeared clean from the entryway. I worked the rest of the night. Went downstairs for the reception and had a beer. Snacks were the same, and I was still not over the queasiness, so I passed. Finally done for the day about 11:30pm, I started to prep for bed. I pulled the first pillow off the center, and there’s a bed bug. It was late, I had all my stuff spread out and I did not feel well enough to complain and try to find another room. I pulled the dead bug off the pillow and did a complete sweep of the bed. I pulled up the mattress, took the covers off the pillows and we through the sheets. I did not see any additional bugs. Not sure where this came from. It was very isolated, like it was placed there on purpose. Nevertheless, I put everything back together and went to bed.
Check out day. I had an 8:30am meeting, So I was at the valet desk by 7:45am. Needless to say, I did not leave the valet until 8:40am. It took almost 20 mins to get my car. People were calling down asking for their cars to be ready, while making those standing in front of them wait. They bring my car around with a damaged bumper. It looks like who ever parked my car damaged it and did not report it. Spent 40 minutes filling out a claim and taking pictures. Also, had to do the same with Avis when I dropped off the car.
Conclusion. If you have to stay at this hotel, then do so. Just don’t eat here, park a car and check your room thoroughly before you unpack your stuff. I am never staying here again.

Amazing location with great proximity to everything you could need.
Combine that with all the perks Embassy Suites boasts (free Food & Booze) and amazing hotel grounds — this place really stands out!
Typically Embassy Suites have the same layout, with rooms overlooking a indoor courtyard. Not so for this downtown Portland embassy. Originally, this old historic building was built in 1912 & known as the Multnomah Hotel & has housed all sorts of famous guests. The beautiful hotel is nine stories high and spans a whole city block.
I really enjoyed the evening receptions. Free pints of quality IPA (tipping bartender of course), tasty snacks & basketball on TVs ~ this was always an awesome place to start the night. The small attached game room with video games, a pool table and an air hockey table were also a splendid part of the 5:30 — 7:30 reception.
Lastly, in the basement is large pool. The relaxing pool is grotto-​like, with a small waterfall & two hot tubs. I took a multiple dips & took advantage of the great little gym.
When I eventually return to this odd city. I will be staying here again without a doubt.

This is a beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown Portland that takes special care of their guests. I stayed here during a business trip to Portland and was very impressed the the hotel.
The lobby is absolutely stunning and a comfortable place to hang out if you want to escape your room for a bit. Upon check in my coworkers and I also received complementary drink upgrades which was unexpected but very nice. They offer free printing in the business center and you can get free wifi if you are a HHonors member (I signed up for the program just for that reason).
My suite was on the 8^th floor and very nice. The staff are extremely friendly and will always say hello. The complementary breakfast and happy hour are also really convenient features that make this hotel great. It’s very centrally located and I was able to walk to most of my destination – and the light rail station two blocks away makes the trip to and from the airport super easy.

I’m usually leery of giving a 5 star to a hotel. Let’s face it, no matter how expensive or luxurious, hotels are seldom perfect. Embassy Suites Portland — Downtown could be the exception to the rule because they are pretty damn close.
I am a Hilton Honors Gold Member, and if you are like me, you are accustom to your status affording you drastically different levels of treatment at different Hilton properties (usually unremarkable). I felt like the Embassy Suites really rolled out the red carpet. The greeting at the front desk was warm and inviting, and I walked into a room full of accompaniments and a personalized greeting card that was a very nice touch. The little things make a big difference after a long day of work and travel.
The room was large, clean, and comfortable. The shower was hot and had excellent water pressure, which is a big deal for me. Once again, it’s the little things.
I’m a typical guy. I don’t usually notice the comfort of the bed. Many of you would disagree with me, but a bed is a bed in most cases. However, the bed in this hotel was exceptionally comfortable, and I got a better night’s sleep than I usually get at home. My coworker (another typical guy), also commented on the comfort of his bed.
The front desk was very helpful. I usually take their dining advice with a grain of salt, but they pointed us in some great directions for food and entertainment (try Jake’s Famous Crawfish and Kell’s Irish Bar).
We can all agree that hotel breakfast usually sucks. Once again, Embassy Suites is an exception to the rule. They offer a complimentary, full cooked-​to-​order breakfast in their downstairs dining room that is noticeably very nice (once again, typically unobservant, indifferent guys talking here). We asked the front desk for breakfast advice, and they looked at us like we were crazy and said «Downstairs is the best.» Not sure if it’s the best Portland has to offer, but it was free and very good.
You’re probably reading this and thinking how expensive this place must be. You would be wrong. The reason we ended up there in the first place is because it was one of the more reasonable Hilton properties in the area. You would be doing well to stay at the Embassy Suites Portland — Downtown. Tell them I sent you. They won’t care in the slightest, but you will have an excellent stay nonetheless.

