Dosha Salon and Spa

This salon is total hit or miss. Sometimes you get great service, sometimes it’s a total waste of money. I accidentally booked an ‘express facial’ online, so was pretty disappointed when I drove to NW for a luxurious 60 minute service and ended up with a 30 minute ‘facial.’ Complete waste of money. Money would have been better spent on a nice mask and an at home treatment. The esthetician spent 10 minutes explaining to me everything she could have done if I had a 60 minute treatment scheduled, yet wouldn’t extend my service even though I offered to pay more. She proceeded to apply 2 masks, which I could have done at home. She was clearly inexperienced, and I walked away with my skin feeling as dry as it did when I walked in. Pretty big disappointment given the price point. Don’t buy a service under 60 minutes, it’s a waste of money. Even if it’s on accident. It’s always hit or miss with Dosha, although the amenities are a big perk to the salon.

I got three services — a facial, manicure, and pedicure. I enjoyed the facial a lot and the pedicure was adequate. Unfortunately the gel manicure was a disaster.
It chipped within a day and in less than four days 3 nails and completely peeled off. The last gel manicures I’ve had have lasted around a month. I went off on vacation expecting my nails to look good all week and ended up having to go buy nail polish remover after 4 days.
When I left the salon I noticed that there was polish all over my cuticles, that’s probably why it peeled so fast. There was really no difference in quality between the manicure and when I do my nails on my couch after a couple of glasses of wine!
The guy who did the manicure was really slow, so slow that here was no one in the salon with me for around an hour, they’d closed long before I was finished.
I paid with gift certificates and was up front with them when booking that I was using them. Maybe that’s why I got someone who didn’t know what he was doing.

I had an hour and a half massage appointment at Dosha on Hawthorne. I was really excited because I don’t treat myself much at all. I got there about 45 mins early so I could be ready for my massage and explore the facility since it was my first time. The front desk staff was attentive and professional. I checked in and they walked me upstairs where the spa waiting room was. It was really loud in there from the sounds of the salon below being carried upstairs with only a curtain as a door. It was clean but smelled like someone just crapped in the restroom that was right there in the waiting area. There were snacks and water but it was hard to want to snack when the room smelled poopy. Around the corner there were showers, a locker room, another bathroom, a soaking tub and a steam room. I dressed down into the provided robe and slippers, locked my belongings into a locker and waited for my therapist to come grab me. She came out and walked me back to a cold, dark, blue tiled room. It had a concrete floor with a drain. It felt like a morgue would feel like. There were shower nozzles everywhere — on the walls and the ceiling. It felt cold, damp, dark and creepy. There was a small massage table in the middle of the room underneath a row of shower nozzles hanging down from the ceiling. We sat down and discussed what I wanted to have worked on. I was thinking in my head, «please don’t massage me in here» but I asked out loud if this was my massage room. She said yes. It was called the Vici room. It’s where people receive shower/​water therapy type massages. That is not what my massage was. I was extremely disappointed that this room wasn’t even close to feeling Zen or spa-​like at all. I was super disappointed and expressed that to my therapist. I told her they should warn people that this would be their room before they book their appt. I told her had I known that would be my room, I would have booked a different appointment. She was very apologetic but we proceeded with my appointment. Also, she did mention that the table in there was smaller once I laid on it I agreed. My arms did not fit next to my body like on a regular massage bed. I had to lay them across my stomach while on my back and they hung down towards the floor when I way lying on my stomach (I typically fit on a regular massage bed with my arms to my sides with still some room to spare). Anyways, Aubrey (LMT) ended up being a kick-​ass massager! She was very friendly and had really good technique. She applied a very firm pressure and made my experience a lot better. She kept a towel over my eyes so I wouldn’t have to open my eyes and see the room since the room and the massage did not match. Afterwards, I enjoyed the soaking tub and steam room which was a perfect ending to my horrible room experience, especially since I was freezing cold from the temperature of the cold room and needed some peace and quiet. I forgot to mention the atmosphere was loud and you could here talking and laughing and chatter from the downstairs salon, the loud doors opening and closing, people talking outside my room, and all the traffic. I explained my disappointment to the front desk gal when I went to pay. She said she was sorry and she would make a note in my file that I don’t want that room in the future. What? That’s it? My first time there and I’m completely disappointed that I had that room and you’re just going to note my account that I don’t want that room? Anyways, I’m bummed. I feel like they should have done more to make my experience better; by way of a discount or compensation but nothing. I paid my full bill plus tip of $ 135 and went about my evening. Bummer. Two stars for the room with no warning and no compensation. Unfortunately, I will not go back. There are too many good spas in Portland to waste money and time at this one. Sad for Audrey –would love to see her again.