Pros:
1. Walking distance to lots of awesome stuff, particularly if you are a foodie/​city person. We were able to make the required trip to Voodoo donuts (yum!). After that our kids were done walking. We ended up with quick takeout from a Mexican stand (muy authentica!) but there were many more interesting options to choose from if we had been less rushed.
2. Beautiful and fancy décor. They had a complete gingerbread village for the holidays (kids loved it). The rooms were large and well appointed. Plenty of room.
3. Historical building (ties in with point #2). Big plus if you want to stay somewhere with historical interest. n
4. Free drinks, snacks, and full breakfast! Awesome! Free drinks only include the more basic cocktails, wine, and beer. Fancier cocktails are very cheap though. Also, the snacks are just snacks. Don’t try and make this your dinner unless you are not very hungry. Breakfast is great.
5. Nice pool, sauna, dry sauna, and fitness area. Fitness area had some top notch equipment.
Cons:
1. Valet parking and even self parking is expensive. But we’ve run into this with other hotels located in major cities. Pretty typical.
2. No free wifi. Really?!! What’s with these luxury not providing free wifi… keep up with modern times. Even basic motels provide free wifi these days.
3. Price in general. Free drinks, free snacks, free breakfast. Yeah. You still pay for it. At the price we paid, they should throw in free parking as well (particularly at the price parking is). At the very least free wifi… We were paying off season prices as well. Can’t imagine staying here at full price.
4. With the convenience of big city also comes the downfall of big city. Really grungy areas nearby (in case this would bother you).

Stayed here on a night before heading up to Seattle thinking that a downtown location was going to be nice. Was very disappointed. This place was a block away from Chinatown, which was a homeless encampment.
Arrived around 6pm Thursday evening and the valet seemed nice until the options he gave me was completely different to another White guest. Parked in the parking lot across the street and it smell of urine and was a tiny spot that someone had trouble getting in or out of the spot and ended up doing damage.
After checking in, reservations was for 4 but the room was only setup for 2, had to call room service and wait for someone to bring the missing items.
The drinks and snacks was the only good thing here. So enjoyed the evening with a couple complementary drinks and snacks. The bartender or hop wasn’t too happy when I starting eating the M&M’s on the counter, more for show than actual eating.
So went to the swimming pool area and the shape was more for look than use. The pool was odd shaped. The hot tub never got hot, just warm. The sauna tiles were cracking so was a foot danger. After soaking in the hot tub I realized there were dangers of small little rocks on the bottom of both of them.
I contacted management before posting this review. The first few emails they had trouble even location my reservation when it was a week later. They found it after I mentioned which room I stayed in specifically. But still didn’t bother commenting to the problems of the garage, hot tub or racist valet.

It’s a good location, in fact, 3 short blocks away from the Lite Rail «1^st & Oak» stop of the Red Line from the airport.
Also, the hotel itself is a block away from Stumptown Coffee Roasters and 2 blocks from Voodoo Donuts.
Rooms are typical Embassy Suite style. A small «living room with a couch, and a standard room connected with 2 double beds or 1 king size.
One of the nicest and most convenient things about Embassy Suites are the «included» full breakfast. We’re talking a hot made to order breakfast — like omelettes, hot eggs, proteins (sausage/​bacon) and pancakes.
Staff was very nice here. Always smiling and accommodating. I’d visit and stay again.

There is cheap parking nearby and convenient enough that you shouldn’t pay the high parking fees at the hotel. I wanted everyone to read that before parking!
As far as Embassy Suites go, this one lost some points for several reasons — the high cost of parking, the fact that even though our room was «cleaned» before our arrival, we found a bar of used soap still in the shower and the incredibly long lines at the breakfast buffet. While standing in line, you could hear numerous people complaining it was the worst setup they had ever experienced at an Embassy Suites.
That being said, we did love the location of the hotel and the room setup. With some changes, I would easily give this 5 stars and be happy to return.