I am not one to write negative reviews, and perhaps you can be the judge if I should have written this. I received a haircut and color from Dosha on Hawthorne. They accidentally under charged me by $ 60. I didn’t realize this. I went back to work. On my break at work later that day, which is in the medical field and very intensive, they phoned me telling me that they mistakenly undercharged me and needed payment. I was late getting back to my patients, whom I had scheduled back to back until after Dosha closed. I told them I didn’t have my credit card on me and I was late getting back to my work but would get the payment to them the following day. The manager got on the phone and stated «We need you to pay by the end of the day.» Telling me in a very strict tone. I repeated to her that that would be difficult for me. And she stated, «If we don’t get a payment from you by the end of today, we will follow our procedures.» I asked, «Pray tell, what are those.» And she stated that they WOULD CALL THE POLICE! And file a report if I didn’t pay by the end of the day. Treating me like I was a criminal. I was beside myself. I reflected back to her — their mistake, I would pay when I can, they will call police if they don’t get payment by the end of the day. Yep. She then said she would make a consideration and if I called the next morning they would not file a report. I hung up. Called the Customer Relations Manager named Kate, left her a message after giving them my payment. She called me the next day, and had basically no caring tone to her voice, Repeating the same exact thing the manager at the store told me. I reflected back to her — You are telling me that your company made a mistake with a patron who has frequented your facility multiple times over the years, and because I was working and unable to make a payment that same day, that it is appropriate for you to file a report with the Police. AND SHE SAID YES! That is their policy and procedure. She then offered me a «VIP» card that entailed a 10% discount on their overpriced products (all Aveda products.) I told her I would be documenting and reporting my experiences, so that others can know how their business treats their customers. I am so sad and angry at the loss of Humanity in this situation and with this company. I’m angry at being treated like an untrustworthy person in this matter. I just had to document and report my experience to let others know how this establishment conducts their business. From management to upper-​management.

Just got my hair done for the first time in way too long, with my new favorite stylist Amy– she was AMAZING. I had one go-​to stylist for years before moving out here and was totally lost with where to start when searching for one. I looked at a ton of places and their reviews and settled on Dosha. I was extremely impressed with Amy and will definitely being going back to her. I showed her some pictures of what I was going for (we’re talking a completely new style and 5″ off the end, so there’s a lot on the line) and she gave me exactly what I was hoping for while being super attentive, personable, sweet, and gave me the most relaxing and well-​done haircut experience I’ve ever had. I got a deep conditioning treatment and got to choose the aromatherapy scents that accompanied my cut and style. She took the time to ask about my routines, hair care, etc to cater the cut and aftercare to my needs which I really appreciated.
If you haven’t been before, or are new to the area looking for a great place to relax and get a Pinterest-​worthy cut and style with royal treatment, you need to come see Amy at this location. And this is coming from someone who is realllly picky about who cuts/​styles her hair!

Just got a cut and color from Erica, not sure if I spelled that right. Anyway, LOVE LOVE LOVE my hair! Was a little nervous as she is fairly new, but I’m very happy! Just wanted to give her a shout out :)

I don’t like to give bad reviews… I really do hate spreading negativity… But I strongly dislike my hair cut… like may even hate it… and I even went to a «master stylist». I asked for a haircut that would allow me to air dry it and just play off of my natural curl. Didn’t happen. The front of my hair is butchered (see picture)… I can only disguise it by curling it /​waving it. The color I just asked for an all over color… it came out okay but my roots are noticeably lighter than the rest of my hair. To top it all off the color got into my eyes while it was being administered (OUCH) and everything was WAY overpriced. I am severely unhappy.

I really hate to give a bad review, it’s normally not my style. But I feel like I have an obligation to share, because I would want to know.
I went in last week for a mani and pedi that I had received a gift certificate for. The facilities here are nice. It seems clean and smells nice and the building is very modern. Also, the tech that gave my mani/​pedi was friendly.
My big problem is with the quality of the product being used. I could see when the polish was going on that it was thick and tacky. It clearly wasn’t coating evenly. This was true of the polish that went on both my fingers and toes (different colors). My nail also wasn’t evenly coated; there were several thin spots on the edges of the nails. A top coat was added but didn’t seem to coat the entire nail.
I was very careful to not touch anything the rest of the day. But I figured that by the time I went to bed it should have been dry. Wrong! I woke up with blemishes all over my nails. 4 days later and I can still leave a dent in the polish!
I called Dosha and left a message, but never heard back. I really wanted to give them the opportunity to fix this. But honestly, I don’t think they care. Too bad. I hear Top Ten Nails across the street is great!