Some important things:
–2 blocks from the Max Redline if you’re visiting from out of town
–centrally located
For what it’s worth, it’s worth it to stay here, especially if you’re on a budget or you’re traveling with your family.
They offer a discounted happy hour every night where drinks and bar food are cheap (cheap, cheap, cheap). And like most Embassy Suites, they offer a free breakfast buffet. Their breakfast buffet is top notch — omelet bar, hot breakfast items, pastries, coffee — the works. If you’re traveling with young children, this perfect because you can fill your kids up for breakfast before heading out for the day. I can’t emphasize how much I love their breakfast buffet.
This particular Embassy Suites is really nice. The rooms are spacious and modernized. Each comes equipped with a mini fridge and microwave, so again, if you’re traveling on a budget, this is great because you can reheat leftovers or whatever. My sister and I stayed in a corner double with 2 queen sized beds that was big enough to sleep 6 people.
One key feature that I need to mention about staying at an Embassy Suites is that if you’re staying in a double — the bathroom is usually located outside of the bedroom. What does this mean? It means that you have complete separation from the living room. This is especially useful if you are utilizing the sofa couch. Everyone has access to the bathroom without disrupting each other.
Two thumbs up to this Embassy Suites.

I usually like Embassy Suites because I like the breakfasts and the pool. This one, however, was not as impressive for multiple reasons. One, the pool is not at all meant for any kind of lap swim, which I wanted to do. It’s cute and all, and the kids that were in it seemed to enjoy it, but being kind of broken up into different sections, there was no way I could have swam a lap, even if it hadn’t been filled with kids.
The room itself was fine, normal for Embassy Suites, maybe even a bit nicer. Air conditioning was great, which was especially important as we were there during 100 degree days. If you can, though, ask for a room with a view. I know this is a downtown hotel so you can’t expect a great view, but our view was of other hotel rooms and it made the room dark so we couldn’t see the weather without standing right next to the window.
Breakfast was fine but eggs weren’t too warm on day one and neither was the hot cereal more than lukewarm on the second day.
Staff was always helpful, especially the valet and front door staff, but the neighborhood a few blocks away (waterfront park) has filled up with many homeless people, who seemed pretty aggressive. Now that’s not the fault of the hotel, but just a warning to people who like to walk around the area, especially at night. I grew up in Seattle and am not uncomfortable with homeless people as a rule, but I was a bit intimidated by the large groups of homeless at the waterfront. I spoke with a friend who lives in Portland and she said this is a trend overall in the area, so just beware and you will be fine.
Oh, and the «free» wifi that came with our upgraded room/​Hilton membership was spotty and slow. They want you to pay for the upgraded wifi, I’m sure.

I expected more from a Hilton hotel. The lobby was pretty and nice, but the rooms smelled like cigarettes.
The bathroom wasn’t cleaned too well each time which was really annoying so I kept cleaning it myself.
The breakfast was great, it has hot food like eggs and such.
The pool is nice and big, but beware, lots of kids frequent the pool during the day so if you think you’re going for a nice swim you may just get a bunch of kids in the pool playing marco polo.
Perfect area by the waterfront and walking areas. Valet parking is your best bet but I think that there is self parking too.

Love, love, loved this hotel. Came here for a conference and the hotel is nicely located in the downtown area (right across the street from Voodoo Doughnut!). Service is very friendly, lots of smiles.
Now to the suites, they are wonderful. Spacious, modern, and a big comfy bed. Felt very relaxed the entire time with our room. Guest services (i.e. asking for bath robes, towels, utensils) was fast and polite. Wonderful hotel, I highly recommend!

Location, location, location. For Embassy Suite at Portland downtown, its best quality is location. That is the main reason I booked it. It’s one block to Stumptown coffee, two blocks to Voodoo doughnuts, and 10 minutes walking distance to major malls.
Otherwise, why should I book an expensive but old hotel, and spend extra $ 27 per day parking?
The hotel room is nice. I booked a room with two queen size bed, and was surprised to find my room was actually a suite with living room. It also equipped with two TVs, on for living room and one for bedroom. However, the transparent curtain was missing for all three windows, so we either draw all the curtains and block the sunshine, or leave the curtain open and stare at the room cross to us.
The air condition was pretty old. Not only it was hard to set the temperature, but also pretty loud and strong air flow when turned on.
They charge a fee for internet at room, however if you go down the lobby and use it there, it’s free. Very nice decoration in the big lobby by the way. They had the big Christmas tree up with all the gifts. It was so beautiful that many guests were taking pictures there.
The complimentary breakfast was great with order to make omelet bar, plus all sorts of beverage, bakery, cereal, eggs and bacon. They also serve the breakfast in real china and silverware, not the paper plates in many hotels now a days.
The staff was very helpful. It was my first visit to Portland, so I asked the door man quite a few times for direction. The answer was always warm, nice and easy to understand.
Will I choose here again? Hard to say. Though they have professional staff and location is good, the room is really old and the AC is noisy, plus the bed feels weird. And that $ 27 per night is really a pain.