I’ve been coming here and seeing Mykla for a little over a year and I’ve never been happier with a stylist or my hair. She truly listens and understands what you want and what your hair is capable of.
She is an artist! Also, one of the warmest and most genuine people!
I’ve also had the opportunity to have a massage and use of the spa area upstairs and it was such a treat. They keep it very clean and the amenities are awesome.
I highly recommend this location whether for your everyday cut and trim or for a special day of pampering.
The costs are worth it; it’s a good value and well worth it for Aveda products and well trained people.

I don’t know why Dosha gets such bad reviews. I’ve been going here (mostly downtown PDX) for years. My last appointment at Hawthorne was just as good, if not better then my experiences prior. Yes the dressing/​shower area is coed but there are literally 5 spaces you can dress, undress, shower where NO ONE will see you. No big deal! As a prior review mentioned… males are LMT’s as well, I have never been asked at any spa. EVER if I preferred a male or female, so if you have a specification, that’s your responsibility to speak up. I don’t find this unprofessional or abnormal. Anywho… the steam room and soaking spa are a nice added bonus here. Take the time to enjoy them! As always I walked out with multiple products that I love. I’ll be back to this location for sure.

Received a gift card and decided to use it for a massage. Got a Swedish massage from Audrey and it was AMAZING. She did a great job. It was so relaxing there, she used essential oils, hot towels, the works. Worth every penny to be pampered.

Book your mani/​pedis with Cody! He is THE BEST! His polish work is impeccable. He shapes all nails to match evenly and is a perfectionist when it comes to the final look. He’s given me the best pedicures of my life. He’s one of the originals who opened Dosha in our town over a decade ago. I’ve never recommended Dosha for pedicures until I started seeing Cody there. Other than that, your money is best spent here on facials! I highly recommend the recovery facial.

Just had my third hair cut and color at Dosha Hawthorne — each time with Hannah — who I give a huge thumbs up! She really listened to the ideas I had about my cut and color (together we extensively reviewed pictures I supplied). She really seemed intent on meeting my needs and is very friendly to boot!
Now, my one concern is the maintenance of the salon. The floor mats under the styling chairs are in very bad shape and need to be replaced! The doors in the facility that are highly utilized (staff areas and bathroom) are in desperate need of repair/​paint as well. These stylists work Very Hard and deserve a salon that is in impeccable condition. Dear Dosha owners, this is a lovely building, please maintain it in the manner which it deserves.

I’m not one to complain – in fact, this is the first negative review I’ve EVER WRITTEN. Things roll off my back pretty easily, but I couldn’t let things slide this time at Dosha On Hawthorne. I went in for a 4:30 appointment to get a pedicure and manicure (French tip) and 4:30 rolls by and the receptionist explains that the nail tech is running behind and that it would be another fifteen minutes. No big deal – it happens. But then another half hour rolls by, 45 minutes, and finally AN HOUR passes since my scheduled appointment! The manager on duty apologizes and says that at check out she would be sure to make up for it. The nail tech greets me and apologizes for being so late. Since I’m not in a huge time crunch, I don’t get too bent out of shape but am a bit frustrated. When she asks me to pick out a color, I tell her I’ll be doing a French tip and she says she doesn’t have her brush for that service. I told her that this was the only reason I came to get a pedicure and manicure was for this particular service. I then asked if there was another brush or tool that could be used. She looked around for another five minutes only to come up short. She decides to use a cuticle stick wrapped in cotton and assures me that it would work perfectly fine. She begins the pedicure, only to stop massaging one leg to go get scotch tape from the front desk thinking that might be helpful when painting the tip of the nail. Although I thought this was an odd method she reassures me it will work just fine. She forgets to massage the other leg and starts painting the nails. She spends a solid five minutes on one toe. Upon completing the first toe, she looks at me and we both know it looks horrible. I tell her that this isn’t going to work. I had her take the polish off the one nail and I proceed to the cashier to talk with the manager. The manager meets me there where she makes me pay $ 20 for the «service» I just received. I am firm and tell her that that is unreasonable because I didn’t get the full pedicure and I had to wait an hour. She said it was all she could do. This place is supposed to be an upscale spa, but I’ll never be back to this unorganized, unprofessional, and incompetent business.

I read all the reviews before coming so I didn’t have high hopes. My mother in law gave me a gift card here and since I don’t live in Oregon I had to use it all while I was here so I got two massages. When I came in the staff was very nice. I got changed and the robe they have you put on is super thin and SHORT! I sat down and also showed all my goods! On top of that the spa is co-​ed! Like where you change and can get into a hot tub and shower! I’m no prude but damn that is creepy and I do not need another guy creeping me out while I change! That really dropped my rating down.
My first massage was by Sara and it was amazing! I would give her 5 stars! She listened to me. Was quite. Super professional and I could really relax with her. I’m so glad I had her for my longer massage.
My second massage was with a guy! Let me tell you, they don’t tell you when you book that there are guys and girls and they don’t ask if you care. I think that’s super unprofessional! But I didn’t say anything and told myself of give it a try. I will say he was professional but that all I have to say that’s good. He didn’t ask how I like the pressure. I felt like he was kneeding dough! He talked a lot more then I think is normal! I could not get into the massage at all between him talking and the fact that it was so painful! He did the weirdest techniques too! Things I’ve never had a massage person do! I could feel his arm hair on my body like seriously!!! I should only be feeling my husbands arm hair! I really wish Dosha had given me the choice to have a male or female do my massage.
If I had never gotten the gift card I would have never come here base off all the reviews I’ve read and now I will NEVER be back and pay their very expensive prices.

Mykla Anderson is the best stylist at this location. I can’t say enough good things about this lady!!! She is friendly, warm, and will make you feel at home. She also gives a great scalp massage and really massages your head when she’s washing your hair! LOVE IT!!! I went it post wedding to have my hair chopped off. I had 12 inches taken off and I am sooooo very happy with my lob. Thank you Mykla for my beautiful cut.

Seth is the best massage therapist evah! Therapeutic when you need it most! He sees all my gal pals, I run into my neighbors who get massages too and they say they too see Seth and he’s amaze. I never saw a male massage therapist until him due to my own anxiety, and his professionalism puts one at ease. Add to it the steam room, soaking pool and Aveda blue and athletic oils and you will be born anew!

My fiancé gave my mother and I gift certificates for a Dosha manicure.
My nail tech was right on time, and sweet as pie, but my nails look awful. I noticed shortly after leaving that all my nails had bubbles under them. Some quite large, and others it just looked like hundreds of tiny bubbles under the polish. I am not sure if this is a sign of old polish, or too heavy of a application of polish.
For $ 35, I know I can get a very nice pedicure anywhere is town, so a manicure better be on point for that price! I am waiting to hear back from management.

Who would have thought that there’s a whole oasis upstairs. I thought this place was just a salon where people get their hair and nails done, but the upstairs has a lobby, steam room, soaking pool, and rooms where you can drift off into paradise while professional masseuses put their hands all over you. I feel completely relax when I walk back downstairs and back into the harsh cruel world. I would love to go in for my monthly pampering if I could afford it. Although the price is not too bad, a Swedish massage for one hour is $ 70.
My masseuse’s name is Eric, and I would totally recommend him!
I usually have an alien that resides on the left side of my back but it disappeared after my session! It’s a miracle! When it comes back, I will be running up the stairs and into my masseuse’s hands.
Bonus: there are showers equipped with toiletries for when you are done being a greasy body.

I’m lost in the depths of despair at having to post this review, as the tech who did my nails had a really sweet personality. Perhaps this isn’t the usual for Dosha, but this trip had me falling down a rabbit hole that ended with me feeling robbed and riddled!
Upon walking into this Dosha location, it appears modern, hip and somewhat trendy. The staff is friendly and welcoming and they offer you the standard tea or water. They have a good selection of product, and yes, the location is convenient and situated on our dear Hawthorne. Those are the positives.
Sadly, I paid $ 34 for a manicure that I sincerely could have done on my own at home. I felt rushed and even though my tech was personable, the service lasted only about 25 minutes (I spent 10 minutes waiting after my check in time). Once my nails were painted, I was not allowed to remain in the back where my manicure was done to allow sufficient nail drying time before checking out. Patrons should not be immediately ushered to pay — my polish did wind up getting smudged. Another disappointment was that I literally only received a one minute massage on each hand. 80% of why I get a mani is for the massage (I’ve always gotten 3 – 5 minutes on each hand at all other nail places I’ve been), and I did have expectations that Dosha would do better. My polish was not applied very smoothly either, but I only noticed this upon leaving the building.
I would have liked to mention this to the front desk when they asked «how was everything today,» but they created a situation where I would have had to talk about these things in front of the tech, which I was not comfortable with. This is my third time trying Dosha in 3 years (hair, facial, nails), and I think they could throw a bit more muscle and effort into their services.
